  • Eternal gratitude to Saint Patricks battalion that fought against an imperialist-land hungry army. For those stupid gringos, please read a little bit more!! It is a justification to attack and invade another country because the lack of population? Mexico owned Arizon, California, Texas, Nuevo Mexico, Utah and Nevada after the independence war! Viva MEXICO!!! VIVA IRLANDA!!!

  • Such a beautiful and deep song. We (Hispanics) appreciate when people notice when their country is doing something wrong and unconstitutional. We appreciate all of those Irish, German, Scottish, Swiss, (etc) men who helped on the Mexican side during times of great despair.

    Thank you all! :)

  • @arturomaltos It is hard to say if what John wrote was what he saw or what he heard. Seeing as how he was recruited to join the Mexican Army I think he was told by the person who recruited him about what he wrote in his memories.

  • everyone is in the end, motivated by material gain. no one has any truly unselfish motives.

  • @agricola The reason they decided to desert the American Army and fight for the Mexicans had nothing to do with material gain. It had everything to do with the fact that they were Catholic and the leaders of the Catholic Church in Mexico told them to fight for Mexico.

  • Wow! Had no idea. Bitter sweet story. Loved it. Thank you.

  • I know we like to romanticize historical facts, but it would seem to me that the promise of land and higher wages were the primary incentives for the Irish deserters. I understand why Mexico honors these warriors, but I fail to see how my fellow Irishmen can see them as martyrs.

  • @1969luap They were martyrs for freedom. The USA was invading Mexico to steal its land. Similar to England invading Ireland to steal its land.

  • @blunt1984 The reason for the Meican American War was that the USA wanted Canada and was willing to fight England for it. England wanted to keep Canada, but they were not willing to go to war with the USA to keep it. The English knew that the Texas US border was in dispute and if war was to break out between the USA and Mexico the USA would forget about taking Canada for several years.

  • @blunt1984 You have no concept of truth or freedom if you think the USA was invading Mexico to "steal" land. The reason for this is that the land that Mexico called theirs belonged to the Utes, Navajo, Apache, and other tribes who the Mexicans bought as slaves to be worked to death unless they converted to Catholicsm.

People are people regardless of their race and good and bad can be found in all races.

  • @kraigthorne So the USA invaded Mexico to liberate the American Indian tribes in northern Mexico?-LMAO

You are dreaming. The goal of President James K. Polk was American territorial expansion to the Pacific coast. Ever heard of the term "Manifest Destiny"?

  • @blunt1984 I think you need to learn how to read.

There is no doubt that the USA not only wanted what is now the lower 48, in the 1840's the USA wanted ALL of North America. This being said, Mexico had NO real clame on Utah, Nevada, or Arizona, because only Native Americans lived in those states at the time (in any real number).

  • @kraigthorne If Mexico had "NO real claim" on these areas, why did the U.S. government PAY Mexico $18,250,000 ($461,725,000 today) — and agree to assume $3.25-million ($82,225,000 today) in debts that the Mexican government owed to U.S. citizens after the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo?

If Mexico had no real claim, why didn't the U.S. just say, "Well, the land was never yours anyway, so we're not paying you anything for it."?

  • @blunt1984 That is a good question. In my eyes they had no real clame. I think it had more to do with the fact the Americans felt guilty about the war and the money was a way of paying pentance.

I think the best way to understand the people at the time is to watch John Adams, because the people in the early 1800's thought more like the people of the 1840's than the way Americans think today.

  • @kraigthorne LoL-I actually own a copy of HBO's John Adams miniseries on DVD. It does shed a lot of light on early years of the United States. It's also probably the best acting job in Paul Giamatti's career so far.

  • @blunt1984 similar to everyone stealing the Indians land.

  • @bubridge Exactly. I actually support the goals of the AIM (American Indian Movement) as well.

  • @1969luap Obviously,as an American you find it difficult to accept the injustices committed by this country. To claim that they switched sides for material gain is a slap in the face of Irish spirit and dignity. The Irish were discriminated against, humilliated and basically conscripted right off the boat from Ireland by the US Army. Whether you choose to believe it or not does not change historical facts. A martyr is someone who is willing to die for a principle or a belief - marty'rs they are!

  • @uzarate traitors is a better word for it than martyrs.

