yes! This is sooo the right way to be motioning your body when running. I've observed famous ultra-runner Eric Clifton (won Badwater Ultramarathon, 1999), and he moves his body the exact same way!
well his form isn't perfect but alright. His left arm moves to the front of his body taking energy away from and also means less power in his back swing making his stride slower. His back stride is too large forcing him to use more energy to bring it forward and therefore slowing him down especially in sprints.
Thanks for the video.. I will make sure to pass it on with my friends at mapmyrun.com. That is a very awesome site. I am leaving for my run now, hopefully I will increase my speed and lessen my pain in the way you showed. I have just began running this year, I am running a 10k in 2 weeks. I will let you know if it helps lol.. Hopefully I can copy what you showed.
Really helpful guide to proper running technique. The slow motion shot of the gait is really informative, especially the note at the end about bending at the ankle and not the waist. Thank you for this!
what is a good training exerecise to improve foot placement? i keep landing on my heel and i know its wrong so i keep trying to correct it but it is harder to do than i thought it would be.
don't bounce so much. focus on out, not up. up is wasted energy. bring thighs out. left recovery leg up and then forward as a lever and then "unroll shin". this probably makes sense to no one. buy the book Explosive running
1 mile in 4 mins and some change? thats ridiculous...I tried to run a 2 mile yesterday after not running for 6 years and persistant smoking for 10. Im 22 btw. 1/4mile I threw up, half mile threw up and on 1mile and 1/4...I threw up AGAIN and wanted to go to sleep. Just lights out right there in the middle of the road. Head was dizzy every thing in my abdomen and chest was stinging like crazy...I perservered though and walked the next 1/4 mile and ran the last 1/4...which nearly killed me. 12mins
You should throw away those clunky running shoes. Since you have decent technique, all those thickly padded running shoes are doing is interfering with proper foot placement, and slowing you down.
Thanks for the tutorial, I'm just getting into jogging after years of going to the gym. Outdoors seems more humbling. I do have a question, since learning about the proper feet placement (used to run as warm up, lift weights, then swim) do you have a certain shoe brand and style as your preference? Would be great to know. Thanks!
Also, do you still pronate as a mid-foot striker? Do your shoes allow for that? Plus, what shoes ARE those? Really curious. I've read about the NB shoes for Chi running, Vibram 5Fingers, and so I'm curious...I definitely want to get rid of my "running" shoes as the heel cushion prevents me from mid-foot or forefoot striking (unless of course I point my toes but that isn't good for me either as I understand).
So I've heard that forefoot landing is the way to go and that sprinters actually never even bring their heel down, but now I'm watching this mid-foot strike and I thought that it was slightly worse than the forefoot (tho still better than heel-strike). Anyway, this is because my impression was that the energy is released partly as rotational when the front lands but the heel is still coming down. Even though shoes reduce the impact doesn't mid-striking still produce a (slight) transient force?
pretty good form, coming from a track coach and marathoner. only critique is that that his hips are too far back in this 1st example...on longer distances this could lead to low back issues...
This is great because i have the hardest time relaxing my upper body. My shoulders tend to tense up. I can't have my arms that low when I'm on the treadmill but I'll be sure to try these techniques outside. Any tips on transitioning from treadmill to outside?
@Ariadnike Well, his arms (right one, mostly) are actually a little too low. The arms should not be bent to greater than 90 degrees, lest there should be unnecessary inefficiencies. Notice how his elbows pull to the side as he moves, with insufficient shoulder rotation. This means he is not flexible enough in the shoulders. The elbows should pull back, not to the side. At 2:26 you can see that his hand crosses the midline.
I need to start doing this: the midfoot land. So can anyone attest to going faster as a result of this as opposed to heel strike? I know its the correct form.
@GetBackJack123 Yes, I can. The biggest improvement I've noticed is a reduced contact time with the ground, coupled with a stronger force on pushoff. The stronger force gives greater speed.
To jump you use your quads and your hamstrings by straightening your legs.
To decrease the amount of bounce, don't try to push down with your quads, don't straighten your legs, always keep legs angled and never push off the ground (unless your running up hills of course)
To do this, relax your legs from the quads down. Also, you have to use only your upper- leg muscles (upper thigh & gluteus maximus) to pull your legs forward.
A good one. I usually keep my hand high up and raise all the way to my shoulders and swing it. Hence by upper body is always tight and never relaxed. My back was always tight and had stiffness on the upper back. Will try the swing of arms below the chest and maintain in the mid sec level and see how well I can relax. I learned to relax by seeing the video. Thanks for posting this guys.
As I step forward I kick to get a full stretch on my hamstring thus giving me a longer stride, my elbows are kept closer to my mid section with the palms of my hands facing inward to reduce drag. I don't know if this is the best form, it works for me : )
Yes, these guys are on the right path, but would benefit from staying more compact, having less pushoff to the read, and less bounce up. Instead they should be pulling the feet up.
What's the name of that song that used to be in this video...with the sort of slow violin in the background. first heard it in this video and forgot the name, but now i can't hear the lyrics so i can't look up the song...could you tell me the name of it?

