If I could have this song, and the Seekers' 'Morning Town ride', etc. on a continuous loop, I will enter slumber gleefully with no monsters under the bed.
They don't hide in that place anymore. I know that now.
The irony is that when I was about five or four, I used to play this over and over again on my cassette player. I just loved the music, even though I had no idea what it was about. Now I'm 13, and I hadn't listened to it in years. And when I listened to it, I cried. Just cried and cried.
@fan1odw The same exact thing happened to me. When I was little, I would listen to Peter, Paul and Mary every night before I went to sleep, and I absolutely adored this song.
I recently discovered to it, and actually *listened* to it, and understood it past the cute, sad story of just a boy and a dragon who went on wacky adventures that little me saw, and I couldn't stop crying.
And it makes me worry (silly as it is) that my Puff is dead, and I abandoned him just like Jackie Paper. :(
@fan1odw I've just had a massive weep myself after listening to it inoccently as a child. It's always been a favourite for forty years but I never put all the verses together until just now and realise it is a tragedy, about losing the imagination of a child who grows up and loses such a fantastic life made from nothing more than his mind and a few bits of paper, paint, sealing wax and string (what can you rhyme with bamboo?) which made the wings of his hobby horse type dragon.
@trilobright Hard to explain my PoV on a maximum of 500 characters, but "crack" as a version of cocaine was invented in '77, so that's 11 years. Still, you have a point.
I was actually referring to the inhalation of euphoriant smoke. 2/10 ???
@MrVeganbro No, it is not. It's about "... a loss of innocence and having to face an adult world ... I find the fact that people interpret it as a drug song annoying. It would be insidious to propagandize about drugs in a song for little kids." ~ Mary Travers
Why do people have to look into hidden meanings to songs!? Why can't people just accept the song at a surface level--A dragon having fun in Imaginationland and being happy! Geez people. :P lol
i 8 yrs old & at summer camp when i first heard this song. it was the last night & we were all sitting around the camp fire while this dude sang & played it on his gutar. i was in love with this lil girl & i started cryin because the song was so sad & i would never c my lil girlfriend or other friends i made again. & just for good measure, i peed the bed that night to. lol :)))
"The authors of the song have repeatedly rejected this urban legend and have strongly and consistently denied that they intended any references to drug use. Peter Yarrow has frequently explained that "Puff" is about the hardships of growing older and has no relationship to drug-taking. He has also said of the song that it "never had any meaning other than the obvious one" and is about the "loss of innocence in children."
@Ex0dus111 No problem. I did summer camp counseling and every night we sang to the kids(poorly in my case) and in one of the books I found that verse sitting at the end. I love the song as I am a big big fantasy geek. I have a stuffed Maleficent dragon on my bed behind me so dragons are a special love to me.
@ancarscein Excellent verse. And may Jenny's children be sent to Puff by their Mom, and may they in turn send theirs, ad infinitum. What a great song this is, about the way kids fantasize.
Wow -- Mary Travers is the freak'in "mom" mtRNA|DNA to Gisel Bündchen, among the recent decade's mega-top-dollar-paid fashions models ever...whereas, many contemporaneous critics et al narrow thinkers, discounted Mary's "strong looks" as, at best, a cruder version of the "Julie Christie school of peroxide-locks"; whereas, in retrospect--at least for newer generations--review of the ubber-graphical stagings, w/high-key lighting, proves my salient point. Not my type, but lookers all the same!
@ 99hockey...your opinion is yours, but I will say this, my sister died today, I was there, and was lucky to say goodbye, and...this song, was all I could hear, when I got back from the hospital today, and so.."to each his own"..but I also think...that it is still good, no matter what you say.
This song is a work of art, and anyone who cant see that, well, then it is not their fault as they just cant see it. It does not matter, it is here for those who can appreciate a thing of beauty.
n 1961, Yarrow joined Paul Stookey and Mary Travers to form Peter, Paul and Mary. The group incorporated the song into their live performances before recording it in 1962; their 1962 recording of "Puff" reached number two on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and spent two weeks atop the Billboard easy listening chart in early 1963.[4] It also reached number ten on Billboard's R&B chart.
