really? i find it interesting and quite surprising. i would never have thought that. makarova's odete/odile is unsurpassed for me, but not giselle. i feel the same way about leigh's blanche though :)
anyway, i think osipova is a great great ballerina, unique, one of a kind, consumate, subtle AND original in her acting. and of course unveleievable physicality. to see her do really well in giselle see her performances with david hallberg of ABT. have a lovely day!
Don't you think that that's a very arrogant thing to say? 'Natalia' is only the western way of spelling the name that sounds, 'Natalia'. There are lots of different spellings of the name.
On videos, I have heard Natalia's teacher calling her Natasha. (It is a common Russian version of 'Natalia')
@LeDANSEx3 haha, I cannot believe you felt the need to point that out. Childish. Of course there are different spellings of the name. Actually, there is no Natalia Osipova either, if you think if it. Her name is really Наталия Осипова.
natalia is not condemned to be a kitri for ever shes young with time she would learn to hold her self more and do better performances besides don quixote watch her at le sylphide shes charming and amazing shes too not my favorite giselle but as i say shes young and every young dancer if is intelligent can be a better dancer every day and remember not every ballerina is perfect for every role but you need to try everything is a rule.
I love her in the second act, but her first act Giselle plays too much to the audience. She is an exceptional dancer, but I'm not crazy about her in this role.
Hmmm, O had wondered what Osipova would do with Giselle. I have to say she's very lovely in Act II, but all told, I get the feeling she's working overtime to hold herself in. Giselle is not the best role for this exuberant young dancer. I hate to see her condemned to a lifetime of nothing but Kitri, but she's just not a Giselle for my tastes.
I beg to differ. Natalia lacks delicacy and vulnerability that the role requires. It's hard to believe that this young woman of the world can fall head over hill in love with anybody, let alone die from it. I think that by casting this muscular, strong and very healthy-looking dancer in the role of Giselle, the Bolshoi has totally missed the point of what Romantic ballet is all about.
I'm not sure i understand what you are saying. Only sickly anorexia looking things are realistic to the role and perform good giselles? Or is it her character playing skills?
Totally agreed with your point of view in choosing ballerina for role of Giselle, Natalia is perfect but absolutely not for Giselle, not that kind of girl. It's not her fault, she just does not born with that kind of ..... feeling? I
its obvious from the comments that most of you are far to accustomed seeing those awful greyhound-looking Ballerinas of modern times. Osipova is anything but ill-fitted to this role. If only we had a time machine, so that we could go back into time to see a REAL ballerina...they are a dying breed, and Osipova is among the last of them.
I'm not sure if she is right for the role. I don't see the softness and vulnerability of Giselle here. Don't get me wrong, I do love her dancing and her stronger roles;like Kitri. I just don't see her as Giselle.
It is very much a difference in tastes. Refinement of the Imperial ballet of Russia had very much been the French influence. The heart of Russia always leaned towards expensive daring movements expressed in Gypsy songs and dance. Bolshoi ballet had drawn not only from the source of the Imperial ballet that served more aristocratic tastes, but also from popular art. Natalia Osipova, Moscow born and bread, very much symbolizes this trend.
Actually, I don't think it's fair to judge a dancer on such short evidence and as to the speed of her turns, Makarova did them that fast too and it didn't stop her from being a great Giselle.
Incidentally I think she does the hops on pointe with a lot of charmthe
Guys, you don't understand modern Russian culture. The West had it all for a long time: ballet, circus, variety show, sports in all shapes and forms. Russia didn't have the infinite variety. So they are combining ballet with circus with sports to make it one. If you don't like it - don't go to see Russian ballet.
I think the angle from which this video was shot is not at all helpful. Personally, I feel that Osipova has a huge artistic gift no matter what she is dancing, athletically or gracefully.
What I find particularly perplexing are some reviews on the Russian forum balletfriends. Do they have vested interest in promoting this clearly athletic dancer to classical and Romantic parts or this is what they really like up there. I mean Russian ballet has always been know for its grace, but this...
and is very sad, cause the real beautty is in the artistic part,(no that the virtuosity is not important)but, there is a thin line between be a dancer or a circus perfomer, however, this Natalya Osipova has the potencial to become one of the greatest dancers of our time, just being more artistic which she can be,I've seen her live and she is wonderful when she puts a little aside the athleticism. This is my humild opinion.
All the beautty and ethereal has been taken from most of the greats ballets like this one, dancers are more focused now in the athletic part of dancing(like spins, jumps)
My God, go ahead and tear each other apart only because you disagree.
Her too-fast spinning takes away all the beauty of the "flow with the music" in these particular turns, ... that's what happens when all you have to show off is your technique and nothing beyond that.
She really is not the ballerina to dance Giselle. Duh.
do you have any more of this? I love Osipova but she's a very atypical type to be cast as giselle. I would LOVE to see what she did with the ethereal (not a word I would normally apply to her) 2nd act....
good dancing, but not-so-good camera angle :-/

I agree. She is ill fitted for the role, both physically and spiritually. Better for her to stick to demi-character roles like Kitri.

Even she puts aside the athleticism, she will never be a good classical dancer. She has neither the soul nor the body for it.

Personally I'm not sure she can pull of Giselle, it seems the wrong sort of role for her, but I would never describe her as wooden.
