When we hatched our chickens, we got told from internet and stuff not to help in the process, there was one bird which starting tweeting first, then it couldn't break the egg open, because i got told not to help with this, it didn't hatch. . .all it wouldn't have taken is 2 mins with something like a knife or something to pop a air hole in or something, but i got told not to do anything, the chicken didn't make it. . .: /
@nazzarran I understand how you feel. Witnessing the harsh reality of natural selection invokes your emotions and insticts to help nurture life. That's what makes us human and unique in the natural order of life. Don't beat yourself up. The chick was probably malformed and would not have lived even had it hatched. Keep in mind when you invest yourself in nuturing life there are going to be times when you feel helpless and will experience pain as well as JOY and satisfaction. That's life.
@GloVermont2 Yeah well this was a while back lol, we actually hatched 22 chickens. But we gave 19 away and kept 3, one died due to being egg bound, and the other 2 are nice and healthy, although one of them attacks me in every way possible whenever i go near it, and the other is quite content and adventuress.! :)
Hatching is a really challenging process for chicks. They are supposed to hatch on their own and punch through the shell with their beak. It's really hard to do for them.
@brender1976 You are correct. There is an imbilical cord with vital nutrients still attached that if prematurely disengaged from the chick causes harm.
@FuntomArtist666 Just long enough for them to dry and fluff up. Then we transfer them to a box with an infrared heat lamp and wood shavings in the bottom, a folded newspaper to put the chick feed onto, and a little smooth rimmed can no more than 2 inches high for water.
We raise them for about three weeks this way then set put them into a pen outside seperate from the grown chickens for another month or so before setting them loose in the yard.
i was about to ask you why you didn't help the poor chick but there was an annotation that said that helping might hurt the chick or deprive of it it's last nutrients from the embryl that's in the egg.
@HarukishiAzami1 The "X" is on one side - an "O" on the opposite side. It helps to indentify the correct side of the egg when you turn the eggs every 8 hours.
how do you make these? I mean like do you just put in a regular egg or is there a particular egg for it : D sorry im asking something dumb but i want to know
@linarahmany It's exhausted....you see how cute they are when they dry and fluff up. Then they get real active in spurts. They'll run about and then just sort of suddenly fall asleep for a minute then wake and play and fall asleep again, and so on.

Just wondering if you have any advice on how to integrate/introduce 10 new chicks to an existing flock of 16 hens and 1 rooster. They are due to hatch June 1st.
I built a seperate mobile pen with 2x4's fours and chicken wire and handles for moving. It's about 10x10 and 4 ft high. We do this to give the baby chicks a headstart for just about two weeks so the chicks are strong enough to deal with establishing their place in the pecking order. Then we integrate them. Then we observe to try to indentify any new roosters to be culled first. It's imortant to know that about 12 hens per rooster is a good balance.
once my uncle bought 2 eggs home and i told my mother to boil me 1...when my mother broke the egg there was a chick in it thank god my mother has soft hands so she didnt break the egg real hard, therefore the chick was living.later i gave it to my cousin...
once my uncle bought 2 eggs home and i told my mother to boil me 1...when my mother broke the egg there was a chick in it thank god my mother has soft hands so she didnt break the egg real hard, therefore the chick was living.later i gave it to my cousin...
It's ok to open the lid while a chick is hatching. Of course several more are still to hatch. So we close the lid after just a few minutes so we can keep the environment variables safe for the remaining chicks to hatch.
You're right the chick is tired and vunerable because the chick has to struggle for about 36 hours during the hatching process.
We feed them "starter mash" and spring water for about 1 week. Then we bring them outside were they begin their pasture raised diet supplemented with fresh spring water each day.
Awwww wonderful vid. My two doves are currently incubating an egg and it's due at the end of the month. I can't wait. This will be their 3rd chick and every time it happens I'm still in a world of amazement.
What would happen if the chick can't get the shell off? like say if its foot is stuck or something..also, after it hatches, i noticed how it was still curled up and all. what happens afterwards? does it just stand normally or do you have to give it like a special batch of food or something (to make stronger maybe)?
If you are sure the part of the shell attached to the chicks imbilical cord is naturally shed then you could help if an unusual situation exists. After it hatches it needs to be in a dry warm area. The chick dry's and then fluffs up. The first day or so it is adorable because the natching is so exhaustng that the chicks will be very active for a bit and then almost suddenly fall asleep on the spot....then wake and act...sleep...wake....you get the idea.
@chiwassu19 i don't know 100% about the first one but i know about the others, after it hatches it lays there for a short amount of time then as it's instinct tells it it starts trying to get up and move around but its tough for them because they're tired after hatching but eventually they are able to stop falling over and actually stand, and I'm pretty sure there's no special food.
Good observation and question! That's how I learned not to help the chick! I made a mistake. Because I "helped" the chick, it is smaller than the others. That is also why I published the notation in the video.
@LadyNightstalker666 no need to get your panties in a bunch. the chick was already out, the shell was just sitting on its back at that point. you can obviously tell he didn't help it out of it's shell.

