Regarding weight distrobution...it depends on the 911. Typically the all aluminum V8's are about the same weight as a 3.0L and very close to a 2.7L. We are might lighter than a single turbo 930 engine by as much as 180 lbs...and the twin turbo package is over 200lbs. than the LS V8. So, if you have an early 911 or 912, and you wish to have big turbo performance without the weight, this is the only way to go.
There are so many out there. If you look at the Renegade Hybrids YouTube channel, we have lots of conversion videos. I also like the track clip from Tony G who is one of our customers and a good driver. Do a search for "Tony G California Speedway Speed Ventures" and you will see him pass several in the field. I would also suggest serching YouTube and you will find a ton more. Thanks for asking. I will have a few more up soon. We are building another 944 in the Spring!
Hi Renegade, is there any chance of getting some videos of 944's with the LSx conversion? It's one of my dream cars and I'd love to see some videos from your company.

thats freakin sweet!! and is that candy tangerine? i want to get a 944 and put a ls1 in it and paint it candy tangerine and my dad wants to get a 911 and fix up.
@grabir01 Thanks... Can't wait to show you the new 911's we are building. We have a nearly-completed 993TT AWD 911 with a 565HP LS3 tucked nicely in the rear. We have a mid 80's 911 660HP LS7 powered conversion that even has true 180 headers that runs and will drive later this week. AND, we have a 1999 996 C4 E-Rod 50 state smog legal 430HP LS3 V8 911 that we just started last week! In November, our LS7 Boxter project will take shape as we introduce another new batch of conversion kits!
I love it (except for the terrible 12 year old's music selection ;-) but why is a V8 911 so wrong? What I think is wrong is the godawful sound of a Porsche flat-six. Besides, anyone who has ever heard about Porsche V8 conversions knows that Renegade is the cream of the crop and has been for years.
@TheSNEAKERHEAD2010 I belive those rims were a custom "Boyd" design if I remember correctly. They are very pretty, but they were not balanced well at all...unfortunately. The customer paid quite a big hefty bunch of cash for them, and they look good, so he just 'deals' with the slight vibration.
@TheSNEAKERHEAD2010 Oh...and the paint color is "House of Colors, Tangerine" with a Yellow base coat. The video does not do the paint justice. It's an amazing color in person.
@RenegadeHybrids I have a couple of questions for you. With this swap how does the engines higher center of gravity affect body roll? Also what kind of engine mounts do you guys use and how is the NVH quality?
@e2emceesquared Thanks for asking. We did a rather primative tip test with a 3L NA six and the LS V8 fully dressed engines with AC, injection, intake, alternator-fan-shroud (six), ECU and harness (sitting on top of both), water pump, Renegade cradle (V8), etc., and we used the center line of the crank as the balance point since the engines sit in the engine bay at the same crank height. You won't believe me, but the flat six was more top heavy. Try it...
@e2emceesquared The noise (NVH) in the car is considerably less IF you build a rather conservative exhaust system. Some will argue that the noise from a V-8 is way more than a 6. I say, the exhaust noise is 'more' depending on the exhaust, but the mechanical noise from the valve clatter can't be tuned like an exhaust system can. We have a 914 in-house conversion with 335HP that sounds like a stock 996 with CATS and all...even inside the car 5 inches away from the engine.
@RenegadeHybrids Thanks for the prompt response. I would like to do some research on your results. Also have you guys ever thought of using other v8's, maybe like Bmw's N63 twin turbo 4.4L?
@e2emceesquared Most of the other V8's that are available are larger in size (much lager in many cases) and heavier...not to mention more expensive. Honestly, the GM platform is really hard to beat dollar for dollar.
Hi to everyone... i'm interested on LS-3 Engine on my Porsche 86' 944 N/A... what's the Weight Ratio Front & Rear after the Transplant? What are the items included on the kit? what are the upgrades on stock LS-3 to have a 550HP+ that will "PASS" - "CA SMOG TEST"? and are you going to modify the stock brakes to Porsche "Big Brakes" all around? How much it will COST? to "BUILD" stock LS3 = 350+HP? and a modified 550+ HP? Thanks... ^_^
@Ganador15 Thanks for asking. To many questions for a small 500 character box, but I can hit a few points. The LS-3 ERod 50 state smog legal 430HP 6.2L all aluminum V8 is the biggest smog legal engine available. It weighs less than a turbo 944 engine and slightly more than the NA 944 engine. 50/50 weigtt bias. See our web site for all parts in kit. Big 993TT brakes are a HUGE plus! With new engine, brakes, kit, AC, exhaust, everything, about $17K. I fit it all in!
Thanks for the reply... so you mean that only till 430HP LS-3 ERod are 50 State Smog Legal? So modification till 500HP+ will not be possible to pass the CA Smog? sad to hear that... and the LS-3 is weighs more than my stock 944 NA engine... hmmm... probly with 20-25k maybe all i need and is it possible to upgrade the Cam+Port Heads+Springs+Etc can do 500HP+ on pump gas...? thanks for all the info... hope to work with you guys soon... ^_^
@Ganador15 The 430HP is without any upgrades straight out of the box. I would suggest a cam upgrade to get you to the 500HP mark. It becomes harder to keep within the smog requirements, but it's already been done a few times. Weight...the LS-3 is within 15 lbs of your NA 944. Not an issue if you ask me. Your 500HP pump gas NA 944 is just not possible with Calif emissions. Plus, the reliability would be quite questionable. You would still have timing belts to change etc. My .02 cents
I have other YouTube videos that have less monkeys and more car sounds. Please check out the two latest videos that we just uploaded a few weeks ago. The "Dyno" one really gives you a great idea of the wonderful sound of these beasts! Thanks for playing...
The white 930 that is featured in some of our other YouTube videos has scared many as recently as this morning. I work as an Race Instructor at Spring Mountain Motorsports and I took a customer out for a few laps early today. After driving him all the way out to the track at a mellow pace, he was sooo impressed at the transformation from sweet street ride to track monster, then back again. That's the beauty of these cars. They are date cars AND track cars. That's hard to find!
As a 911 owner and a strong believer in power to weight ratio. That is an awsome machine!!! Every time I pull out my 2.7 I imagine how well a 350 would fit in that little engine compartment. I was able to get a little over 200 hp out of my 2.7 and the car responds to it well. Ohhhhh but if I could double that!!! Keep up the good work!
