  • What the fuck am I listening to..

  • @Paile10 Obviously u cant hear

  • Let's make this 3.000.000 Views!!!

  • look at all the white people

  • Came here from the fansub of MLP:FiM

  • YOU SMOKE MARIHUANA FOCKER?¿

  • @betocrazygreen hahahahaha are you a pothead focker?

  • You are right on. That's a keeper. Amen to that. An excellent journey into the imagination of a child. How could anyone dislike this?

  • Comment removed

  • is this song about drugs ??

  • @SuperNathan90 Nope, the top-rated comment pretty much nailed it.

  • this song is my youth incarnated

  • what a great upload

  • My mom used to sing this to me before I went to sleep everynight when I was little. I'm 14 now and, just rediscoved it. I still know all the words :)

  • @BeatleLennon97 I give you 2 years, than you will puff the real dragon

  • @BeatleLennon97 Same (: Though I'm 18 now.

  • this song is about their friendly magic dragon named Puff, duh

  • The irony is that when I was about five or four, I used to play this over and over again on my cassette player. I just loved the music, even though I had no idea what it was about. Now I'm 13, and I hadn't listened to it in years. And when I listened to it, I cried. Just cried and cried.

  • @fan1odw damn dude that is fucking depressing

  • @fan1odw Maybe you should puff the magic dragon...

  • @fan1odw The same exact thing happened to me. When I was little, I would listen to Peter, Paul and Mary every night before I went to sleep, and I absolutely adored this song.

I recently discovered to it, and actually *listened* to it, and understood it past the cute, sad story of just a boy and a dragon who went on wacky adventures that little me saw, and I couldn't stop crying.

And it makes me worry (silly as it is) that my Puff is dead, and I abandoned him just like Jackie Paper. :(

  • @fan1odw I've just had a massive weep myself after listening to it inoccently as a child. It's always been a favourite for forty years but I never put all the verses together until just now and realise it is a tragedy, about losing the imagination of a child who grows up and loses such a fantastic life made from nothing more than his mind and a few bits of paper, paint, sealing wax and string (what can you rhyme with bamboo?) which made the wings of his hobby horse type dragon.

  • Meet the Parents brought me here

  • Thumbs up if you love this song. (:

  • Good song for a sweet night with a magical dream ; )

  • 113 people have no soul

  • This song is about smoking crack.

    Puff: slang for inhaling smoke.

"Magic Dragon": slang for a joint.

  • @MrVeganbro

Okay except this is fifteen years before crack was invented. 1/10.

  • @trilobright Hard to explain my PoV on a maximum of 500 characters, but "crack" as a version of cocaine was invented in '77, so that's 11 years. Still, you have a point.

I was actually referring to the inhalation of euphoriant smoke. 2/10 ???

  • @MrVeganbro No, it is not. It's about "... a loss of innocence and having to face an adult world ... I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids." ~ Mary Travers

  • so beautiful ;)

  • Beautiful song

  • This song depressed the hell out of me as a kid. Poor Puff, being cast aside that way. As an adult, I feel the same.

  • forgot to comment in english.I am from Norway. top song that even my dog loves and listen to

  • topp sang som til og med hunden min lytter til

  • thats a great song!!

  • Actually, this song was written under the influence of the beautiful drug, LSD.

  • Why do people have to look into hidden meanings to songs!? Why can't people just accept the song at a surface level--A dragon having fun in Imaginationland and being happy! Geez people. :P lol

  • Mary scrubbing the invisible window

  • i 8 yrs old & at summer camp when i first heard this song. it was the last night & we were all sitting around the camp fire while this dude sang & played it on his gutar. i was in love with this lil girl & i started cryin because the song was so sad & i would never c my lil girlfriend or other friends i made again. & just for good measure, i peed the bed that night to. lol :)))

  • Wiki it. Sorry people, not about drugs.

"The authors of the song have repeatedly rejected this urban legend and have strongly and consistently denied that they intended any references to drug use. Peter Yarrow has frequently explained that "Puff" is about the hardships of growing older and has no relationship to drug-taking. He has also said of the song that it "never had any meaning other than the obvious one" and is about the "loss of innocence in children."

  • I was so weak when i read that people were crying after listening to this son.

  • The song is not about weed. But people will believe what they want.

  • Puff the Magic Dragon

    Walked on the strand

He looked down and then he saw

    Footprints in the sand

    A voice said, 'Mr. Dragon,

    Please don't be so sad.

    My name is Jenny Paper

And I was sent here by my dad.'

  • @ancarscein that would be a good ending to the song! :D

  • @ancarscein where can i find that version?

  • @ancarscein Fantastic lyrics, ive been waiting for puff to have a happy ending my whole life. Thanks.