  • @uzarate the irish are as perfidious as any other race, they stole and raped and murdered when it suited them. to insinuate that somehow the irish have more of a sense of honor than anyone else is loudicris.

  • @agricola I don't see anywhere in my comments where I state that the "Irish have more of a sense of honor than anyone else". You obviously have something against the Irish which has nothing whatsoever to do with the St. Patrick's batallion so just go vent that somewhere else. Let those of us who appreciate their valor in an unjust and imperialist war continue to honor them. By the way, the correct spelling is ludicrous.

  • @uzarate Not a SINGLE Irish man was conscripted in the Mexican American War (the Civil War they were conscripted and if they had not been conscripted in the Civil War Abraham Lincoln would have not been reelected). In the Mexican American War there were more Americans who wanted to join the Army than the Army had room for.

  • @kraigthorne You have an amazing ability to make up "facts" to support your arguments. You continue to believe in your myths and the rest of us will continue to honor the San Patricios.

  • @uzarate Seeing as how you do not dispute a single fact of mine with a fact of your own I have no reason to take what you say with anything but laughter.

I do find it quite sick that you honor the very people who caused such pain and suffering to millions of Irish because of their example.

  • @1969luap Would that then be true for the American government that went to war with Mexico for land?

  • @1969luap The United States army treating the Irish Catholics very poorly and for the fact that the Mexicans were mostly Catholics also played a role in these Irishmen deserting the United States army

  • @1969luap They were not the primary incentives. The harsh discrimination they suffered in their own army because they were Catholics was one of the primary reasons. That the US was invading a predominately Catholic nation and committing atrocities, particularly the burning of churches, raping of the nuns, and murder of priests was another reason. They knew it was an illegal war for the sole purpose of expanding territory and slavery. Wages and land were not as big of reasons as you think.

  • @1969luap My great grand father's grand father was an Irishman who fought for Mexico. It's a family story as to why he did it. I've spoken to my grandma for hours about it. The United States hated Irish Catholics. It's why the Irish respect Mexicans. The Irish were the Mexicans of their day. Back then THEY were the ones who were supposedly stealing American jobs, like Mexicans today.

  • I always thought my Irish/ Mexican-ness was a strange mix. I wonder if this involvement has any relation to my family's origins.

  • John Riley dijo ¨yo peleo del lado justo , y aunque la batalla este perdida¨

  • Just think if it were not for the treasonus act of the "Batallón de San Patricio" the USA would have been a welcoming haven for the Irish in the last part of the 1800's as it was in the first part of the 1800's. Remeber Andrew Jackson (the guy on the 20) was pure Irish.

  • @kraigthorne: The main grudge`s against the Irish in the mid to late 1800s was that they were Catholics, they arrived in mass numbers, and a little bit of WASP racism against them as an inferior race..

Both Andrew Jackson`s parents were from Ireland, yes, but they were Ulster Presbyterians, of Scottish ancestry

  • @risteardsean I would say you have a point except for the fact that the Irish spoke english (for the more part) and not speaking english was the main thing Americans held against imigrants. Also the Catholics from France, Poland, and Italy were not treated half as bad as the Irish were.

I am not saying that what the "Batallón de San Patricio" did in any way at all justifies how the Irish were treated, because it does NOT!

  • @kraigthorne Oh yeah, typical American revisionism of history to deny injustice even when it's clearly irrefutable. The generally negative perception of the Irish never varied until the early part of the 20th century and only slowly. The San Patricios turned coats precisely because of the ill treatment they received before they even got off the boat. If they had felt welcomed why would they have been willing to die for a country they knew nothing about after traveling so far to reach the US??

  • @uzarate The main reason they turned was the fact that they were ALL Catholic and they were talked into fighting for Mexico by leaders of the Catholic Church in Mexico. When a person has the choice of fighting for a country they are a new member of or fighting for their God. It is understandable what they did. In the light of history it was the WRONG thing to do.

  • @kraigthorne Hmmmmm...Utah state and a subscriber to Rush Limbaugh...that explains it! Right wing, conservative and thus ULTRA patriotic, thus unable to even consider the possibility that your country's history is full of injustices and treachery right? Well sorry, do some real historical research and you'll discover that this country consistently violated its ideals in the name of Manifest Destiny and continues to do so today to protect its "vital interests."