Everything makes since to me. I'm seriously considering this to my current 928 which I'm trying to restore. Or I might find a 928 or 944 shell and bring it to you guys. All I need to know is a rough estimate of the engine, mounts, everything else that's needed to drive the car back to L.A. (and labor)! All I want is the cheapest set-up with an LS or even an LT. thanks
Everybodies an expert and critique. Face it, this is badass. Hot rodding at its best. Put a small block chev in anything small/light and it'll be fun. Did Renegade use the worlds largest shoehorn? Put an LS motor in a Ferrari, make the purist furrious!
Hmmmm...it sure seems to me that if you can increase the power with an easy-to-work-on good ole' American 8 cyl. powerplant, INCREASE the handling of an already finely tuned machine, and save money doing it, it's one of them "why-NOT" questions. Renegade has found a way to take a fun car and make it a "betcha-can't-get-that-grin-to-go-away" all out smile machine. Maybe i'm just dumb, but that's my take. I can't wait to see what else they got. And to the guys at Renegade, GREAT WORK!
it does weigh less youre right , but your still a tosser because the front ends on 911 s will skip and lose all front traction and on turns under acceleration . i suppose if you ever had one you would know this!
?? 911's are typically later braking and harder turning cars than most, yet you say they "will skip and lose all front traction." Since a 911 has more weight in the rear, it actually maintains more even weight distribution over all 4 contact patches under hard braking, unlike a 50/50 car. This allows a skilled 911 driver to out brake most other cars. "...And on turns under acceleration", the front of a 911 has less mass which allows it to rotate quicker rather than push. Chief Driving Inst, PCA
Thank you for your great insight on the turbo motor! Fun fact...if you don't mind. Did you know the 930 single Turbo motor is 180 lbs. HEAVIER than an LS V-8? AND...The Twin Turbo 993 engine is 200 lbs. HEAVIER than an LS series motor. Let's put it this way, you would have to build a 500HP 2.7 NA motor to keep up with the performance AND the weight advantage of a 500HP LS-3! I don't know of anyone that can build a reliable 500HP 2.7 for ANY amount of money so the LS-3 looks pretty "cool!"
Honestly, not to sure. I don't do launches and quarter miles passes with Porsches, but many of my customers are running at, or under, the mid 12's. We typically do track events on road courses where the untouchable 30 to 130 acceleration, impressive handling, and superior braking, really shines.
Your weight statements on the engine may be true, but you leave out the fact that the flat 6 has a lower center of gravity than the taller Chevy engine. Also, please tell everybody how much other stuff you put into the car and that additional weight...i.e. radiators, coolant, lines, etc. The weight of the engine alone is meaningless because you can't run it without the radiators. TT 993 engine can make well over 500 HP with bolt ons. 928S4 V8 can make 635 with bolt ons. Both still Porsche.
On March 10th 2009 we scaled a 1984 stock Porsche powered turbo slant nose at Interstate Scales: Front = 1080, Rear = 1960, Total = 3040.
On August 21st 2009 we scaled the same car with a 520HP LS-3 Chevy V-8 with full in dash AC and heat, at Interstate Scales: Front = 980, Rear = 1860, Total = 2840.
If you consider the high rotating mass of the fan/alternator assembly, and the weight of the Porsche AC compressor also high in the engine bay of a stock 911, the Chevy has that covered as well!
That honestly made me laugh! We can make them sound much more European, or like a Hot Rod. Typically our customers like the big V8 horsepower sound. I, however, would rather sneek up on the deer. Thanks for your comment!
@bladey1010 Since you made this hysterical comment, I have used it time and time again to make a point. I (again) agree that some V8 exhaust systems in these Porsche's sound very "redneck." I can't wait for you to hear our 660HP LS-7, Renegade built, 911 with 180 deg. headers and a custom exhaust. It will change your mind!!! It's the most sexy Porsche I have ever heard with open headers. When we complete the car, tune it, and drive it, I will record a pass through a long tunnel. Can't wait!
You guys should make a SR20DET conversion or maybe a RB26DET motor conversion for the 914 These motors put down some hp once built. They put these motors in datsun 510s
I'll tell you why not...the motors are not as precise and they don't match the charachter of the car. The flat 6 is an amazing piece. High revving low center of gravity and it makes nice power. I can understand these conversions when you have a spent magnesium 2.7 in a beat up 1977 chassis, but to claim installing a Chevy V8 is favourable to the 993TT engine is, well, rather silly in my opinion. You make a swap like that and the value of the car is in the toilet.
OK...I guess I can't dispute "character". Quite simply, if I could have more linear torque and balance under my right foot, no turbo lag, cheaper HP, less weight (especially past the rear wheels), and better weight bias, I would choose this option. The 1997 AWD 993 Twin Turbo we are building with an LS3 is the ideal car for lots of balancable torque and better weight distribution...in our opinion. It's not for everyone, but we certainly have a great option for some, don't you think? Thanks!
So uhhh, when you do a 993 swap, you mean to tell me that the value of the car goes up? I don't know too many purists that will tolerate anything besides add ons to the existing power plant.
Personally, it's a load of fun being the life of the party at the hot rods shows, car cruises AND the Porsche rallys. The best part is getting challenged by someone with a $90k car and then smoking them with an engine that's not as precise as a flat 6. :)
My recipe for speed and agility pertains to the 928, not the 911. My recipe allows the stock 928S4 engine to make in excess of 600 HP. Complete bolt-on, factory computers and the engine never leaves the chassis to pull this off. I for one find the negativity you present on your website about the 928 very misleading.
Well thank you for your opinion. I think a 600HP 100,000 mile 928 motor that "costs less" to build, operate, maintain, and repair is questionable. With the weight savings of the LS-V8, you only need just over 500 Chevy HP to match the power to weight ratio of the bolt-on 600HP Porsche alternative.. Plus the car handles better so corner speed is increased. The fit and finish is cleaner and easier to work on. I'm not saying this is for everyone, but it does make sense to broken 928 owners!
To make the same power to weight ratio with 525 HP you would need the completed car to weigh 2975 lbs and it's clear to see that just by changing the engine to a small block Chevy that it simply is not possible to remove 625 lbs from the car (unless the Chevy weighs -75 lbs) Figuring in other mods when you are done is not apples to apples. Then you should also consider that a 525 HP NA engine simply can't match the midrange torque of a turbocharged 635 HP engine.
that color rocks ,plus the car.wow!