  • @Ex0dus111 No problem. I did summer camp counseling and every night we sang to the kids(poorly in my case) and in one of the books I found that verse sitting at the end. I love the song as I am a big big fantasy geek. I have a stuffed Maleficent dragon on my bed behind me so dragons are a special love to me.

  • @ancarscein Excellent verse. And may Jenny's children be sent to Puff by their Mom, and may they in turn send theirs, ad infinitum. What a great song this is, about the way kids fantasize.

  • I cry every time i listen to.

  • THIS IS MUSIC

  • God, damn. That song almost brings me to tears.

  • its about a dragon named puff that lives by the sea. Whats the big deal

  • 0:58 Sign it with us!

    *awkward silence in the audience

    1:08 A little louderrr :(

    * shot of the audience just sitting....

  • @MyKuroo haha that was pretty funny.

  • i rember this movie when i was a liil kid to me this song brings back memories

  • @ 99hockey...your opinion is yours, but I will say this, my sister died today, I was there, and was lucky to say goodbye, and...this song, was all I could hear, when I got back from the hospital today, and so.."to each his own"..but I also think...that it is still good, no matter what you say.

  • @TheSkiBum84 My heart goe's out to you...sometimes there is a reason a song comes up maybe she was telling you she's alright...in a new world!

  • @TheSkiBum84 Cool my Man! Music is for each person to interpret and enjoy. And, we, use music to enhance and/or ease our feelings. That's it!

And, BTW! This is my generations music and we called it FOLK MUSIC!

It was from the roots of our culture and had evolved into something that had a meaning to certain people at one time or another.

And, Oh Yeah! in '66 you couldn't get a song published if you wrote about drugs, etc.

Often many of those FOLK SONGS did have double meanings for us.

  • This song is a work of art, and anyone who cant see that, well, then it is not their fault as they just cant see it. It does not matter, it is here for those who can appreciate a thing of beauty.

  • This song is about the loss of innocence when one grows older.

  • @autumnreign78 sure it is.

  • @autumnreign78 i thought it was about smoking pot....(PUFF,jackie PAPER) just seems kinda off

  • Now this is music. If Peter, Paul and Mary's music doesn't touch your soul, you have no soul to be touched.

  • "Sing it with us!" nobody sings.

    Epic song

  • the remix is mutch better

  • Music to play Skyrim to. (Also well-sung).

  • n 1961, Yarrow joined Paul Stookey and Mary Travers to form Peter, Paul and Mary. The group incorporated the song into their live performances before recording it in 1962; their 1962 recording of "Puff" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent two weeks atop the Billboard easy listening chart in early 1963.[4] It also reached number ten on Billboard's R&B chart.

  • In an effort to be gender-neutral, Yarrow now sings the line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys" as "A dragon lives forever, but not so girls and boys." The original poem also had a verse that did not make it into the song. In it, Puff found another child and played with him after returning. Neither Yarrow nor Lipton remember the verse in any detail, and the paper that was left in Yarrow's typewriter in 1958 has since been lost

  • Lipton was friends with Peter Yarrow's housemate when they were all students at Cornell. He used Yarrow's typewriter to get the poem out of his head. He then forgot about it until years later, when a friend called and told him Yarrow was looking for him, to give him credit for the lyrics. On making contact Yarrow gave Lipton half the songwriting credit, and he still gets royalties from the song.

  • The lyrics tell a story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff alone and depressed. The story of the song takes place "by the sea" in the fictional land of Honalee (the spelling used by author Lenny Lipton, though nonauthoritative variations abound).

  • The lyrics for "Puff, the Magic Dragon" were based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, a 19-year-old Cornell University student. Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon", about a "realio, trulio little pet dragon

  • ENC0:00RE!!

  • 108 BECOMES 109

  • THIS SONG IS FUCKING STUPID. DISLIKE

  • @calban17 I can understand you. Maybe you are a genius. You do not need learn more, i belive you have enough knowledge and tolerance for this world.

  • @dankabal thank u

  • Puff the Magic Dragon is the nickname for the AC-130 gunship

  • Maybe the song is about weed. Maybe it is about the Vietnam war. Maybe it is about growing up. What difference does it make? It's still a wonderful song. Me, I believe it is about weed. So what? Weed is nothing dangerous, it's just a plant. Let's respect each other and enjoy the MUSIC! 4:20...

  • mom my sang this song to my sister and I. I was 4 and my sister was 6. it made me sleep..

  • I think that it's actually about war, i mean if it's true that puff the magic dragon is a plane. The lyrics make sence when you think about it!

  • 彼得、保羅,馬利,好!