  • @uzarate WOW! It is not a good thing to make snap judgements about people. I have learnd that just because a person does not agree with you it does not mean they are stupid.

There is not a single country in the world that has not done bad things, but there is no country in the history of the world that has done more good than the USA.

  • Fuck those "american's" pinches gringos... are the fewer people who belong to this continent, and are called americans...

VIVA MEXICO Y VIVAN LOS SAN PATRICIOS CABRONES!!

  • @CHIVASBOY123 Why are you a racist?

  • @kraigthorne If those rednecks are.. why we shouldnt??. pinches gringos me cagan la madre

  • @CHIVASBOY123 Is a person more racist if they are afraid of a person of a different race or if they think they are smarter than a person of a different race and believe that without their help the other race can never make it?

  • @kraigthorne Shut the fuck up.. you dont know what are you talking about... you dont even know what i think... .. dont try to defend a country who is more racist than the NAZIS....

i just cant wait to the day when North America rot in hell...

  • @CHIVASBOY123 Thanks for the good laugh. It has been a long time sense I have laughed so hard at a silly post. Thanks again

  • @kraigthorne ure welcome... :) .l.

  • Ive seen two High class Americans get beat to a bloody pulp by two Irish guys in Boston, because the two Americans were talking badly about Mexican people, I hadnt a clue why it was happening, until one of the guys told me about the San Patricios! - it was pretty cool

  • One question why do the Irish don't like the French..?

  • @T3kozRockz the irish have good relations with the French, who told you they didn;t like the french

  • @T3kozRockz

World Cup qualifiers, Thierry Henri prevented Ireland from entering due to a hand a ball that allowed France to win. Honestly, we'd have been anhilated in our first game of the World Cup, but at least we'd have made it in. Its a pride thing.

Other then that we get on well with the French, they used to help us during our revolutions. None of them worked liked, but its the thought that counts.

  • @Todyo1798 ohhhh now i get it, yeah i remember that game, so now i get why the Irish tell the Mexicans, thanks for kickin the french out. = )

  • @T3kozRockz :Look up1798 .Killala bay Co Mayo Ireland.Gen. Humbert.Plus the French Cavaly in 1690 at the battle of the Boyne. The Irish happen to like the French a lot.Except that cheating bastard Thierry Herni!:)

  • To say Ireland is great would be an understatement. Ireland is wonderful in every aspect. I love Ireland and the Irish. I have been there many times and I must say I feel at home every single time I'm there. Irish pubs are still the best. We Mexicans are very thankful to the Irish for sticking with us during those times of hardship and struggles...For that, we kicked the French's ass out of the World Cup in S.A.!

Ireland and Mexico, brothers at heart!

  • I'm so proud to be Irish .. I'm also greatfull that Mexico honours our boys .. To the brave, the courageous, the strong and the dead

  • @christophergowing haha yeah. I've always liked Mexicans so it makes me proud knowing Irish people helped them fight the US.

  • Even tho they were out numbered and Out Guned They still fought for what they belived in.Which is Freedom And they stood by it like heros.

  • @papadoc711 Hi,those Irish are not well known by all mexicans but for the ones that know their battle for Mexico Riley and his Irish boys are considered HEROES that fought for a cause that wasn´t their war but they followed their concience and for me that is HONOR and COURAGE, they´re honored every year here in Mexico,we have a big debt to those heroes, since then any Irish is welcome in Mexico and I feel a strong magnetism with your people,God bless you Irish.

  • @xhonavsky @xhonavsky yea i only new about it myself when my father told me the story,I couldn't belive the bravery of the irish that day they stood by the people who where just defending their country from tyrants,Viva Mexico Chara

  • Lovely sad song. Love Irish people. much respect and love from Mexico USA.

  • God bless the Irishmen who fought for the catholic Mexico. Moreover, there were also germans, frenchmen, poles and swisses who also fought on the Mexican side.

The truth behind all this, is that the USA was (and it is still) ruled by freemasons and jews. They wanted to avoid to have a strong catholic empire as neighbor, therefore they attacked Mexico, so that the USA will have in the future the free path to declare war to any country which opposes jewish domination THIS IS THE ABSOLUTE TRUTH

  • Interesting in that John Riley of the song was acquitted of treason because he deserted before the war started. Also despite his commitment to Mexico he married a German woman and settled in the US. He lived in Northern Texas until his death in 1879, he was however buried in Mexico.