In an effort to be gender-neutral, Yarrow now sings the line "A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys" as "A dragon lives forever, but not so girls and boys." The original poem also had a verse that did not make it into the song. In it, Puff found another child and played with him after returning. Neither Yarrow nor Lipton remember the verse in any detail, and the paper that was left in Yarrow's typewriter in 1958 has since been lost
Lipton was friends with Peter Yarrow's housemate when they were all students at Cornell. He used Yarrow's typewriter to get the poem out of his head. He then forgot about it until years later, when a friend called and told him Yarrow was looking for him, to give him credit for the lyrics. On making contact Yarrow gave Lipton half the songwriting credit, and he still gets royalties from the song.
The lyrics tell a story of the ageless dragon Puff and his playmate Jackie Paper, a little boy who grows up and loses interest in the imaginary adventures of childhood and leaves Puff alone and depressed. The story of the song takes place "by the sea" in the fictional land of Honalee (the spelling used by author Lenny Lipton, though nonauthoritative variations abound).
The lyrics for "Puff, the Magic Dragon" were based on a 1959 poem by Leonard Lipton, a 19-year-old Cornell University student. Lipton was inspired by an Ogden Nash poem titled "Custard the Dragon", about a "realio, trulio little pet dragon
Maybe the song is about weed. Maybe it is about the Vietnam war. Maybe it is about growing up. What difference does it make? It's still a wonderful song. Me, I believe it is about weed. So what? Weed is nothing dangerous, it's just a plant. Let's respect each other and enjoy the MUSIC! 4:20...
the chopper got it's nick name well after this song was written. It might have been named with this song in mind, but the song is not about Vietnam or a helacopter.
My point about this song is that it is a CHILDREN's - a musical fairy tail - it should not be the name for a very efficient killing machine. However it is now associated forever with the C-130 Gunship - too bad - no one had a similar urge to call the Huey gunship "Mini Puff" - the Huey had its own name like the C-130 was called a C-130.
So if this song is truly about drugs, when Jackie Paper comes no more and painted wings and giant string give way to other toys - has Jackie gone into rehab or moved on to bigger drugs?
It is really just a children’s song...irritates the crud out of me when folks who don't know what they are talking about insist that it is. Just shows that they are easily lead and ignorant.
@stepanova8 well you sir are wrong beacus a majority of things are about drugs are you telling me that alice in wonderland wasnt about drugs the point being while the whole thing wasnt focased on drugs there are remenits you lie in america get used to people seing drugs everywere
@chikoritaawsom Peter Yarrow, of Peter, Paul, and Mary, the guy who wrote the song, has said repeatedly that the song is not about drugs. So, either the song is not about drugs, or the guy who wrote the song has repeatedly lied about it. Songs about drugs were prevalent in the 1960s, so he would suffer no repercussions by writing about drugs. He was not running for office hoping to get the conservative vote, so why would he lie? No, the song is not about drugs..
@ChicagoSouthDan ok go make a speach about how illagel labor is destroying the contry without sounding racist go peacefully speak against religion without causing a problem why sure the writer can put thir idea out there but the reaction by the people is how you will be known now get a education and get off ur high horse
If you can really see and understand what this is song is truly about, you have my respect for not being stupid and thinking that this has anything at all to do with drugs.
@TheBigBloop1000 ... PUFF the MAGIC dragon had a friend named Jackie PAPER. He also FROLICKED in an autumn MIST and had GREEN scales. He plays along the CHERRY lane and when it stopped his GREEN scales felt like rain (water puts out the fire). It's a peaceful song to. ..Must I go on? I hate to break it to you but this song is drug-related.
@99hockeygurl19 Dude, it's about the innocence of childhood that is lost when children grow up, something that ruins the world's innocence as a whole.
This song is about children growing up, about how imagination can take you everywhere, how you live your childhood, the memories, the fun, and no matter what you thought you'd be friends with your friends for your entire life, but its just that time changes us all. We all grow up.
@Radius1986 I don't understand how any part of this video, especially the part that you highlighted, has anything to do with weed. This song is about an immortal dragon and his human friend, plain and simple.
1973 travelling with the family in an old station wagon during the winter in New England. I was the little one. I liked dragons. We all sang this song together...often. That is what this song means to me.
(continued) iPod. Thank god some people actually know what real music is. Peace(/|\) and when I say that, I actually mean it, not just using it like everyone else does today.