I like to run a lot, especially longer distaces and, but when i am running those shorter distances i got the same frequece as in those long races...! Its hard to change i think :P I`m not really fast eather...!
In austria we have a boy from sweden he is record holder under 15 in 1500mt ant 800 mt you can check him up hes called johan rogestedt and he does 800 1,56 min and 400 51.69 hes 14 years old
HE"S A MONSTER THE NEXT WARRINER !!! CHECK HIM OUT I SWEAR
here in mexico we have a kid of 15 and he run the 400m in 49.12 seconds (not he best time) but you are a GREAT to :D and you have JEREMY WARINER THE BEST OF ALL TIME (HE CAN)
OK I need to run a mile & a half in 10.30, but am currently doing it in around 11.30 (crap I know),so what would be the best kind of running I could do to improve as much as possible in just two weeks?
Wow thats clever, you stay up all night thinking of that? I wonder what time you'd get for a mile & half genius. Considering I only started running three weeks ago I think I'm doin well, so unless you can think of something either helpful or funny, do yourself a favour & stop embarassing yourself. Twat.
Squats, doing 10 reps for five sets with one minute rest in between will strengthen all the muscles involved in running. If you have been doing squats then try sprinting in intervals while running your normal amount. Keep pushing. I hope you succeed
11.30 isn't a bad time eh! i used to run that in 22minutes but i did that run yesterday and i did it in 9.30. All i did was spend a lot of time in a gym/playing sports with my buddies(not in a league). I hope this helps you a little, this is how i improved. When i started (about 3 weeks ago) i would start at 5mi/hr 2minutes later i'd beef it to 6.5mi/hr then 5minutes after that i would set it to 7.5mi/hr for the next 8minutes to make a total of 15minutes. and thats all.
sure, I've heard methods where you count the breathing in relation to about 2-3 strides you take but I don't like that because one's stride can change rates and also if you breathe naturally, this pattern will occur on its own. What I try to focus on is staying completely relaxed in my chest and focusing on the exhale, that way you can completely empty your lungs and fill them with more oxygen. Use your full lung capacity by breathing "from your stomach" and exhaling forcefully but relaxed.
Colin has a fairly pronounced reach for a high level runner, notice his knee position being back and behind on his swing leg, relative to his other leg when it strikes the ground. His foot position when it strikes the ground is also in front of his center of gravity, which is due to his reaching, or over striding. This can be corrected by focusing on pulling the back foot off the ground more quickly, and simple POSE drills. Brad by comparison has a more "pure" stride.
Excellent video and so what if it is rather-uh-gay. The shirtless guy and California Girls playing in the background was perhaps just a heterosexual attempt at humor. I laughed. Wait, no, it is gay. Next time, lose the shorts and play the Village People. Gay people rule!
Thanks guys, I know you guys like running and wanted everyone else to enjoy it also. I am going in to the Marine Corp and wanted some tips to help improve on my timed runs. I appreciate your help.
I just wanted to take a minute to thank you for such an excellent training video to show my 10 year old son proper technique for increasing his speed. This video is wonderfully made and very informative. As a football player's dad, it's always better shown than told and you guys really have helped me to SHOW him how to do it. I also wanted to comment on the video at the 5:32 mark, HILARIOUS!!!
well they are 50.5 and 1:55.7 now. I made this movie before my senior year in track, so those are considered pretty fast, more so the 8 than the 4 but I'm a distance guy not a sprinter. And how does being from Califronia inhibit your ability to judge whether a 4 or 8 time is fast?
good video, your hands drop too low when they swing, they should stay pretty level, mostly above your hips, you're wasting energy when you do that when you have to pull them back up from dropping so low, your hands are pointing at the ground every stride, just something to consider. and whoever the doochebag who posted "fuckin fag" did you forget what your screename was, dudevalentine? what the fuck, ur the fag
I appreciate the constructive criticism and I noticed the low hands as well and now it is fixed, continue quality comments for you serve not only the youtube community, but all of mankind

