It is an accepted loss for any Panzer commander to lose 40% of its tanks and vehicles BEFORE the battle starts. The odds are higher for heavy panzer battalions.

Someone commented on unbolting itself if hit. No, it's riveted...a dangerous thing! A glancing blow can knock the head off the rivet and not penetrate, but the remainder of the rivet then goes flying around inside the tank with not so good results. The main flaw Italian tanks of the period had was in the metallurgy of the armor. The armor was too hard making it break. I've seen pics of knocked out M11/13/14's and M75's taken in North Africa with huge broken chunks gone instead of just a hole.
