You mentioned features on our channel pages... I haven't really looked at mine since it went Beta. I didn't look at it before then either... I'm too busy concentrating on the videos...
I agree with most everything you said - but bottom line is - even though we are the life's blood of the social networking sites - until they make money off of us, they will not listen to us.
Their mind set is - they are doing us a favor - not the other way around. And is someone leaves bec they become too frustrated - the community feels it - but to them, it's not even a blip on their radar.
I have nothing against change. Change is inevitable & can do a lot of good. But, change for change sake is not & that's what we seem to get a lot of the time from these sites :)
Andy, I saw your video was 14 minutes long and thought - do I have time for that? Do I click and listen for a minute and just say hi and move on? I started to watch / listen and I have been riveted - just as I usually am with you. Watched to the end and spent much of the time nodding my head up and down with your comments. I am working right now - very busy - and it is so frustrating on the YT site when I have to do things twice or comments fail. Very annoying. What can we do? - roc
Thanks very much Roc. I appreciate you getting to the end ;)
As you say, "what can we do?" Not a lot really & that's the problem. There isn't really anywhere else to go is there?. Well, not at the moment anyway. Not that i want to go anywhere. I'm happy here with all my YT friends :)
It's such a shame Andy, these companies seem to have forgotten all about their customer base in the pursuit of profit. Those of us who vlog, comment and rate videos therefore raising the profile of YT are not only not consulted, but totally ignored.
Google are so interested in the bottom line of profit that they have taken their eye off the ball..the one that says "we need to make our customers happy".
I do think that part of the problem is that Google & YT have cornered the market when it comes to video sharing & even searching. Because they have a kind of monopoly they feel they don't have to bother anymore.
That has been the death knell of a few companies in the past. They would do well to remember that :)
The Beta change was bad enough but what really chaps my hide is their disappearing comments issue... I always responded to everyone's comments... But now if I do they disappear... So now in order to keep folks comments I must be rude and not respond... I will never be a tuber hero so community was all I had and NOW I can't even respond to my friends... I think google just wants nobodies like me to disappear like their comments....
I've noticed whilst answering the comments here, that that situation seems a little better. Famous last words maybe? But, i've refreshed this page a few times & all the comments are still here. WooHoo!
I don't mind change - certainly some of the changes have been for the better:, the ability for people to upload HD films and the size of the image has come a long way. It is getting more difficult to maintain the idea that You Tube is still a social networking site - now it has moved away from its core and It is a global repository and reference for information, music and moving images.
I went to a conference on social media recently & companies are targeting 'making advocates out of strangers' - so we'll see more infiltration of non- private users on these social networks. Twitter is a big target - and companies are hiring staff called 'social conversationalists' to build their brands. Eventually people will tire of companies butting in on their conversations and someone will create the next best thing and- like you said, it will start all over again!
I don't mind change either. Where would we be without it after all? it's just change for change sake that i dislike. Mind you, what pleases one, will annoy another i guess?
I agree about the HD options. That has certainly helped "proper" video makers like yourself. That is good progress.
I love the fact that YT is now a "global repository". But that does seem to be at the expense of the social networking side of the site.
Mind you it's only ever been us vloggers that thought of YT that way :)
The point you made 3 mins in I totally agree with, I like the the way you can catch up on a person's previous videos without leaving their page but it is a pain to keep having to click on the video's title to load that page to comment, which was effectively doing what we have always done! I think we should be able to click on a Leave A Comment tab and a pop-up window opens, much the same as they do on Blogger. They are all owned by the same people after all!:)
Good point about Blogger & Google. I hadn't thought of that.
That would be a good solution to that comment problem. It needs something to be done, otherwsie the comments may well dry up. Which would be a great pity :)
I'm actually touched that you didn't call me out by name here, Andy. Thank you for that - although to be honest I think I'd have been totally okay with it.
Yeah, I didn't really want to close the account but as you know from our emails, there was no longer any justification for it. There wasn't a single time when I would log in that something didn't collapse or malfunction. And in the end, it's just a web site and if all it offers is aggravation, then it offers nothing of value.
Andy I feel like YouTube is just not as user friendly for those of us that vlog and that enjoy the discussion in the comment section. With the new channel pages, I feel that people are less likely to comment on videos because it's not as easy and natural. It may work better for entertainment and from a revenue standpoint. But I think it's safe to say that most of us vloggers are not as happy with the changes and are not interacting with our subscribers as much as we once did because it. -Jim
Although I still use Twitter, it has never been as enjoyable to me in the months since they change the way @replies worked. Since then I've realized that users get used to the way a site works and when an upgrade is made, all that is disturbed is the site's disregard for the users.
YouTube has become a disappointment to me and several people I chat with, due to all the problems recently.
That has also made me less interested in getting involved on FB, I tried it out but I'm not interested in the applications and I find the site problems are too annoying to deal with after YT and Twitter.
It's a disappointment to realize that these sites, at the forefront of new technology, operate in the same manner as old media companies in some ways.
That's a very real fear I have with YT. I know I don't comment on videos now, this was an exception, hoping that it wouldn't get hosed up and it appears to be ok.
I was tenuous with FB anyway, because it's loaded with my family from the UK, US and NZ and they're all "friends" with me now on there. Exactly what I thought would happen did, I was cautious with who accepted friend requests from due to that, which was inhibiting. Then what I feared would happen did...
I accepted two friend requests from YT people who I knew were "uninhibited" but thought they would be considerate but they haven't been. Some people just gravitate towards drawing attention to themselves with overtly sexual comments, one I almost felt was doing it to be obnoxious. I certainly don't act that way and don't want family members to see that! I deleted them but still...it's a little to touchy for me mixing all those people from different parts of my life.
That's the main problem with FB & one i've mentioned before. It's a kind of crossover point between our online life & our real life. Sometimes the two don't get along too well :)
One of the main reasons I haven't made a video on YT in months is because of their constant flaws and changes that hinder communication and the user experience. When i hear people complain that vids won't upload or comments are disappearing, it makes me not want to waste my time! The latest channel page changes only push communication even further into the background. FAIL indeed!
I agree that a lot of the problems are down to poor site maintenance. But, imho, that just shows exaxctly what i was talking about. They are forgetting their customers & chasing the money. Rather than getting the basics right first :)
Great rant out of all that you mentioned i think blipfm is the only one not failing super bad at the moment. They did just do an upgrade but it cleaned things up and the site works better and unlike the beta pages they did much beta testing on there so it would work.I do hope they fix the comments on here soon it takes so much away from us all.
Well yeah they still do have the videos but they serve a purpose when you can't find a song by anyother means on there they keep getting new music partners though so sooner or later i think that won't be a problem.

