Very good advice....you should always warm up before taking off, full speed. And remember, if you can't play it well at slow speed....then it surely won't sound good at full speed. Also, vibrato work and technique development is very important. It's what helps make your sustained notes "sing".
i didnt realize he was so deep about his playing. i thought he was more show boating and lighting speed. It took me years to figure out to start slow then go fast, like athletes. wise words michael.
mab is right thier are to many fast players on youtube and as he said about their vibrato its too short basically most of the speed freaks could never vibrato like eric clapton or any quality rock guitarist so they do need to learn to walk before they can run i admit i was 1 of those fools who tried to learn fast shredding like yngwie or paul gilbert from day 1 i had the speed but no technique so i slowed it down and gradually went from there mab gives good advice guys
I actually don't like Michael's playing (just not my thing) - but this is really good advice. He makes a lot of sense and I have a few students that really need to see this video!!
@XxxxxJamesxxxX Some people really have the ability to do this since day 1... My friend Jeremy played lightning fast when he first picked up the almighty axe.
@metallica24475 No. Speed comes from accuracy. Maybe he could tremolo pick, but that's not the same thing. If he could really play like a master from the first time he picked up a guitar, why would he have to ever practice?
U place that tumb proudly over the neck ye man, I had one guitar lesson and quite, he tried to get me to stop putting my thumb over the top of the neck, and other thing's ect, fcking balls, hendrex had his hammer thumb over the neck, lot's of great players do, if it works for U that's the key, the same as some can get good vibrato without putting thumb over the neck, not everyone sounds crap that way, the same as some sound crap the way he is saying do it, each to their own
@zombiecheese11 the thing is some people suck doing it his way as well, and some sound good the other way, each to their own, thumb over the neck was always classed as the wrong way by the majority, although I have mine over the neck from the 1st fret up to around 5th, hurts if I don't, even have it their for chords
@UKToneKing - how do you play an F chord or any barre chord for that matter with your thumb flopped over? i try not to flop mine over even with C(where it can mute) because it gets in the way of pivoting to and from other chords but to each their own.
position of the thumb doesn't matter if you're not using it anyway. some will vibrato like in his first example even with the thumb over the neck. only good reasons to use thumb with average to small hands are muting and leverage.
@NolitaDenise well some people use their thumb 2 play bar chords, they use the thumb 4 the low E & rest of the fingers as normal, hendrix did it all the time, as do I, in fact some of the hendrix songs require u 2 use the thumb 4 certain notes, the start of vodoo child is a prime exampled, what ever works 4 each person, I find it easy 2 play a c chord with thumb hanging over, I do that all the time, not through trying, mainly through habit, it does not get in the way of my playing, so why change
@NolitaDenise some chords I do not have it over, only because the natural way to play them chords will not allow me to do it, but were I have a choice, like the c and some bar chords, I have had thumb over out of habit, I am 33 so my hands are fully grown, I don't have small fat hands, I have medium I would say, and pretty long fingers compared to some, so I can grip the neck to play an a bar chord and easily have my thumb over with comfort,
@NolitaDenise I really bealeve that the best way to learn guitar is to sit and learn yourself, that is because I have done that with great results, learn your scales and chords every day, even when U are good, still go over them, follow that plan every day and mess around after U have done it, teach all your fingers to move properly ect I know plays that are awesome, but ask them what key they are in, and they have no idea, that is why I learnt myself theory, as well as practical, love learning
@UKToneKing I believe having an experienced, good guitar teacher that can guide you is a way better aproach to learning to be a musician. Yes, learning alone is a good technique but allowing a teacher to help guide you in your path to becoming a musician will greatly improve your skills in a shorter amount of time.
@RocksWithWings each to their own, I like the fact I have learnt myself, and learnt my own style, some teachers try to get U to do things how they would do it, and when it comes to style that is not a good thing in my opinion, the satisfaction U get after learning yourself is awesome, especially when one day everything just works, some great guitar players never get lessons and some do, mark knoplfer is a prime example of what a self taught musician can acive, he has never had lessons,
it's not about speed people, it's about feeling. it's not how fast you can play it, it's how you play it...from the heart. listen to hendrix, van halen, rhoads, santana, slash, they aren't fast shredders but their leads have meaning and structure. listening to this guy and malmsteen playing 100mph appregios can get quite boring!
@sixslinger you ever think that shredders play from the heart as well? sorry, but people saying ignorant things like this is getting old. That chill that goes up your spine and makes the hairs on your arms stand up when you hear something truly beautiful and meaningful from a song? Yeah, I get that when I listen to guys like Malmsteen, Becker, etc. Just because YOU don't feel anything from shred doesn't mean there's no feeling there. Shred and blues are both great genres. Enjoy them both.
yeaahh I TOTALLY AGREE. When I tried to play fast without warming up, I sounded LIKE A TOTAL IDIOT and a freaking newb. But after warming up with playing slowly I SOUNDED awesome.
MAB is a pioneer of the modern "shred" guitar genre. MAB is an innovator, was signed to Shrapnel Records, is an inventor, tours the world year after year, has been signed to 2 major labels and has over 50,000,000 views on YouTube. Don't compare MAB to local guitar teachers and players that have never been signed to major labels or toured. That is like comparing a college running back to an NFL player.
I agree (for the most part.) I think young persons forget how influential Michael's first instructional video was. His first VHS video was THE SPARK that led to better technique in the metal guitar community. The videos by other instructors at the time were horrible. This was WAY before YouTube. No one knew how the hell to sweep-pick or play fast and clean scale runs like "Yingvee." The transcriptions in magazines and books were all wrong. Michael showed us how it was done.
@TimeLordGuitar I saw his first video, WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY back...and realized I was sweeping when I switched strings. His video made me realize my mistake! I had the EXACT same experience about "never being able to nail anything" because I went "down-up-down-down-up-down-down...etc". I wish I had seend it when I was 14, because at 23, its took me years of muscle memory to undo my error. Maybe Gambale could make that work....I couldn't. Great stuff my MAB
i got one question how play the guitar better and faster. i have been working on my alternate picking so it would be faster and its not getting there and ive been playing 4 a year now
