@wheelymeneely Back then the question was who didn't experiment with acid.? You didn't get busted for drugs in the 60-70s. This is indeed an acid song....
Well this was a psycedelic (sorry for the typo) song, well if your most of the songs of Kenny Rodgers he was mainly Country Western and love songs-which I liked of his.Eventhough I am not a Country fan what so ever.
Actually, the sound of this track was more attributable to producer Mike Post (yes, the same Mike Post who later wrote many a TV show theme). Mr. Post was a protege of Warner/Reprise A&R producer Jimmy Bowen (under whose Amos Productions the record was produced) at the time.
Take it from one who remembers. This was no quick cash in. This was THE KENNY ROGERS OF THE DAY. He even did a weekly TV show on Canadian TV. The show, hokey as it sounds was called "Rollin' On The River" with Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. It was a few years after this that he started down the country road.

The First Edition was formed in 1967.
Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) was a hit from their debut album in 1968.
Between 1967 and 1975, hits included:
Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town; Reuben James; But You Know I Love You; Something's Burning; Tell It All Brother; Heed the Call
First Edition was the first pop rock group to have a prime time variety show in the USA and Canada - Rollin ran from 1971 to 1973
Kenny's solo "Love Lifted Me" was released 1976
