I looked at this bus in late 2009 and passed on it. Since then we bought a fully converted Eagle 05 that is turn-key ready. Thanks for the responses everybody.
You made the right choice passing on this one. It's an ex-Hound, the later batch of '04 production with the diesel A/C. Hound ran the fool out of these things and by the time they got replaced with MC-5s and 4107s, they were not suitable for charter service unless it was a real "fly-by-night" outfit. A better choice would be a an ex-Trailways from '54 through early '60. Avoid the '53 models; lots in common with the 4103 on those. Despite what uninformed clowns say, that 6-71 is GOOD.
Seems like longer than a year ago that I looked at this thing. Looking back, I can't believe I was considering it. You can get a lot of bus for a little money right now. I am glad this deal didn't work out.
Similar to my experience. A while ago I was going to trade my El Camino for a 1959 PD4104 RV. When the dude opened the rear cover, I saw that engine and said "Is that a 6-71?" He said Yup. I showed my friend and said "Look at the blower!" The owner said 'I don't think it has a blower' but I showed him, and he said "I'll be damned!" 2 stroke diesel. Makes way more sense than it sounds like. Anyway, long drive, car troubles and trade didn't work out. If I'd driven it, I think I'd be satisfied
The "clicky" noise is the air compressor, sounds like to me. The engine does sound pretty good, for an old 6-71. I put probalby over 500K miles on 4104s and 6s, I know 'em pretty well, even at this advanced age!
I honestly didn't notice that much of a "tick" at the time. There is very little to no smoke. I left with the impression that it was running great. I didn't have any concerns until I watched the video. Is it normal to have even a light click anyway? Could it be the video sound overemphasizes the clicking sound?
@TurbinePower69 What would be an "extended period"? Have driven these things from Albany NY to NYC and for the hours sitting at Circle Line while the group was at Radio City these things would be idling. Mostly for heat in the winter and in summer not only was the main engine running but the little four banger gasoline AC compressor motor was humming along.
Did like getting school bus drivers in the summer looking for some income. Fun was watching them trying to find reverse.
how come you made no more videos ? you have a great voice for narrating them :)

@DeserTBoB93535
I'm a "dingbat" for being new to buses and asking advice from people who know better what the noise was? Geez.

It sounds like the lifters which if it is, with that old of an engine, it's normal

I believe what your hearing is coming from the Air compressor. Mine does the same thing. Where is this bus and how much were they asking for it?
midcoastmania 2 years ago
@midcoastmania The bus is in Mississippi. They were asking about $4500.

There is a "tick" to the engine. It sounds like the engine is going to need some work. Any blue or white smoke when applying the throttle?

@thejumpsuitman That "ticking" sound is NOT normal on these or any 2 cycle
GMs / Detroits.......the " Tick " that I'm hearing is definitely coming from the air
compressor.......sounds like the "unloader" valve needs to be replaced.
One thing you do NOT want to get into the habit of doing with these
engines (any 2 cycle detroit).......is to let them sit at a "dead idle" for any
extended period of time.
