  • is this the same as the Anaconda-vice ?

  • Hahaha i thought he fell asleep haha. I think you thought that too since you checked him out really quick haha

  • Will this pin in wrestling?

  • @NDNguitarguy well yeah. if they dont fall asleep before ref calls pin

  • I prefer the scarf hold way.

  • great explanation

  • can you go over this from the guard?

  • the arn triangle bj penn put on duane ludwig was beautiful. the way he did it was so smooth. you need to watch it to know what im talking about.

  • Hi Ari, I'm currently training to fight in MMA and I notice that I find myself getting the arm triangle position a lot, but I'm not always able to finish. Most of my training partners just find it very uncomfortable, but not something that they'd tap from. So, there's something that I'm doing wrong obviously. When you squeeze do you squeeze down or do you squeeze your biceps together?

  • @MrChanceCottle

hey i know i'm no ari but i had problems taping people with this too so my teacher told me to move to scarf position with the arm triangle so i can lean my head into my opponent more and get a tighter squeeze ..hope that helps you

  • @xCrazyxTCx Thanks man, i appreciate that. I'll try that tomorrow in jiu-jitsu class.

  • Awesome. You did an excellent job on describing the details in the triangle.

  • You don't have to grab your bicep

  • @ticosexy22 i use the gable grip when i use arm triangle

  • @jas108 even more than figure four?

  • arm triangle > you

  • wath its the name of the music at the begining?

  • such a beautiful move to behold and to apply well dun sir thanks

  • haha this kid in my bjj class almost passed out in one of these.........he claims he couldnt tap

  • New band: Neon Belly

  • How applicable would you people say that the arm triangle is on the streets? I mean when you're doing the choke you leave your temple, back of the head and neck open to strikes.

  • @Svittidiu my buddy pulled this off in a bar fight. He pulled it off, but when he got off of the guy, turns out the dudestabbed him with a broken bottle, had to get stitches.

  • @Svittidiu you have some good points but at the angle not a lot of force can be exerted and the guy will pass out before he hurts you too bad and with adrenaline you would be ok

  • when doing this make sure u isolate the other guys arm before putting your arm behind their neck other wise u may lose the mount. i see a lot of people losing the mount this way

  • what's the title of the song at the beginning please?

  • @jakepinoywolrd85 yougioh jkjkjk

  • Hey submissions 101 instructor. When you sink an arm triangle you can push someones head deeper into the choke instead of grabbing the back of your head. This cuts off blood circulation as well as air.

But your tutorial is legitimate in it's teaching. Can you please make a video on flying armbars? Most videos are way less technical and short but not to the point. I can do them but I think it would be cool if you could show others.

  • the first steps make sense but the last three steps are bullshit haha, he then made some of his own shit up!

  • the song is slayed by overseer

  • Great tutorial - what is the reason for planting your arm between your opponent's arm and head as opposed to outside his arm? Thanks!

  • I've actually been doing pretty good lately with just using a gable grip.

  • @shmoriy yea definitely.i use the gable grip all the time too

  • whats the name of the song that plays At the beginig of the vide, and by who?

  • @Jfaiola

The song is called "U Cant Touch This" by Vanilla Ice.

MC Hammer does a great version too.

LOL but seriously, I dont know man, why are you asking me?

  • this was pretty good, but I would still go to side control, don't like the idea of having my knee on the belly, I still like the Gracie way

  • this is my fav high percentage sub

  • @pipersmitty87 same bro

  • This is my favorite choke. I did it in a match but my opponent was in my guard and i actually choked him from the bottom. Just saw an opportunity and went for it.

  • I seem to often have a problem with my opponents arm being too high in the choke. They don't escape but it won't submit them unless I squeeze with everything I've got. I don't think I'm setting it up right. Any advice?

  • is it possible to apply this when your opponent has you in guard?

  • @davecymru89 Nope.

  • @davecymru89 no leverage.

  • I would love to have a friend with whom I could just roll and do grappling and stuff. Just for fun.

  • KATA GATAME

  • Lyoto machida !!

  • ari, can u do this from side guard simply by reaching over, or will that complicate things?? jw, cuz i wanna pull it off from both positions. nice work btw man.

  • you guys are very helpful with everything. great demonstrations

  • Brock Lesnar!!!!!!

  • Can someone tell me how to have a stable knee on belly? Thx

  • could you choke them out without moving to knee to body or side control?

  • thanks for putting this video up... i was trying to learn this at my dojo but we couldnt get it down very well and this helped alot

  • when you put the first arm down, dont you leave yourself open to an easy kimura especially since it can be done so much faster than this?

