Good Vid, but i think that pressure testing everytime is good practice, with or without water. your wasting your time if you refill a gearcase that has had water in it, also, change the washers each time, they are like a dollar, and also, i would put the engine level. and one last thing, before touching the bottom screw, take the top one out, and see what the level is first. if you filled it full, and your down, theres a reason and figure it out before you refill that gearcase. thanks tho TMD
thats only on old evinrudes.... was the pivot screw for the shift yoke, and i believe it was a star head screw, all the drain plugs are 3'8 flat head screws
what are the 3 screws for on my OMC Cobra Stern Drive motor?
I have 1 on the top and one on the bottom.
I also have a screw plug on the OTHER side of the stern drive. Can ya tell me what that is? And how to change the lube on this and what is the OTHER plug by itself on the other side is? Thanks,,
yeah, i hate it when seals go bad, i have a 15 hp force and the gear cover went bad it cracked and i didnt realize it, but i had water in it for about a year.
not true. milkyness usually indicates water in your gear oil. usually water leaks through a seal or a drain plug, or even the waterpump base. fishing line wrapped around the propshaft behind the thrust bearing is a common thing to see. it chews up the propshaft seal on the bearing carrier.
We use high performance oil in all ours that we do, that way we only have to buy one type. Keeps it simple.

I have a 5 HP Mariner 1986 4 stroke; need advice on how to oil change; and have some doubts on if the impeller is working properly.
Thanks a lot.

The "Flush" screw is to allow for an external water supply to flush water through the engine without the engine running.

Good video,...but I have the older straight 6 Merc 150. What is the 'FLUSH' screw up near the top vent screw? thanks.

how do you change the engine oil for a 4-stroke?
cooleb 2 years ago
Leave the OTHER one alone.
You need to remove the top one and bottom one only.
Fill from the bottom until you reach the correct place on the dipstick...top one.

You need to use 80/90 EP marine gear oil.
Automotive oil is not made to withstand the pressure or water intrusion that may take place.
TheMarineDoctor 3 years ago
no it wont, you need mercury gear oil.

I heard a little bit of milkyness is ok, is this true? Are mercury lower end gear housings vented?
