Actually they are designed well for a fire because the driver is covered in a fire-resistant suit and at least one fire extinguisher on board attached to frame that blows onto driver with push of a button.
They indroduced the name because in the early days of drag racing they would bring a new concept dragster out, and people would say "thats a funny looking car" and the name stuck!
