  • Gus was the best of the best.... until he took and arrow to the knee

  • If the Television gods, screenwriters and powers that be don't get together and make another western with Robert Duval and Tommy lee Jones while those guys are still living............... it would be an epic disaster for our legacy to the world of great westerns.

  • I remember. Watching this movie. When i was. Younger

  • Pea Eye is about as thick headed as they come.

  • Tim Scott was a tremendous actor.

  • No shit, a buddy of mine and I were working on a movie with Robert Duvall today, so we saw a once in a lifetime opportunity to give him the Comanche call. Rob walks into the room, we do the call and Rob does a 180 and retreats! What a fail!

  • The arrow that got Gus... ironic it was of course indians that in the end got him... he never got blueduck etc., considering him and Cpt. Call were "two of the most famous (along with Jake Spoon) Texas rangers that ever lived."

Probably hands down the best story and western ever... but like my dad says... halfway into part 3 and all the wya to the end it gets just plain sad. heh.

    "Your God****** vanity!"- Call

  • The thrill here for Gus is riding with the buffalo... kinda like swimming with the whales. Being a part of an wonderful scene and knowing that you belong to something more incredible than yourself. This is a case of the sum of the parts is greater than the whole of them. Great entry Dollar53.. Insightful and full of deep meaning.

  • @rabbicaiaphas Wow that's as deep as it gets! Very good analogy !!!!

  • Thank you Dollar53 for posting this! I love this movie and this is one of my favorite parts!!! Hey I am a woman but it's ok I cried when Gus died too.

  • Gus is my Hero.. "all part of gods plan that you are one"

  • im seventeen and this movie is fucken amazing i literally just got done watching the whole thing an hour ago noth lonesome dove and the return to lonesome dove i wish life was like thiss still

  • I hate our time now. (im 16) its so dumb and technologic or whatever. I wanna ride a horse to school. not a car. sure its further and longer. but oh well. but everyone respected eachother and were all good hard working americans. i wanna go on a cattle drive. BTW this is my favorite movie.

  • "I don't believe I'd wanna chase buffalo even if I was married.' LOL! Funniest line in the movie and I've seen it a thousand times. Ya'll are right, they don't make em like this anymore.

  • Gus. is. a. boss.!!!!! if only life was still like this. no Xboxes and ps3's and fancy cellular crap.

P.S. this is coming from a 16 year old

  • Actually, hIs name's not Pete. They called him Pea Eye. Excellent part of an excellent movie. Best western ever made.

  • Ahhh...An 18 pack of Budweiser...a can of Copenhagen...and Lonesome Dove...that's a good night!

  • Best

    TV Production

    Ever!

  • Around 1900 only a few buffalo were left. It's awesome that we have now restored the great American Bison.

  • The History Channel ran a Lonesome Dove segment last year ~ Gus and Call were based on REAL ex-Tx Rangers Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving, that broke a new trail to lead a herd of cattle to New Mexico. Oliver (Gus) was scouting ahead with "PeaEye" and attacked/trapped just like this. They found Pea Eye disoriented in the desert... Oliver somehow made his way to a fort. Charles Goodnight found him & was w/ him when he died. He honored Oliver's wish to be buried back in Texas. :o)

  • @MzPlaneta Totally true. The Colonel's #1 man, like Deets, was an ex-slave named Boze Ikerd. Oliver, Charlie and Boze, all three of their graves are State of Texas historical sites. They blazed the first drover trails in the West. The Colonel invented the chuckwagon. Unlike Woodrow, Charlie Goodnight married twice. His last to a 27 year old woman at the age of 91. Spent his last two years with her in Tucson.

  • Gus was the best!

  • John Marston and Landon Ricketts chasing American Buffalo in the Great Plains.

  • The mans name was Pea, not Pete.

  • Ol Pea may have been a slow thinker, but he didn't hesitate to come to Gus's aid. Dropped one Indian with the rifle and charged.

  • I am going to purchase the complete series .....

Its on Amazon ... The complete series !

  • Well he was a slow walker too when that buffalo got through with him LOL ! ! !

  • YOU GET WHAT YOU GET. WHEN YOU INVADE INDIAN TERRITORY. WITHOUT A PASS.

  • worse mistake gus ever made in his life. while he still had two legs.

  • This was a very funny seen in the movie, the only one of it's kind so far I think.

  • Pea Eyes is so bad with the rifle

  • Gus i the best character ever and Robert Duvall was born to play him. Thank Gpd we got to see it.

  • AH GAWD, GUS !

  • Best damn western ever. My two boys love the "Went For a Ride" video

  • I know what "Gus" meens when he says to chase the buffalo for sport,, Not many hands get to do that or ever will, I have the honor to do this many times a year in South Dakota's Custer State Park, Black Hills, and the best part of that, I get to carry Old Glory doing it. ( Buffalo Roundup Custer State Park on Youtube)

  • No, not only don't make them like that anymore, JAFO1950, they never made one like it before or since. That one was one of a kind, and the best Western ever made.

