How times change in less than twenty years. In their analysis they referred to West Virginia as a democratic state and new jersey as a state that always goes republican.
this show was so great back when it featured thinking conservatives like fred barnes and tony blankley...pat's still pretty good but he's been saying the same thing for 30 years and i've never heard monica crowley say anything except recite GOP talking points...she has really been a drag to the show
These are all the people that are in the news show that's on in The Whitehouse in the beginning of Independence Day right before the aliens attack. The woman stands out.
Haha! Back when Chris Matthews was a right winger! I remember him being a Limbaugh fill in. He's just as bad at being a leftie. Something stupid always finds a way to come out of his mouth.
Pat Buchanan was challenging George Bush and was still an official candidate so that's why Fred "The Beetle"Barnes was sitting in Pat's chair. In Jack Germond's book, he said that John McLaughlin was such an egomaniac that it became a pain to do the show.
the conventional wisdom (in the past) is you don't pick someone from the same region for the ticket because you need geographical balance which explains why everybody whiffed on Gore back then.
Eleanor still sits on the same chair!

He should have gone with Tsongas.

Funny how Al Gore wasn't on the original list and he ended up being Clinton's choice.

I remember seeing this episode. I don't recall this discussion, but I do recall seeing the McLaughlin Group segment on the 27th Amendment.

This is a great show. Matthews was a asshole then, he's still one now. I like it when people don't change.

Note: Al Gore is NOT on the list. Isn't that the point of this clip?
Just goes to show how worthless these "talking heads" shows are.

Jaysus so this is what all the cable hacks were doing 16 years ago. The same fucking thing they still do today.

I remember when Matthews was at the Examiner.
When did he turn hard left?

Good to see Fredie "the Beatle" Barns but where "MORE TON"? This show isn't what it used to be and I miss the Crossfire of the 1980's.

Interesting to see Matthews on the program. Back then there were no other shows like this except Crossfire.
Also I had thoguht Buchanen was always on as one of the two permanent guests (along wth Clift).
Anyway, thanks for uploading this clip. Very good show back and now (minus Crowley who needs to go, Blankley was so much better).

And this program pre-dates Crossfire. I still remember when the regulars were JM, Clift, Buchanan, Fred The Beetle, Mort Kondracke and Jack Germond.

Jack Germond was the best

@MSTS1 Wasn't Crossfire on in the 80s? Pat Buchanan and Geraldine Ferraro, or something?
RavenMichaels 1 year ago
@RavenMichaels - It was. I think it began in '82 and continued for 23 years.

@MSTS1 - And it looks like McLaughlin Group and Crossfire actually both came on the air at about the same time..

No, there was also The Capital Gang, created by former MG pundit Bob Novak.

The McLaughling Group pre-dated The Capitol Gang by 2-3 years.

@Webins The reason Pat Buchanen was not on at this time was because he was running for President.

I voted for H Ross Periot because of the Clinton Bush secret partnership

Wow, other than Clift's hair, the McLaughlin Group hasn't changed one bit!

Its amazing how The McLaughlin Group in 1992 got the VP candidate wrong. Al Gore wasn't even on their list.