  • @freebeerfordworkers Just curious, where are you getting that from? Wikipedia has him dying at Veracruz in 1850 from alcohol poisoning...

  • @battleax86 God doesn't You Tube come back to haunt you! It was some time ago but at least you are not abusive. It may have been Wikipepia as the do update but it was certainly from the internet.

According to that source Riley escaped treason charges because he deserted before the war, stayed in Texas and married a German woman, died many years after the war and was buried in Mexico at either his or the Mexicans request.

  • @freebeerfordworkers He wasn't charged with treason because he wasn't a US citizen. He was, however, convicted of desertion and escaped the death penalty on that charge because, as you said, it had technically occurred in peacetime. Haven't been able to find anything on the claim he lived in North Texas (where I'm from, ironically) married to a German woman, but it would be unlikely, as it's standard American policy to deport foreigners convicted of crimes...especially one of Riley's magnitude.

  • @battleax86 Riley is a common Irish name so its possible there are two different men. Eminent historians have reached directly opposite conclusions when both missed an obscure document. OT but I know US immigration law is tight because this year a British guy who have lived and worked in Texas(?) for 10 years was stopped for a minor traffic violation. A computer showed his visa was 3 months out of date so he was jailed and put on the first flight back to Britain and out of the US for keeps.

  • @freebeerfordworkers Wow...it amazes me how the immigration service can bring the hammer down on someone from an allied country a little behind on his paperwork, but won't round up all the illegal Mexicans over here. I guess it might have been easier, since his name was already in the system.

As for Riley, his Mexican army records list him as "Juan Reley," which matches the Irishman who died in Veracruz in 1850. I suppose it could've been someone else...hell of a coincidence if it is, though.

  • @battleax86 . I would not argue but I doubt US controls in 1840's were that good. BTW in the UK we are much more liberal. 8 Muslims picked up by the US in Afghanistan claim they were roughed up in Guantanamo Bay. None are or have ever been UK citizens but they had the good fortune to live here on welfare for a few months. With the help of British lawyers they have sued the government for failing to protect their rights & beenoffered £1 million (1.5$) each to STFU. Whom the gods wish to destroy?

  • @freebeerfordworkers That's crazy. I've heard getting benefits in Britain is so easy that even Americans have gone to Britain requesting asylum so they can leech off the government. If I were Cameron, I would've told them all to get stuffed and go back to Afghanistan or wherever they were from.

Riley was branded in the face with a "D" for deserter. Even in the 1840s, it would've been hard for him to hide, especially since most of America was made of rural towns where everyone knew everyone.

  • I did read that most Irish soldiers stayed loyal to the US. When the Mexicans lost these Irish (also Catholics) were the most insistent that those who changed sides should be punished. Actual figures anyone?

On examination what passes for "history" - anyone's history - is 90% BS but our Irish "history" is the best. It registers 95%+ on the BS scale.

  • 90.000 Deserters during the Amer-Mexican so called war(Land Grab)When stepping of the boat in the US the Irish were told by pipe smoking assholes"Join the army and you will be a US citizen in 5 yrs, then the Nativists and Know Nothings made it 25 yrs!Think anyone would fight on them terms for those gutless chinless wonders?FO!

  • Wikipedias summary does not ignore the US aggression or the crimes committed by US volunteers. So their figure of 9200 US desertions should by reasonably accurate putting your 92k well into the 95%+ BS scale.

As to your FO, I understand this is the only possible response.

John Riley fought the US, had 50 of his men hanged by the US and escaped on legal grounds. He preferred to spend the rest of his life in the US rather than the country he fought for.

What else can you say to that but FO?

  • It's only now we can look objectively as what passed as our own history.. most young Irish who sought service in Armies might be seen as 'ecomonic conscripts'... used in a racist way by those major powers......a Bayonet thats a weapon with a working man at either end........

  • I am glad to know that there may be people who are capable of performing acts of such heroism and courage to defend a just cause and such noble ideals.

We are forced to sell and lose more than half of our territory with a valuable weapon in our heads at the price imposed by the invader.

As a Mexican I am pleased to give my sincere thanks and admiration to the courageous people of Ireland.

