It all started with disputes about worker saftey standards (which escalated to out-right physical abuse of employees). The company has made (and delivered on) threats to keep the employees from organizing. When they voted to have the Union the organizers lost, but a federal court found that the company rigged the elections and the workers still haven't gotten a fair election and the company has so far failed to enact any court-directed remedies.

When workers got sick from contact with dangerous chemicals at work they weren't sent in for treatment they were sent home. The line-speed is dangerously fast and people have been injured by saws and other machinery dozens of times. Even when faced with legal trouble over their unfair elections Smithfield refuses to recognize card-check organizing. How many packing plants keep squads of armed private security personnel on the premises at all times?