And all that coolant. That stuff is REALLY heavy....almost 8 lbs per gal.
Dude, if you ever get a chance, drive one of these. My brother is a drag racer, he about pooped his pants when I took him for a ride in my 918.

Beautiful cars....outstanding performance. Sad that they sound like a truck loaded with rednecks going on a deer hunt. ; )
bladey1010 2 years ago

A flat 6 fron a 911 can make plenty of power if built properly...and the car is still all Porsche.

What is a Porsche? A quick look...
Brakes: Brembo & ATE, Seats: Recarro & Momo, Instruments: VDO, Electrics: Bosche, Carbs: Weber & Solex, Turbos: KKK, Shocks & Struts: Bilstein Koni & Boge, Synchronizers: Borg-Warner, Transaxles: Audi & Mercedes Benz, Wheels: Fuches, Lighting: Hella, Bodies: Barth & Karmann, and engines: VW & Audi... Why not Chevy?
What makes you think your "recipe" for speed and agility is "correct"? Why can't my "recipe" be just as "correct"? Thanks for pondering!
RenegadeHybrids 2 years ago

Thanks!

You make some good points here.

Mine is "correct" because:
It costs less
It maintains the Porsche powerplant
It maintains Porsche level of fit and finish
It's easier to install (no engine to pull)
HerrKuhn928 2 years ago
Well thank you for your opinion. I think a 600HP 100,000 mile 928 motor that "costs less" to build, operate, maintain, and repair is questionable. With the weight savings of the LS-V8, you only need just over 500 Chevy HP to match the power to weight ratio of the bolt-on 600HP Porsche alternative.. Plus the car handles better so corner speed is increased. The fit and finish is cleaner and easier to work on. I'm not saying this is for everyone, but it does make sense to broken 928 owners!
RenegadeHybrids 2 years ago
3600lbs/635 HP=5.7 lbs/HP.

Will you guys be producing a Boxster LS1 conversion kit?
seanchanq 2 years ago
We have a wrecked Boxter in the shop right now. It will happen! When? It has to be perfect...so at this point...not sure. Thanks for your interest!
RenegadeHybrids 2 years ago
AWESOME, I'll be waiting :)
seanchanq 2 years ago
That's a horrible idea....
You guys should do a V-8 conversion on a Cayenne Turbo S!
valmand2 2 years ago
That is also an idea that we are considering.
