Johnny Yan started off as a pro basketball player, but he was a member of a band called 183 club with Ming Dao, Sam Wang, Ehlo Huang and Jacky Zhu (another former member). He decided to go into acting due his basketball career not going well at the time, meanwhile recovering from an injury in 2001. He went back to being a pro basketball player in 2007 though.
