Cats have extra smell receptors in their top lips. If it was the first time the cat had smelled it, then she probably had a really good sniff (hence grimacing to expose the smell receptors). Sometimes catnip is too much for 'em, and they run off. Try fresh nip first, it tends work better and isn't so pongy.