Ive never once considered leaving youtube because of their "upgrades", I just bitch about it like everyone else;-)

Sorry Daryl. That wasn't planned, honestly. It just came out. Hence the laughing.
I'ts never occurred to me to think about leaving YT either. But, like you, i do like to bitch & moan occasionally.
Maybe YT screw up just to give us all something to vlog about? ;)

I like the sound of that social media conference. if only to find out what the "oppostion" are thinking about & planning to do.
it's only natural that see this as a big money making opportunity. They\d be foolish not to.
I guess that helps to explain those people who start to follow you on Twitter when you mention a brand name, or service? :)

Some of these sites seem to be their own worst enemies don't they? No wonder we all get so frustrated by them.
My fear with YT is also that people will start to comment less & therefore, reduce the level of interaction & friendship. I sure hope not, but...
I don't mind FB, but can't stand all those silly apps that everyone plays with all the time. Still, each to their own i guess? :)

You were one of the people i was thinking about when mentioning that aspect of YT etc.
Luckily i've stuck with the video making. if i hadn't, for some reason, i might find it hard to come back too.
Having said that, i still really enjoy the actual video making & for me that's what matters :)

I think there is a difference between twitter and facebook glitches to YT design changes, its not the same problem
When twitter raised 100 million dollars and still did not add enough servers to increase capacity I was miffed.
I am sorry our friend left facebook but that was cause of poor site maintenance by FB and not a social problem.
