We all have our inspiration. This aint that bad really. Not sure why he gooffs up the little harmonics at the end of the riff but at least hes consistent if nothing else... This was my 1st ever album. I have a good recollection of learning the guitar, playing to the album and dreaming of being able to play infront of 1000s of cheering fans. I can't name a single john mayer tune but my point is the guy is famous for his own work. Even says it's not serious. Nobody commenting here can do it ;)
This version isn't really that bad. I mean, sure it's not amazing, and John isn't really in his zone, and the one time he sang, he fucked up (but this song was out of his range, that's why he wasn't singing), but it's still not bad.
Of the covers of his that I have seen, this to me the least successful; still, he can seemingly cover most anyone with some grace. When (if) he finds his own blues/rock voice - remembering that he already has a perfectly valid pop version, which a lot of people on this side find grounds for distrust - he could hit it right out of the park. my problem with john mayer is he wants the best of both worlds, he wants to be viewed as a bluesman and yet he cavorts with celebrities and flirts with the media. im sure he is shithot on guitar but to me he will never be taken seriously as a bluesman, as far as im concerned he is merely a celebrity at best. Guitar wouldn't be that popular if Segovia did not transform it into what it is and wouldn't sell. He is the single MOST IMPORTANT (In my opinion skilled) guitarist EVER! And that's no opinion. Guitar before him=accompaniment instrument. No band before 1909 would sound like they do or even have in depth guitar.

There is nothing wrong with what John did here...I've been to 6 VH concerts and each time Eddie switched it up and played each song a little differently. That is what makes a guitarist a good band. If they played the album version of the song every time they played a gig, the audience and the band would get bored. John did a hell of a good job with this...Nuff said!

This is a band having fun. This is what music is about. This wasn't a "hey, Im gonna go up here and try my hardest to sound just like Van Halen" type of thing. Just a band that wanted to have fun and play a song the crowd would get behind. You suck for hating on it. Im sure you folks on here (that are actually musicians) couldn't play the song exactly right either. Give it a rest and remember why you play music.