cmxix 2 years ago
not totally true. If you can productively use the jump to push you forward its a good thing. good luck with your sprinting
dls2779 2 years ago
@cmxix
You "jump" when you push off the ground.
To jump you use your quads and your hamstrings by straightening your legs.
To decrease the amount of bounce, don't try to push down with your quads, don't straighten your legs, always keep legs angled and never push off the ground (unless your running up hills of course)
To do this, relax your legs from the quads down. Also, you have to use only your upper- leg muscles (upper thigh & gluteus maximus) to pull your legs forward.
mark95427 1 year ago
@cmxix Quicker cadence will help with that. Try for around 180 steps/minute.

I hope to see fellow runners much more supportive than on this board. We are all runners trying to improve. BE NICE! With a healthy competitive spirit.
P.S you rule, not rool! Enjoy!

Thanks, haha and I know it's rule, not rool, I just like to say rool.

OK I need to run a mile & a half in 10.30, but am currently doing it in around 11.30 (crap I know),so what would be the best kind of running I could do to improve as much as possible in just two weeks?
TheOneNo20 3 years ago
STOP BEING FAT
bowense16 3 years ago
Wow thats clever, you stay up all night thinking of that? I wonder what time you'd get for a mile & half genius. Considering I only started running three weeks ago I think I'm doin well, so unless you can think of something either helpful or funny, do yourself a favour & stop embarassing yourself. Twat.

Squats, doing 10 reps for five sets with one minute rest in between will strengthen all the muscles involved in running. If you have been doing squats then try sprinting in intervals while running your normal amount. Keep pushing. I hope you succeed
guitarobsessed85 3 years ago
Cheers, thanks for the advice ;)

11.30 isn't a bad time eh! i used to run that in 22minutes but i did that run yesterday and i did it in 9.30. All i did was spend a lot of time in a gym/playing sports with my buddies(not in a league). I hope this helps you a little, this is how i improved. When i started (about 3 weeks ago) i would start at 5mi/hr 2minutes later i'd beef it to 6.5mi/hr then 5minutes after that i would set it to 7.5mi/hr for the next 8minutes to make a total of 15minutes. and thats all.
themuse1 3 years ago
i guess all it did was just really improve my aerobic(oxygenated) endurance so apparently its improved my time by a lot on the 1.5mi run :D Good luck

Thanks for reply ;)

sure, I've heard methods where you count the breathing in relation to about 2-3 strides you take but I don't like that because one's stride can change rates and also if you breathe naturally, this pattern will occur on its own.

Super. Thanks for asking.

Good overall basics. I learned a lot about the proper way to run.
Could've done without all the extra GAYness though.
NE0viking 3 years ago
Thanks, but your emphasis on the word gay by capitalizing it is far more homosexual than this short, insightful film.

Well im just curious because im from california and just wanted to know if your 4 and 8 time are considered fast.....
albhck 4 years ago
well they are 50.5 and 1:55.7 now. I made this movie before my senior year in track, so those are considered pretty fast, more so the 8 than the 4 but I'm a distance guy not a sprinter. And how does being from Califronia inhibit your ability to judge whether a 4 or 8 time is fast?
glassser 4 years ago
cause california times tend to be exceptionally fast which rings true for most of the west coast of the u.s.

good video, your hands drop too low when they swing, they should stay pretty level, mostly above your hips, you're wasting energy when you do that when you have to pull them back up from dropping so low, your hands are pointing at the ground every stride, just something to consider. and whoever the doochebag who posted "fuckin fag" did you forget what your screename was, dudevalentine? what the fuck, ur the fag
TheJackelx8 4 years ago
I appreciate the constructive criticism and I noticed the low hands as well and now it is fixed, continue quality comments for you serve not only the youtube community, but all of mankind