Anyone potentially could put in 8 to 10 hours a day of practice to get their chops up to speed but very few people have the drive to do so, that is where the 'talent' part lies, its essentially just patience. Once again though this has nothing to do with the original point where you stated that the slower you can play the more talented you are which is just ridiculous.
I agree with aspects of what Batio is saying here but he didnt really answer the question....at all. He just went on a rant about how although it may seem like there are guys on youtube with good chops they are actually crap...
Then your piano teacher is a bit pretentious isnt he/she?
By that definition people who have never played an instrument are just as talented at it as those who have been playing for decades because they could play at 1 bpm (as slow as its possible to play) just like an expert can.
If people who NEVER played an instruments can play a very difficult piece (as for example chopin, rachmaninoff or liszt etudes) COMPLETELY CORRECT at 1 bpm they are prodigies in my opinion. So yes they are.
I can play the main theme of flight of the bumblebee on piano at a snails pace as a friend of mine taught it to me to demonstrate how difficult it is to play up to speed and keep in sync. I am an awful piano player, never had any lessons but I can do that really reallly reaaaallly slowly. If your skill as a piano player is really measured in how slow you can play then I must be amazing?
What if I played one note of it every minuite? That would be astoundingly slow, would that make me a prodigy?
If you play the COMPLETE piece COMPLETELY correct, let's say even one note per minute, (would take like 8 hours to play it) yes you would be a prodigy. Because it's particularly really hard to play 8 hours (probably even more) at one sitting.
not if you were doing 1 note a min it wouldnt be, ive done more than that amount practicing guitar before...just put the tv on if you get bored! So that would make me a virtuoso piano player right?
Someone who has never touched a piano before can play a series of notes really really really really really slowly, but would not be able to play them really really fast cleanly without years of practice.
As I said before, you need to be able to play slow to play fast NOT the other way round.
The thing is that you would NEVER NEVER NEVER do that! You wouldn't have the stamina that's it . If you disagree do it!
post a video! And you will be a prodigy player.
Actually it doesn't matter. Speed has more or less nothing to do with talent. Because nobody can grab an instruments and start playing 20 nps CORRECTLY for the first time. Speed has something to do with practicing.
If you practicing a really big amount of time a day you will shurely get faster to fast speed than anybody who practice only a little. Talent is measured how much time you would need of constant practice to get to that speed. If for example you're more talented than me you would need 2 hours to get a certain lick to a certain speed and I would need four. In my opinion talent is how much you can get with doing the less possible.
But that's only my difinition if your definition is different
This has nothing to do with what we were talking about before...Buut anyway lets run with it, studies of orchestras have been taken with regards to practice time and instrument skill (look em up) and ALL of them showed that the skill level was directly proportional to the practice time, ie those who practiced the most did the best, there were NO students who put in little practice but went to the top of the class, it just does not work like that.
you could teach a monkey to push a set of buttons every minute or every hour but you could not teach one to play a complex piece at 200 bpm (sixteenths).
Shawn Lane is a perfect example, widely regarded as one of the best guitar players of all time. Check out his really early stuff when he was still a teenager. He had great alternate picking chops because he had put in a huge amount of time but his compositional skills were very poor because he had not practiced that aspect much. Then check out his more recent work which people know him by where he has been practicing composition as hard as he used to practice picking and he has created some of
the most beautiful guitar music I have ever heard. The 'talent' aspect was that he had the drive to practice more than anyone else, it was not because he was born knowing all the scales and which ones would sound best in any given situation, he just practiced them really hard.
Composition is no different to speed in that aspect, practice it harder and you will get better, the more time you put in to music the better you will get.
Nothing to do with the slower you can play the better you are.
once again, you need to be able to play slowly to play fast, but that is NOT the same as saying the slower you can play the better you are...at all. The faster you can play the better your chops are because you have practiced playing slowly for long enough to build them up....aanyways this is a slightly moronic argument to drag out for this long..
chops=technique, to play cleanly fast takes better technique than to play cleanly slow thus the faster you are the better your chops. Provided you are playing cleanly...but I would have thought that goes without saying.
Having great chops does not make you a great musician automatically of course but you should aim to have technique good enough to facilitate any ideas that come to your head. You shouldnt really limit yourself to 120 bpm, we would have no moonlight sonata if beethoven did that!
If you have terrible technique you will struggle hard to play cleanly at speed, but if you have terrible technique you can still play most things cleanly at very low tempos. I doubt you would find a single musician who would disagree with that.
But that's only my difinition. If your definition is different, then our opinions will never match up. Please tell me your definition of talent so I could understand your view more.
the quote implies that the best players in the world are the slowest, so stretching a piece out for say a note every hour or every day would thus make you the best player in the world presumably?
For sure that is taking it to silly levels but im just demonstrating the ridiculousness of that quote. To play fast accurately you need to be able to play slow first, its NOT the other way round. Presumably your teacher told you what he did to try and encourage you to practice slowly, not because its literally true.
Man, I couldn't agree with him more on this xD I teach guitar and there's so many kids who just want to play fast, and of course they do, everyone loves playing fast. It's like trying to sprint before you can crawl though.
lol good analogy. hey im just askin cuase you said you teach guitar but i play mostly metal and im tryin to learn how to improvise better and whenever i improvise ill just play the minor pentatonic over and over again randomly. do u have any advise on using scales or what scales i should learn? thanks
okay thanks man. i found this website called chordbook . com that ive been usin to learn scales but im not sure if it has every position for each scale how many should there be?
Very good advice....you should always warm up before taking off, full speed. And remember, if you can't play it well at slow speed....then it surely won't sound good at full speed. Also, vibrato work and technique development is very important. It's what helps make your sustained notes "sing".