So beautiful. I love them. I hate how today no one really understands how wonderful old music is. They think stuff like, Rihanna & Eminem & Justin Bieber is "real music." hello! Wake up and smell the roses of real wonderful music. It's sad. I hope they grow up and realize what they listened to now was worthless. This is real music. I get made fun of for loving music like, Jimi Hendrix, Peter Paul and Mary, the Beatles, Elton John...and so on. I'm 13, and I'd rather have a record player than an
I used to hate this song because it was "childish" but now i love it! I love it because it is old, (1963), because it by Peter Paul and Mary! Because it is beautiful! I don't want to lower my manliness but this song made me cry! It is touching and depressing! Poor Puff! Also, because Peter and Paul are alive, but not so Mary. RIP Mary! I love you forever!
@IndianaParkWars You didn't lower your manliness.............Thanks for loving this song. Thanks for realizing that it's not about drugs.........but about children. I miss Puff also. I miss Mary more.
@debbiedamooseful It is. "PUFF"(one takes puffs when blazing)the "MAGIC" dragon is friends with Jackie "PAPER"(papers are used to roll joints). He "FROLICKS" in "AUTUMN MIST"(Autumn makes one think leaves and smoke comes out when lit. That's the mist) in "HONAH LEE"(a non-existent land). They play on "CHERRY" lane (does one not light a cherry?).He had "GREEN SCALES" (self-explanatory) that "FELT LIKE RAIN" (water puts out the fire) because no-one was there. The song is peaceful.
@99hockeygurl19 What a load of crap! I met Peter Yarrow some years ago. He told me that the song wasn't drug related..........but he wouldn't stand in the way of you goofs that think so. It's a kid's song to him and me. You know what? A commercial for Puffs nose whipes, could mean the same thing! Heck, they're Puffs, they're paper, etc. Sorry, but I just don't buy your concept....I like mine better. P,P,&M are singing about a little boy growing up.
@99hockeygurl19 Honalee is ON A LEY (of a hill) , there's no other way to get a winged beast which is not a bird to fly, particularly one made from paper, string and sealing wax.
I remember when I was a young kid, my dad would play this song on the guitar and sing it. It made me so happy and I loved it! As I got a bit older every time I heard it, it began to speak to me even more, and the message got through and I always started crying. I have not heard this song in about 7 years, and I cry even more. I am 13 years old.

And, BTW! This is my generations music and we called it FOLK MUSIC!
It was from the roots of our culture and had evolved into something that had a meaning to certain people at one time or another.
And, Oh Yeah! in '66 you couldn't get a song published if you wrote about drugs, etc.
Often many of those FOLK SONGS did have double meanings for us.

If you can really see and understand what this is song is truly about, you have my respect for not being stupid and thinking that this has anything at all to do with drugs.
TheBigBloop1000 1 month ago 18
@TheBigBloop1000 ... PUFF the MAGIC dragon had a friend named Jackie PAPER. He also FROLICKED in an autumn MIST and had GREEN scales. He plays along the CHERRY lane and when it stopped his GREEN scales felt like rain (water puts out the fire). It's a peaceful song to. ..Must I go on? I hate to break it to you but this song is drug-related.
99hockeygurl19 3 weeks ago
@99hockeygurl19 It's actually about a kid losing his childhood. Puff was Jackie's imaginary friend, but Jackie grew up.
You can always argue with me that you're right and I'm wrong, but no one can know unless they're one of the writers of the song. (:
RozsaKietse 3 weeks ago
@99hockeygurl19 Dude, it's about the innocence of childhood that is lost when children grow up, something that ruins the world's innocence as a whole.

if not for puff, and dust-off, alot of us would not have came back alive !!!!!!! conflict my ass.

99hockeygurl19 3 weeks ago
@99hockeygurl19 What a load of crap! I met Peter Yarrow some years ago. He told me that the song wasn't drug related..........but he wouldn't stand in the way of you goofs that think so. It's a kid's song to him and me. You know what? A commercial for Puffs nose whipes, could mean the same thing! Heck, they're Puffs, they're paper, etc. Sorry, but I just don't buy your concept....I like mine better. P,P,&M are singing about a little boy growing up.