  • @boorens18

he wont kimura you if you've mounted him

  • Great choke, one of my favourites. Its a sucky position to be in on the bottom though :D

  • with knee on belly,

would you say the leverage is equal or greater than moving to side control?

  • i would stay with knee on belly, just on how much a pain in the ass it is

  • Side-control and moving away from the opponent's body applies more pressure.

  • @MayacianEpic

the knee on belly stops some important escapes before they even happen

in side control you are able to put more weight on his neck

i prefer the knee on belly also

  • @littlesuny1 like grabbing your own leg to relieve the pressure on the choke for example

  • @MayacianEpic Side control. On the belly he might turn you over if he knows what he's doing.

  • Could you post some good escapes from this hold??? I just push the head away, with my trapped arm, then muscle my way out after that. Not very technical, and its hard to get the reversal against stronger players.

  • hey i know how to do the armtriangle but sometimes when i do it people say it is cranking their neck is that normal or is there a way to stop that?

  • I like this submission a lot. I don't know if it's because I wrestled before but this position seems to be easier than many others to pull off. Thanks for all of the vidoes.

  • That's normal, because the arm is going on the back of their neck and pushing up like a guillotine, just on the opposite side.

    :D

  • Yeah I remember the first time I was put in this. My neck cracked like ten times pop pop pop. Scared the shit out of me and I tapped right away. Same thing happened the first time I applied the choke.

  • LOL same. People have a hard time tapping me with this choke, unless they walk up the side liek he did at the end. Holy shit that makes me tap fast.

  • Hey ive been watching ur videos for a long time and i love all of eddies videos and i was curious how long, on average is the wait to be able to be taught by eddie in on of his classes and on average how long dose it take to get a blackbelt under him and his system, because i really am serious about my BJJ and it is my dream and goal to get a blackbelt under him, because i honestly think he is the best and there are none better

  • Should really look at Ricky Lundell too he rocks!! Ari is damn good and Dan, I do have to say Eddie is amazing but there is a few others out there that rock too

  • He's alright but check out the Machado brothers John Machado is one of the best so is his teachnig getting a black belt under him is lajit and harder than most place

  • One thing I wonder about: Your knee on the stomach leaves him more defensive options, no? Versus layout out to the far side, where he can't tie you up at all. And can't you squeeze harder if you're off to the side? That's been my (albeit limited) experience to date, anyway.

  • i like to pass the guard and fall directly into this choke. This happens to my favorite technique. I pull it from everywhere.(Try to anyway.

  • thanks, I've learned a lot from you guys.

  • in a non-sanctioned fight (ie. street fighting), would this be effective? Just asking because it seems that when you explained the guard the back of your head piece, it seemed that they would be able to hit back.

  • A while back they addressed it in a general Q&A video, but Ari (the guy in the video) mentions that BJJ is not meant for street fighting when you might be fighting multiple attackers.

  • Eh it really depends on which techniques your talking about. Alot of the standing submissions, you know wrist and elbow locks and the like that break joints quickly when applied hard enough would be good for the street in a situation that you don't have that 7 seconds for the choke. This particular move however I'd say isn't really one I'd trust in a multiple attacker situation though.

  • Houston Alexander tried to escape from it and he kept hitting Schafer in the back of the head. It depends whether you're really tolerant to the hit or not. Well that's just the way i see it. Sorry if i couldn't help much.

  • no way could you hit someone from that angle hard enough to hurt em and if youre doing the hold right he'll be unconcious in 7 seconds or whatev so not really a matter...id guess, however, that in a street fight and youve got mount you're probably mad and would just pound the dude whilst keeping a solid base

  • I personally used it once on the street, I was concerned that the guy I was choking would poke me in my eyes as a way to free himself, in which case I would go for the mount and try something else. He did not poke my eyes cause he got into panic mode because he was getting choked. I guess very few people on the street would know how to react when you apply a choke hold, they normally just panic thus making it so much easier for you to apply the technique.

  • That"s a good answer and I can"t still believe some people talk about multiple attackers defense Great tips by the way. Is this the same Arm Traingle from "Masering the Twister"???.

  • Yeah it would be fine if you could apply it quick and choke the shit out of him before he is able to do anything like poke you in the eye or somthin. hahaha.

  • in the street you should really try and knock them down/out whilst standing using your punches, it isnt a good idea to start rolling around on concrete floor unless you really have to. But it would still be just as effective if you ended up putting it in to place.