If people who NEVER played an instruments can play a very difficult piece (as for example chopin, rachmaninoff or liszt etudes) COMPLETELY CORRECT at 1 bpm they are prodigies in my opinion. So yes they are.
RediForKing 2 years ago
I can play the main theme of flight of the bumblebee on piano at a snails pace as a friend of mine taught it to me to demonstrate how difficult it is to play up to speed and keep in sync. I am an awful piano player, never had any lessons but I can do that really reallly reaaaallly slowly. If your skill as a piano player is really measured in how slow you can play then I must be amazing?
What if I played one note of it every minuite? That would be astoundingly slow, would that make me a prodigy?
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
If you play the COMPLETE piece COMPLETELY correct, let's say even one note per minute, (would take like 8 hours to play it) yes you would be a prodigy. Because it's particularly really hard to play 8 hours (probably even more) at one sitting.
RediForKing 2 years ago
not if you were doing 1 note a min it wouldnt be, ive done more than that amount practicing guitar before...just put the tv on if you get bored! So that would make me a virtuoso piano player right?
Someone who has never touched a piano before can play a series of notes really really really really really slowly, but would not be able to play them really really fast cleanly without years of practice.
As I said before, you need to be able to play slow to play fast NOT the other way round.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
The thing is that you would NEVER NEVER NEVER do that! You wouldn't have the stamina that's it . If you disagree do it!
post a video! And you will be a prodigy player.
Actually it doesn't matter. Speed has more or less nothing to do with talent. Because nobody can grab an instruments and start playing 20 nps CORRECTLY for the first time. Speed has something to do with practicing.
RediForKing 2 years ago
If you practicing a really big amount of time a day you will shurely get faster to fast speed than anybody who practice only a little. Talent is measured how much time you would need of constant practice to get to that speed. If for example you're more talented than me you would need 2 hours to get a certain lick to a certain speed and I would need four. In my opinion talent is how much you can get with doing the less possible.
But that's only my difinition if your definition is different
RediForKing 2 years ago
This has nothing to do with what we were talking about before...Buut anyway lets run with it, studies of orchestras have been taken with regards to practice time and instrument skill (look em up) and ALL of them showed that the skill level was directly proportional to the practice time, ie those who practiced the most did the best, there were NO students who put in little practice but went to the top of the class, it just does not work like that.
The 'talent' in it I guess is those who have the