  • @octormetatron There was not one thing that was noble about what the "Batallón de San Patricio" did. Because of their treason millions if Irish were treated as trators in the USA for more than 60 years.

  • @kraigthorne: I think it was a noble act.. The Mexican-American war was a land grab against a weaker enemy.. Sadly many Irish today wouldnt do it.. Far too many are too concerned with their own selfish wants to do something that is right.. George Washington served in the British army, he was landed gentry, he benefited more than most from the British system at the the time, yet he lead a rebellion against Britain, was he a traitor?

  • @kraigthorne: I think it was a noble act.. The Mexican-American war was a land grab against a weaker enemy.. Sadly many Irish today wouldnt do it.. • The Mexican-American war, "one of the most unjust ever fought by a stronger against a weaker nation."

    Ulysses S. Grant

  • "The fact is the Mexicans attacked American troops in American territory. They brought the war on themselves. "

Really? Well, someone needs to stop the brainwash from their country's history books and learn the REAL facts. The americans were crossing the Rio Grande so the mexicans fired up. Even if they WEREN'T crossing the Grande, they were still in Mexican territorry, since the actual border was the Nueces River, not the Grande.

  • @battleax86 the treaty of velasco was not accepted by the goverment or recongnize becuse it was sign by a dictator so they claimed nueces river as the border and ur captian was rumored that he did crossed the border to get fired since USA wanted so much the territorie of mexico they wanted to provoke it and they used it as an excuse to invade the weak nation..... so i guess who has the last laugh wins lol

  • @456024545 It doesn't matter who the treaty was signed by. He was the legal head of state of Mexico at the time, so the treaty was valid. Not only that, but Mexico brought Santa Anna back to lead the Mexican army during the war, so it's not like they really hated him all that much...

  • Not really. People just wanted him in power, he stayed a few days/weeks and then appointed another guy (mostly Valentín Gómez Faríaz) while he rested in his farm.

  • @sidwerd1hater Only for a brief period in 1833, before Santa Anna forced him to flee to the US. Like him or not, Santa Anna was the legal head of state of Mexico when the Treaty of Velasco was signed, so the treaty was valid. It's not our fault the Mexicans allowed such a thoroughly incompetent man to lead their army.

  • "so the treaty was valid"

    Which of both?

  • History is written by the Victors. History is written full of lies.

  • What exactly did I say that was false?

  • Just read the saying, and remember the victor in the war.

  • Yes, I already know the saying and it's totally irrelevant right now. Nothing I said is false and not even the Mexicans (aside from idiots like sidwerd1hater) dispute anything I've said.

  • I love the United States because I'm American but as a result of my Mexican descent, I couldn't help but tear after hearing this song...Long live John Riley! In Chicago, I live in a tough nieghborhood, and fear nothing as long as my chum Danny D'wire is long side me on 38th street...Thank you Irland

  • Thank you very much for your kind words.

My mother's family is originally from Chicago, specifically in a neighborhood called Irondale on the Southeast Side.

  • Google:"Irelands Holocaust"To say the Irish died from lack of food is like saying the Jews died from lack of oxygen.Mucho Gracias for the post Mo Chara.Viva Mexico y Erin Go Bragh. All the best from your friends in Belfast.

Estaba parte de un militar de conquistadores con morales de solo matar. Y alli con los pobres Catolicos se murieron, ninos gritandos, la huelle del casas en fuegos.

  • Very good video.Thankyou for posting.

  • because of white supremacy the government doesnt want to put this in the textbooks just like how they say no one knows how all the aztecs and mayans disappeared. its so obvious why they disapeared the spaniards bruned their books and raped and burned them they dont say that..

  • I think more of the reason is because the US government doesn't want Americans to realize that its foreign policy has been imperialistic in both the past and present; and that there were Americans who were willing to fight and die to stand against it.

The government doesn't want this story known because they don't want it to inspire Americans to (for example) demand that they shut down all US military bases in foreign countries, and bring all of our troops home.

    (That's just my theory.)

  • The Aztecs and Maya did not disappear. I have had two ex gf's who are Aztec and Maya. The empire's were crushed by a combination of things, but the people are still very much alive.

  • i do believe we still are here us aztecs and mayas but the spanish still destroyed beautiful things they are the biggest hypocrites on earth
