@archon808 Sand works. It will scrub and condition their fur, and they like rolling in it.

Chinchilla dust may do a better job of cleaning, but with the downside that rock dust can be bad for their little lungs. If you provide dust, you should strictly limit the availability of baths, whereas clean sand is safe to leave in their cage.

That is actually Chinchilla dust in this video; that's what Sweet Pea liked. But overall I still recommend sand over dust.

@epicpup All that really matters, is that it's clean.

Beach sand is problematic, because of pollutants and garbage. Sandbox sand will be rougher, but it should be clean enough. Pet store sand will be best, both smoother grains and (hopefully) carefully cleaned.

But as long as the sand is clean, it's ok for your robo.

@epicpup Most people buy play sand, but i reccomend chinchilla dust because it's cheaper, easier to get hold of, and made specially for pets. I tried it after i got fed up of having to spend fortunes on sand. I noticed my pets fur getting better by less grease.

Rodents are naturally curious. Once they get past being scared of you, they'll start to investigate. If you make a habit of pointing them at things they like; treats, baths etc, they'll learn to come when you call.

Just don't ever put them in water, that's bad for them.

@katklub You can't. Sometimes they'll use a bath and sometimes they won't, and some hamsters aren't very inclined. But you can't make them.

It doesn't hurt a hamster any to not bathe. But if you're really wanting to see him roll around in the sand, just keep trying. And try some different sands.

Lily ignored sandbox sand, chinchilla dust, and ground walnut shells. But when I showed her reptile shedding sand she started bathing every time. But Sweet Pea loved the dust, so who knows.

@Unboxerr That's actually chinchilla bathing dust, which you shouldn't use. But the petstore had recommended it, and Sweet Pea had a taste for it, so I indulged her in limited quantity.

I use reptile sand now, which most of my robos seem to prefer. And no dust for them to breath in.

Sand bathing should be natural for most hamsters. but allow some time for them to get used to it. And be sure to get the right material for them to bath in. Getting the wrong kind can kill them.

Sweet Pea would come when I called. But they're not all like that.

@tehgurl They don't *need* to bathe. An indoor environment is clean enough that their grooming should do the job.

But sandbaths are natural for them, and some of them really enjoy it. She will be fluffier if she gets in a sandbath once or twice a week.

Don't be disappointed if she doesn't do it though. Not all of them seem to have the urge.

@Pockysodi I don't trim their nails. They may be friendly for treats, but they're not about to tolerate that.

They need something rough to wear down their nails. I don't know what the best answer for that is yet. I'd like to experiment with small flat pieces of stone or brick, but I haven't found what I want.

A sloping ~4" square piece of sandstone that fit under their waterbottle would be ideal I think.

@Pockysodi Some robo's nails need trimming. I have 10 Robos and trim most of mine although some keep their nails down themselves, the vet taught me how too. I would advise if you were worried to see a vet.

@izzygirl1998 Baths are optional. As long as you keep their cage and play areas reasonably clean, Robos will stay clean. They're very good at grooming.

But, a couple times a week for a Robo that likes their sandbath works. And they'll be fluffier.

Ohkay! I got the Chinchilla sand :D and we has the same bowl . . .except mines green. x3 ANYWAYS! I got the sand about. . .a day or two ago, I put the bowl in a shoebox, and put Bubbles in the box, She climbs onto the bowl and just. . investigates. . she smells the sand and then sits there. . and then jumps out x3 I help out by putting some on her back. . .Im putting her in the box atleast once or twice a day hopeing she gets the idea xDD

@thecoolgirl12345 That's how it often goes. Encouraging them doesn't help; they either feel the urge or they don't.

I think part of the reason that Pea like to bathe is that she's outside her cage so much that she gets a little grimy. Try your bath after Bubbles has been in her playpen for a bit.

At least she doesn't pee in it. I have a few Robo's that still think it's a litterbox.

@megaera17 Bathing isn't something you can make a Robo do, it's something they might do if and when they want.

Put the bowl in their cage, or in their playpen for a while and let them decide. I have Robos that love their baths, but I have others that are only interested occasionally. And a few that have never taken baths, but are fine without it.

@kashroyal I can't say exactly how I tamed Sweet Pea, because I don't rightly know. She is one-of-a-kind.

I have a Mountain Ash growing in my front yard, and all my hamsters get a stick from it to chew on. Although they do still seem to chew on the bars more than the sticks.

I've been looking into getting him sand for his dust baths. (I'm a first time owner, and got him two weeks ago)

And I was wondering if it's the hamsters instinct to roll in it, or if you have to show them what to do, and or do it for them?

I just make the sand available, and they decide what to do.

if u go to a pet store like Pet Smart u can go and ask a employee and ask them where u could find a bathing bowl for hamsters and around that area u could find sand. the only reason they bath in sand is because it goes deep into fur and they shake to mix it up all over its body. since hamsters are from desserts, the bath in the sand

Not every robo has the same bathing urge. I show Sweet Pea because she's so enthusiastic about it, but I have others that just pee in the sand, or ignore it completely.

Robos are good at self grooming, and if you keep their cage clean they're going to stay very clean. So the sand baths aren't a necessity, just a plus.

Try your sand bath again in a week or a month. Older robos seem more inclined.

For getting a robo to follow your finger; remember that rodents are curious. If you put your hand in their cage and be non-threatening and patient, they will usually eventually come around to inspect you. And if you reward that with treats they learn that it's good to be curious.

Sweet Pea comes to look when I point, because there's usually something good there.

Yes she is that tame; she does follow my finger.

Robo's are tough, they're very skittish and easily startled. It takes a lot of careful gentle attention to get them used to you.

Keep trying. Move very slowly when your hand is near them, and make sure there's no background noises to startle them, and you should eventually get them to take treats. And that's the first step.