@LoveJBE The X and O's are what I use to mark each side of the egg so when I turn them I knw which side of the egg facing up. The eggs are turned every 8 hours or so. If the eggs are all X's up I know to turn them all so that the O's now are up and so on.
@100123belle Belle that's amusing. The little chick could not freeze because we love those little chicks and would never let such a thing happen. Besides it was April or May and plenty warm out.
@GloVermont2 they just hatched and the lid is open they wouldnt freeze but would get really cold and die but sorry for being noisy im just a animal lover freak and do u have any tips on hatching chicks cuz im gunna be hatching chicks and i dont want them to die
i have some question my chicken are laying every day do they need a male chicken with the female for a chick to hatch .and do you need to put the eggs in an incubator for it to hatch and how long does it take to hatch? pleas answer these questions
@nastygeezer The male chicken or rooster is needed to fertilize the eggs. Then the eggs need to be incubated. It takes approximately 21 days to hatch.
Actually the mesh floor is perfect. All the yucky fluids that foster bacteria and unsanitary conditions flows through so the chicks don't get all dirty when they are hatching. They only stay in the incubator until they are nice and fluffed up and dry. Then we transfer them to the heated brood box to care for them.
cool

Hi ChrisDiaz83 - The egg can only be fertile if a rooster mates with the hen before she lays her egg.

@GloVermont2 ok but my bird sits and warms the egg so even if it isnt fertile will it hatch?
chrisdiaz83 7 months ago

GloVermont2 7 months ago
@chrisdiaz83 it has to be fertalized from a rooster to hatch

THAT BABY CHICK IS NEW BORN AND YOUR OPENING THE LID HE CAN FREEZE!!!!!!!!! >:(

@100123belle Belle that's amusing. The little chick could not freeze because we love those little chicks and would never let such a thing happen. Besides it was April or May and plenty warm out.

i have some question my chicken are laying every day do they need a male chicken with the female for a chick to hatch .and do you need to put the eggs in an incubator for it to hatch and how long does it take to hatch? pleas answer these questions
nastygeezer 1 year ago
@nastygeezer The male chicken or rooster is needed to fertilize the eggs. Then the eggs need to be incubated. It takes approximately 21 days to hatch.

i'll never have eggs for breakfast ever again=(...is this what the yolk will be if we dont eat them?
kpacman6 1 year ago
@kpacman6
No... eggs sold for food aren't fertilized, meaning that there is no chick. The yolk is used to feed chick while it is in the egg.

not a very good place for them to hatch...the bars are not good for there feet
amira1295 1 year ago
Actually the mesh floor is perfect. All the yucky fluids that foster bacteria and unsanitary conditions flows through so the chicks don't get all dirty when they are hatching. They only stay in the incubator until they are nice and fluffed up and dry. Then we transfer them to the heated brood box to care for them.