  • 真是一首好歌

  • if you think this is about a magic dragon and not smokeing some pot your dumb as hell lol love this old goodie thou

  • I was close to crying at the end, damn it.

  • 106 people have never puffed the magic dragon.

  • I wanna play this song on my guitar!

  • when I was in 2nd grade during nap time, my sister said they played this song. she is officially concerned.

  • It has to do with a plane flown over Vietnam called Puff the Magic Dragon

  • @limbwalker52

the chopper got it's nick name well after this song was written. It might have been named with this song in mind, but the song is not about Vietnam or a helacopter.

  • My point about this song is that it is a CHILDREN's - a musical fairy tail - it should not be the name for a very efficient killing machine. However it is now associated forever with the C-130 Gunship - too bad - no one had a similar urge to call the Huey gunship "Mini Puff" - the Huey had its own name like the C-130 was called a C-130.

  • So if this song is truly about drugs, when Jackie Paper comes no more and painted wings and giant string give way to other toys - has Jackie gone into rehab or moved on to bigger drugs?

  • @KCTKOC

    Song is not about drugs

It is really just a children’s song...irritates the crud out of me when folks who don't know what they are talking about insist that it is. Just shows that they are easily lead and ignorant.

  • @stepanova8 well you sir are wrong beacus a majority of things are about drugs are you telling me that alice in wonderland wasnt about drugs the point being while the whole thing wasnt focased on drugs there are remenits you lie in america get used to people seing drugs everywere

  • @chikoritaawsom Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul, and Mary, the guy who wrote the song, has said repeatedly that the song is not about drugs. So, either the song is not about drugs, or the guy who wrote the song has repeatedly lied about it. Songs about drugs were prevalent in the 1960s, so he would suffer no repercussions by writing about drugs. He was not running for office hoping to get the conservative vote, so why would he lie? No, the song is not about drugs..

  • @ChicagoSouthDan wow you are dimmwitted it matters not what is in the speakers mind but how others precive

  • Comment removed

  • @chikoritaawsom No, you are dimwitted. You have the option of adding your interpretation, but what the author or writer has to say matters.

  • @ChicagoSouthDan ok go make a speach about how illagel labor is destroying the contry without sounding racist go peacefully speak against religion without causing a problem why sure the writer can put thir idea out there but the reaction by the people is how you will be known now get a education and get off ur high horse

  • @stepanova8 they played this song in my catholic church in san jose calif...

  • @KCTKOC ROFL !

  • If you can really see and understand what this is song is truly about, you have my respect for not being stupid and thinking that this has anything at all to do with drugs.

  • @TheBigBloop1000 ... PUFF the MAGIC dragon had a friend named Jackie PAPER. He also FROLICKED in an autumn MIST and had GREEN scales. He plays along the CHERRY lane and when it stopped his GREEN scales felt like rain (water puts out the fire). It's a peaceful song to. ..Must I go on? I hate to break it to you but this song is drug-related.

  • @99hockeygurl19 It's actually about a kid losing his childhood. Puff was Jackie's imaginary friend, but Jackie grew up.

You can always argue with me that you're right and I'm wrong, but no one can know unless they're one of the writers of the song. (:

  • @99hockeygurl19 Dude, it's about the innocence of childhood that is lost when children grow up, something that ruins the world's innocence as a whole.

  • if not for puff, and dust-off, alot of us would not have came back alive !!!!!!! conflict my ass.

  • uhhh who relizes that uhh peter paul mary 1,2,3 britney spears creppy :OOOOO

  • Look at 2:12 seriously, and tell me this song isnt about weed.

  • @Radius1986 I don't understand how any part of this video, especially the part that you highlighted, has anything to do with weed. This song is about an immortal dragon and his human friend, plain and simple.

  • @diamondyang1 No silly person, it's about a middle aged person, like me watching his boys, of whom I have three, growing up. Always makes me cry.

  • @Radius1986 This song isn't about weed.

  • 1973 travelling with the family in an old station wagon during the winter in New England. I was the little one. I liked dragons. We all sang this song together...often. That is what this song means to me.

  • if i ever meet jackie paper i'm goin to kick his ass !!!

  • Too bad this songs title became the name of one of the Viet Nam conflicts war planes - the C-130 gunships

  • @kenimisoncanada One of the greatest war planes off all time. I thank God it sent thousands of VC and Islamic terrorists too their graves!

  • <3

  • i cry whenever i hear this song because it reminds me of my grandmother; she would always sing this. RIP :'-(

  • AC-130 = Puff the Magic Dragon

  • Love this song

  • First song I played on guitar, easiest to pick up on great song

  • (continued) iPod. Thank god some people actually know what real music is. Peace(/|\) and when I say that, I actually mean it, not just using it like everyone else does today.