  • True, but if he had an iron jaw and punched like Andrei Arlovski I'd atleast wanna clinch up with him to prevent him from striking

  • Whatever happened to kicks boys? You have legs, use them too.

  • I am a self defense instructor and for sure you would want to use all your weapons available to you , but these guys are submission specialists, so thats what they are showing.

  • yep...no sure why people mix the two up. There is a time and place for everything and we are NOT talking about street application or self defense.

  • @Submissions101 although having strong grapping knowledge couldnt hurt with self defense in my opinion!

  • @Submissions101 Pretty much every grappling demonstration video on YouTube has the same kind of comments you are referring to. Some user starts going on about how useful or un-useful something is in the streets and it spawns from there. I agree with you that there is a time and place for that, but you are just discussing the "submission". They forget about the art and immediately want to know how to turn someone into a vegetable. It's too bad that a lot of people have adopted this attitude.

  • @Submissions101 I agree with this perspective. Some elements translate well over into street situations (sweeps, escapes and defense techniques) while others are on a use by case basis (pulling guard is not recommended, but a strong guard defensse game might have use in self defense).

That said, would you believe arm triangle from mount, side mount, knee on belly be applicable once establishing position and wearing out an attacker?

  • @rlclark50 I don't think it's so much a question on whether it would work on the street, more of, does that street guy have a weapon in his pocket and does he have a friend nearby.

  • @WesDereq my friend got mugged and did this to the guy, guy went tooooo sleeeeep

  • @Germanpride113 that's awesome! I never said it doesn't work on the street I personally prefer not to use ground submissionsbecause of the danger of multiple attackers jumping me while attempting the submission. I also knew a guy who ended up choking the guy out on the street but... while he was choking him he didn't relaize the guy underneath had stabbed him 6 times on his side. Nearly died when he relaized he lost so much blood.

  • @WesDereq I've used submissions in a street fight. They work just fine, but you're right it does depend on the situation. I just live by the rule that an assailant can't hit me if I break a limb or put them to sleep

  • @DBZmegafan99 Hehe i like that rule...I would definitely do it if the situation is given to me. I just don't go in saying I will end this with a submission. I use whatever will end it quickly, be it submission, strike/s, talkng my way out, etc...;)

  • @WesDereq Well I mean if he just leaves his chin out there of course I'll look for the KO. But yea you're right it depends on what he gives me first.

  • Depends what you're best at i guess..if you're better at fighting on the ground, then you'd probably wanna bring the fight to the ground..specially if they arent trained at it. But if you're a boxer or something then by all means just use strikes ^^

  • I would only use anything like this if you're only fighting one dude. Multiple attackers, moves like this that come on slow and on the ground aren't a good idea. I'd go for joint locks and such that'll do the damage quickly and get outta there if you Have to hit the ground.

  • agreed

  • Really good tutorial. Keep it up guys!

  • Nicely done! Good detail.

  • i like to do this one from side control

  • MORE STANDING SUBMISSIONS

what about flying triangle or flying omoplata

  • id like to see you pull off a flying omo plata on the street AHAHAHAHAHA

  • well this video is getting a 5 star, awesome

  • great set-up, most of the time you can see the arm trigle coming, but not here.

  • Thanks for a great video, this helps alot of people to defend themselves and feel more secure. thank you.!!

  • sweet move

  • 10th planet should open a school here in the DC/northern Va area! I want to start cross training in BJJ later this year and I really like the 10th planet JJ system.

  • one of my favorite submissions, thanks guys!

  • I have to admit, instinct would tell me to jump over into side control to get better leverage, but the knee does allow you to stay mounted also with the choke locked on..

    Great example..thankyou..

  • Arm Triangle Choke is a little hard to do for me i know how to do it but i cant get the Choke mabey the Knee on belly will work out will be better for me

  • I love the Arm Triangle. So I'm definitely gonna work the Knee on belly version. Thanx Ari.

  • Another Great vid!.

  • nice demonstration guys, the arm triangle is one of my favorite chokes, and the knee on belly does seem to give more leverage, i'll have to try it out for myself, thanks guys

  • very nice... Thanks for the tips!

  • Wow, nice move man.

  • Nice lesson.

I like doing it from side control (like you mention), with my feet as two points of base, and driving all my weight right into his shoulder and arm that's choking him.

What do you do if he tries to bridge/upa in that time that you're scooping the arm? You finish it anyway?

  • which direction are driving into him?

  • i never kould get this move right,

i gota caught with this at a compition, it sukt.

  • Awesome tips - I love this submission and it's so nice to refine it. I'll try this next class - mwa ha ha!
