@hathganus If I remember correctly, the pilot uses the same model at all his airshows. These machines are completely stock. This one was leased locally.
The pilot is a competitor from the UK. He was giving a demo (I think in NV) on a very hot day. In an interview later on he admitted he set his altimiter wrong as he was not used to that he. He helo blades didn't have as much "lift" in the heat and altitude. His helicopter is made for compitition and has lots of safety features built in. I believe his only injury was a broken nose. The man is a truly fantastic pilot.
The pilot is a helicopter stunt pilot thats why the loop so close to the ground... he was performing at an airshow... He is also like the most experienced helicopter stunt pilot in the world
The Pilot Mr "Kenyan" shows what will happen when you mess with the limits published in the RFM and did he Pay for the helicopter? or see the NTSB or FAA before he ran home? Chuck Aaron with the Red Bull Helicopter puts on a better show, and the MBB 105 is CERTIFIED AEROBATIC unlike the Hughes 269.
For anyone who posted a negative comment about this clip, please take a few things in consideration. (1) There are not a lot of pilots in the world who have 15000 hours of time in a fixed wing aircraft, much less in a rotor aircraft. This guy is top one percent, of one percent in the world. (2) To have one crash in 15000 flight hours is the equivalent of the average person driving between 700000 and 800000 miles without an accident. Very few people can even accomplish that on four wheels.
You are right, but that's no reason to finish off a poor little old Hughes 269, or whatever. Too bad he didn't have en extra 50 ft, but glad that he made it out alive.
Wait... I don't understand...why are there 23 likes and 49 dislikes? The title says the helicopter will crash (which it does). It is not a flight simulator video... and its not a fake crash or anything like that "crazy one wing landing plane that was edited by a blind graphics art major" ... someone fill me in please.
this is dennis kenyon, i've been lucky enough to be at a few airshows and have seen his routines up very close. i was even more fortunate to see his last ever public display in september this year and will probably never see another pilot so skilled again. not bad for a 70 odd year old geezer. total legend
In flight school I figured something out really quick about the helicopters versus the planes i fly, "Helicopters do not fly, they merely beat the air into submission"lol
Glad Dennis was OK. As he said on TV, it was his error. As a former world helo aerobatic champion, he really knows his stuff, but this was a mistake. It only takes one, and this was a lucky escape, thank goodness.
fwiw, this was part of his regular routine that I have watched and enjoyed dozens of times, but the fun has gone out of it now.
Holy crap, i've never seen a 300 handled that way, he obviously was a good pilot, but no one's bulletproof, He needed another 80 feet to get outta that. Poor guy, but i'm screwed if i'd take that risk, especially in a piston engined 300
The number of intuitive remarks this video has generated is incredible...LOL. There is usually a very fine line between bravery and insanity when it comes to flying helicopters...that's why I love flying them...BWAHAHAHA. However, I doubt I would ever muster the courage to intentionally roll or loop one...there are old pilots and bold pilots...but there are damn few (if any) old-bold pilots. Sometimes when you mess with the bull you'll get the horns...but I'm glad the pilot walked away.
i have personally had over 100 hours in this helicopter and know that they drop like rocks.... to do this stunt in this helicopter at that alt is just stupid.
3D a Schweitzer lol. Nice try though. I seem to remember that the pilot did advanced heli maneuvering for airshows, so he's not a bad pilot really, just got a little too low that day.
500 ft more and he was good, actually thats really common on loops even on youtube you can find at least 5 vids witch the pilots cames out the loop and then hits the ground, i did some of my training hours on a decathlon, just for fun, and i can tell that the forces on you on the acrobatics don´t turn thing any easy ... for show purpose pilots put the plane on the limit, sometimes they cross the limit aaand....
I don't think the machine experienced negative G's in the maneuver, or else the main rotor blades would have flapped excessively, chopping off the tail boom. With sufficient altitude the pilot would have safely completed the loop. You're right, though: Articulated rotor systems aren't a good choice for helicopter aerobatics.
I don't think his name is Dick - I think it's Dennis. If I'm right and it is him, Dennis is an ex Royal Air Force fixed wing pilot who has been involved in rotary wing flying instruction for 30 years.
He has +13,000 flying hours qualified to instruct and he is the former world freestyle aerobatic champion...
xoio = Dumb. When we see you flying a helicopter at all, much less well, then you might have room to comment. Until then you are nothing but a dingleberry on society's asshole.
"I DO fly fixed wing" Which isn't rotary wing. Which means you are about as qualified to comment on this man's competency as Rosie O'Donnel.
"degree in aeronautical engineering" Really? How many automotive engineers are great race car drivers?
"Great pilot he may be, but he's NOT PERFECT!" Never said he was. Said he is better than you have ever dreamed of being, and your comments on his mistake are like a white belt criticising a black belt's technique. Dumb. Immature.
Nobody's perfect, so that's a meaningless remark. With all due respect, an aeroplane is incomparable to a helicopter, as are the respective levels of expertise and coordination. Show some humility.
As a retired Army Aviator, I'd say the altimeter did not contribute to the accident because the pilot's head was so far up his ass he never would have seen the altimeter
He could've got a little of his own downwash cause the idiot DID do a flip. Might've pulled it off if he had more altitude. Key to remember here though, don't do flips in a fucking helicopter...
Ah there we go... now i getcha... Yea, that would definitely do it. Yep, they come out of the flip, and pull up slowly because they think they're at like 80 ft, but in truth they're falling like a rock. Good show Destroyed in Seconds, pretty cool... discovery is where its at lol
Don't think so... It was NOT on any autopilot, they're flying by the yoke, and even if their gauge freaked out, they wouldn't repsond by pulling up and trying to do a flip in the air... They're either incompetent or stupid enough to try to do acrobatics with a helicpoter.
This has nothing to do with vortex ring state - that tends only to happen when the flow of air is recirculated around the blades, hence if its moving through clean air, its not going to happen.
it's cuz they were in a high place so the air is more spread apart plus the fact it was really hot outside made it so the props didn't have enough air to bite into to pull out in time
Trying to do a loop in a non turbine engine helicopter is fail.

I mean really, is there anything more pointless than helicopter aerobatics?;
"Ground, we'll just have to hover here inverted for a while and dry the helipad off" or,
"Hotel Charlie, you're cleared to land the helipad, could you please conduct all you flight tailfirst so we can log you as a departure?" or.
"Boss, missile coming!!"
"Hah, I'll just do a slow roll, that'll fool it!"
Perhaps he had a medical retirement with "excessively flattened ass cheeks" or "permanently bruised scrotum"?