  • @dollar53---fine actin with fine actors from one of the best movies ever. Gus is great!!!!!

  • Pea Eye is so sweet. Slow but sweet. I wish someone would upload this entire series. It is wonderful.

  • Why don't you buy the DVD off ebay like I did? Lonesome dove was made back in the day when they knew what the viewer wanted, unlike this reality TV crap they keep feeding us with now. I don't think they could get a bunch of decent actors together nowadays to make a western.

  • Gus is a 1800's John Wayne!

  • @pigmanobvious What did you mean by saying that Gus is a 1800's John Wayne, what do you mean by that?

  • @COWBOYMACLEOD I was using "John Wayne" as a meta4 4 superhero.

I suspect where your going in your ?. Dont worry I believe we are on the same side

  • the book is a thousand times better. roger mcmurtry wrote a whole series about gus and call's adventures and the dialog is amazing. Highly reccomend it. one of the great american novelists. by the way his name is pea not pete.

  • I absolutely LOVE this movie!! GUS is awesome!!! :) I miss movies like this!!

  • This scene was shot at the Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico. It is the National Boy Scout Ranch

  • When we went there I looked for this place at the ranch because of the movie

  • @sharjoy64 you must be mistaken.

  • his name isn't Pete, it's Pea... Pea Eye

  • Hell

They dont make em like that anymore Its just to bad I cant go back in time to a time in History where I could be a part of that era and finish out my life where it really means somthing

    Don

  • @donteventry99 @dollar53 @JAFO1950 They probably make em like that forever and ever Its just never bad I can really go back in time to a time in History where I could be a part of that era and finish out some of my life where it really means somthing, as there's still forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010 as those top best years of 1996-2010 will forever and ever come back to us again as there'll forever and ever be another repeated again right here again in real life forever and ever

  • @JAFO1950 Oh Don, don't be that way. You can be Gus right where you are and NOW. Living like Gus is all about attitude. You could put Gus in modern Manhattan and he would still be Gus. He would still be living with gusto. He still would be a best friend. He would still be grateful for each day's new adventures. The wild west didn't make Gus's life. Gus made the west an awesome adventure, and would do the same with Manhattan. It's not about time or place, but about your attitude. Be Gus NOW!

  • That is my favorite scene from the movie. That interaction between Gus and Pea or whatever his name is was hilliiarous. However, you should have let it play about two seconds longer and got the part where Gus says: "Hell no I ain't alright!!"

That was priceless. I love Duvall!!!

  • Tim Scott was a very under rated character actor. He was wonderful as Pea Eye.

  • @BullpenBoss o yea man he was probably the best 1 ,such an good actor ,he was great in returning to lonesome dove too.

  • I love GUS!

  • I cried when Gus died, even an old man like me loves a good show.

  • You are not the only one that cried! There was a man that knew how to really live!

  • I cried too, aint no shame in that I reckon.

  • @dollar53 same here , you know gus is a REAL MAN when you see hem

  • @dollar53 MAKES YOU FEEL YOUR MORTALITY ,DON'T IT. COULD BE YOU TOMMORROW.

  • @dollar53 @donteventry99 @dollar53 @JAFO1950 They probably make em like that forever and ever Its just never bad I can really go back in time to a time in History where I could be a part of that era and finish out some of my life where it really means somthing, as there's still forever and ever gonna be another 1996-2010 as those top best years of 1996-2010 will forever and ever come back to us again as there'll forever and ever be another repeated again right here again in real life

  • @dollar53 i've seen this film 1000 and can't ever watch from Gus's death on. I'm not ashamed to say it's the only film that gets me choked up. The best part about this scene, and the worst, is that it's just Gus being Gus, loving life, and he gets killed for it.

  • @MattCockburn i am a woman--i don't think i have watched 1000 times--but maybe 25. from a woman's perspective--the saddest part is when gus leaves lorena at claire's house--and then when captain call brings his body back by on the way to bury him in texas and lorena stays up all night standing over the casket. and how about when deets dies? and how when pea gets lost a deets points him in the right direction? i am sure i'll watch it another 25 times before i die

  • @1pupblacky oh they are all sad parts. the deets death and call bringing gus's body back are very heavy from a male's point of view too. deets because these guys lost another close friend (let's not forget Gus's great reaction shot when they hang Jake) and Call's journey back because he gave his best friend his word and he will die in the effort to make good on it. that's what real men do. what a movie! i gott awatch it for the 1001st time now.

  • @dollar53 you are not old-- gus and call were about your age and they were sexy as hell i personally prefer old gents to young ones everyday--i hope you have a good women to appreciate you
