The reason why there are country music on the Billboard Hot 100 is that the Hot 100 is an ALL-GENRE chart. If anyone wants a chart without country, go watch the Pop or R&B/Hip-Hop charts ;)

@slickdikenzo Your analysis is correct, rock music has survived the decades since Elvis and The Beatles, although now it is more of the ballads and pop-rock \that chart high (Tonight Tonight, Good Life). You won't see Metallica or Korn anywhere in the Top 50 anymore...

As for R&B, my theory is that artists have ditched the soulful Motown sound in favour of pop: Usher and Chris Brown now make generic dance-pop (DJGUFIL, Yeah 3x) while Beyoncé and Rihanna make ballads (BTINH, CKB).

The reason why not as much made it in the Hot 100 was that the songs were never released as singles - consumers either hear them on the radio or buy the whole album. It's only the past several years when Carrie Underwood won Idol that the singles were released on iTunes, hence the higher chart positions.
