BTW Good job on making these videos :o) You explain things very well. Have you mapped the NeKo sliders, knobs and buttons to FL Studio? If so How did you go about getting that done? Tankz and cool videos and music :o) Shea
@Way2Spirited Hi Shea. Naw, I didn't mess with that. I've been using FL Studio with my mouse and keyboard so long now that I don't feel a need to map anything to knobs and sliders. That would mess up my workflow. LOL!
I used an Ensoniq ASR 10 for years before I moved up to the Open Labs Neko XXL, I have a lot of cool samples from over the years that I made on the ASR 10 and there are some great effects that came with the last ASR 10 O.S. , I am starting to think the best bet for me when I need stuff from ASR 10 is to just run my ASR into the NeKo and into whatever DAW (usually FL Studio! ;o) ) If it sounds better coming from the ASR, I'd just record it as a live instrument and lay the track.

Hey FunkyProds, nice tutorials vids on the neko. I've been trying to look for some vids that will help me use some of the software (like mimik) when I get the xxl later this month...
My question is:
Could you mimik the sound of the full 88 keys even if the neko has 61 keys? If so, could I play the rest of the 27 notes?
thanks, and keep up the vids! I will be watching every one of them.
Seems a bit more complicated than I thought and takes definitely longer, with all the technology they're using you would think that would be an easier and quicker process to mimik sounds.
Is the Neko all that good as they say it is?
Because I'm waiting to get an XXL and when I receive it I will definitely keep all my other keyboards for now.
I think I will prefer to use the midi to control them, but we'll see how it goes.
I made this video so that ppl would know what the process was like BEFORE the sale. Mimik is awesome, imo. It does exactly what you tell it to.
And I still believe the NeKo is as good as they say it is. I've had mine for a couple of months now and I'm still very happy with it. I understood exactly what I was getting before I purchased it and it has lived up to all my expectations.
I'm not saying you should sell your keyboards either. Only sell them if u find u r not using them anymore.
well its a cool feature, but if you have a keyboard with a thousand presets and each sound takes about half an hour to mimik... i guess i'd rather keep that keyboard.
Nope, my beats won't contain the same sounds. With my NeKo, I have thousands of sounds already. If I need other sounds, I can get them from my NeKo. I don't need a thousand sounds from a hardware keyboard anymore.
That's the beauty of using a NeKo. Now this is just my preference. If you want to keep everything separated in lots of synths and hardware modules, go right ahead. Don't let me stop ya. :)
u can mimik the whole keyboard easy u kno do not mimik the presets mimik the gm presets the original ones in the keyboard before its been tweaked to make more presets hope im makin sense eg fantom keyboard in string bank maybe have like 50 different strings made from 20 gm strings the orignal samples coz mimikin all presets is pointless jus mimik the original sound the u can tweak it and make more sounds out of it in ur new sampler
I love my NeKo. I did not go to engineering school and never took a piano lesson before. I just love to play all instruments and I have always had some type of home studio since the early 80s.
vince, it sounds really good...the mimik sounds a lil plasticy (for lack of better word). i can hear more warmth in the asr-10's piano...its sounds fine though and nothing that some dynamics processing can't fix.
Thanks. I hear what you're saying too, but you're right. It's nothing that a tiny amount of tweaking with eq or something can't fix. Also, did you notice the second time I played the mimiked piano, it sounded closer to the original than the first time?
That makes me think the way I played the mimiked piano the first time also affected the sound. But if you listen to the original first, then the mimiked piano right after, it sounds identical to me.
it does sound almost identical, good enough to get rid of the unit...which is all it needs to do. great software...i'll never buy a neko but it is a great piece of equipment.
I understand the why... But damn that takes a while. Seems worth it. With this option, you can in essence pay for the unit with all the money saved on buying new hardware.

@Way2Spirited Yes, as long as you own your ASR-10, just record it the parts straight into the NeKo and forget about Mimiking it. ;)

Thanks bro and yes, you can mimik the full 88 keys. Just change the range from C1-C6 to whatever range you want.

are you using reaper? If so could you show how to use FL and Reason in reaper.

hollywoodbeats 2 years ago
How many of the thousand presets do you actually use? You could just mimik your favorite ones and not touch the ones you never use.
Just a suggestion.
MakeItFunkyProds 2 years ago
but if you'd only mimik your favorite sounds, a lot of your beats will contain the same sounds.
i dont know about you, but i quite often use sounds that i initially didnt like at all and process them to my likings. ;)