It works . Take Shawn Lane

you could teach a monkey to push a set of buttons every minute or every hour but you could not teach one to play a complex piece at 200 bpm (sixteenths).
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
so what is you opinion?
RediForKing 2 years ago

MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
once again, you need to be able to play slowly to play fast, but that is NOT the same as saying the slower you can play the better you are...at all. The faster you can play the better your chops are because you have practiced playing slowly for long enough to build them up....aanyways this is a slightly moronic argument to drag out for this long..
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
"The faster you can play the better your chops " lol absolutely not! :))
RediForKing 2 years ago
chops=technique, to play cleanly fast takes better technique than to play cleanly slow thus the faster you are the better your chops.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
If you have terrible technique you will struggle hard to play cleanly at speed, but if you have terrible technique you can still play most things cleanly at very low tempos. I doubt you would find a single musician who would disagree with that.

But that's only my difinition. If your definition is different, then our opinions will never match up. Please tell me your definition of talent so I could understand your view more.
Thanks

patience and drive to practice correctly and for longer periods, thats it. Speed is something gained from practice just like everything else.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
YES but that doesn't contradict to what I just said!
RediForKing 2 years ago
the quote implies that the best players in the world are the slowest, so stretching a piece out for say a note every hour or every day would thus make you the best player in the world presumably?
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
For sure that is taking it to silly levels but im just demonstrating the ridiculousness of that quote. To play fast accurately you need to be able to play slow first, its NOT the other way round. Presumably your teacher told you what he did to try and encourage you to practice slowly, not because its literally true.
MetalguitarlessonsUK 2 years ago
my problem is never how to play fast its always what to play fast
metallicatriviumPwN 2 years ago
Man, I couldn't agree with him more on this xD I teach guitar and there's so many kids who just want to play fast, and of course they do, everyone loves playing fast. It's like trying to sprint before you can crawl though.

lol good analogy. hey im just askin cuase you said you teach guitar but i play mostly metal and im tryin to learn how to improvise better and whenever i improvise ill just play the minor pentatonic over and over again randomly. do u have any advise on using scales or what scales i should learn? thanks
rickyjshiznit 2 years ago
Learn the Major and Harmonic Minor scales. They're great ones to mess around with. :D
Shanebyrne88 2 years ago
okay thanks man. i found this website called chordbook . com that ive been usin to learn scales but im not sure if it has every position for each scale how many should there be?
rickyjshiznit 2 years ago
@rickyjshiznit
I'm going to offer some advice on this because the other guy disappeared.
Memorise the guitar neck.
Yes, it takes a while, but try and say the notes you are playing out loud when you practice etc. and it will stick.
Then you won't have to worry about shapes any more when you improvise :-).