  • So beautiful. I love them. I hate how today no one really understands how wonderful old music is. They think stuff like, Rihanna & Eminem & Justin Bieber is "real music." hello! Wake up and smell the roses of real wonderful music. It's sad. I hope they grow up and realize what they listened to now was worthless. This is real music. I get made fun of for loving music like, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Paul and Mary, the Beatles, Elton John...and so on. I'm 13, and I'd rather have a record player than an

  • sweetness overload

  • I used to cry over this song.

  • @XonWechtvt used to? I STILL do!

  • @FrozenFlames9 OK. I don't really cry over it any more. But I feel sad nevertheless.

  • Love to puff the dragon and listen to this song

  • My childcare teacher introduce this song to me. Back then i didn't understand it at all, now i do.

  • Goosebumps.

  • I used to hate this song because it was "childish" but now i love it! I love it because it is old, (1963), because it by Peter Paul and Mary! Because it is beautiful! I don't want to lower my manliness but this song made me cry! It is touching and depressing! Poor Puff! Also, because Peter and Paul are alive, but not so Mary. RIP Mary! I love you forever!

  • @IndianaParkWars You raised your manliness...........you got this song for what it is!

  • @IndianaParkWars as long as people like us listen and remember, she will live forever.

    sleep gently mary..

  • @IndianaParkWars You didn't lower your manliness.............Thanks for loving this song. Thanks for realizing that it's not about drugs.........but about children. I miss Puff also. I miss Mary more.

  • @debbiedamooseful Thanks!

  • @debbiedamooseful It is. "PUFF"(one takes puffs when blazing)the "MAGIC" dragon is friends with Jackie "PAPER"(papers are used to roll joints). He "FROLICKS" in "AUTUMN MIST"(Autumn makes one think leaves and smoke comes out when lit. That's the mist) in "HONAH LEE"(a non-existent land). They play on "CHERRY" lane (does one not light a cherry?).He had "GREEN SCALES" (self-explanatory) that "FELT LIKE RAIN" (water puts out the fire) because no-one was there. The song is peaceful.

  • @99hockeygurl19 What a load of crap! I met Peter Yarrow some years ago. He told me that the song wasn't drug related..........but he wouldn't stand in the way of you goofs that think so. It's a kid's song to him and me. You know what? A commercial for Puffs nose whipes, could mean the same thing! Heck, they're Puffs, they're paper, etc. Sorry, but I just don't buy your concept....I like mine better. P,P,&M are singing about a little boy growing up.

  • @99hockeygurl19 "And when he's tall he's what we call a "DINOSAUR SENSATION""

  • @99hockeygurl19 Honalee is ON A LEY (of a hill) , there's no other way to get a winged beast which is not a bird to fly, particularly one made from paper, string and sealing wax.

  • we had sung it sometime in the first class its amazing to remember ;/

  • How brilliant is this?! And I cried buckets in the last verse!

  • Awh, in the sad part I swear I can see the lead singer crying :( ...

  • the lead singer looks like he's been puffing the magic dragon a wee bit

  • I remember when I was a young kid, my dad would play this song on the guitar and sing it. It made me so happy and I loved it! As I got a bit older every time I heard it, it began to speak to me even more, and the message got through and I always started crying. I have not heard this song in about 7 years, and I cry even more. I am 13 years old.

  • Unreal what you can do simply and well with two guitars and three vocals. They were simply awesome.

  • Puff the magic & Drag on.

  • @tonipeerwout That couldn't have been more boring.

  • This is a great song but it seem like they are talking about the reefer...not hating though i see what its really about!!!

  • we need to find those 104 people that hit the dislike button and kill them

  • i'm 15, and this is golden, keep it real guys

  • I have missd this song I am 44 and it was my favorite as a child.

  • puff the "magic dragon"

  • if this song ever becomes the most popular song on youtube, i shall regain my faith in humanity.

  • @FJprophet Nobody cars about your faith in humanity. shove it.

  • @spilledinsanity and no one gives a shit about you hating on him

  • Love, Love, Love, Love.

Reminds me of my childhood. God, I'm only fourteen and I have no time for imagination anymore, or classics like this. Shows how much has changed. :(

  • Yeah I love to puff that "magic dragon"!

  • @thechronic4twenty OK, let's get over the drag on thing. Puff had nothing to do with that. How old are you?????? 12?

  • @thechronic4twenty Nooooo. It's about A Magic Dragon named "Puff" :)

  • @InformerMaz yeah. Puff Puff Pass.

  • This is a great song...it got me through a lot of hard times

  • I love you.

  • 2:38 Hey what are you doing down there??

  • I'm 14 and me and father sang this song all my young years.. :/ it makes me cry cause we don't sing it now :(..
