Hagfish gross me out like little else. My grandfather worked at the MBL in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and it was always my dream to follow in his footsteps. Then one day when I was about twelve one of the scientists showed me his tank of hagfish and had me hold a double handful of slime...kind of changed my mind then! The ocean's a scary place, mad respect to the strong-stomached scientists who study its weirdest inhabitants so I don't have to.
@snitch321 That liquid is most likely water. They live in salt water so it would be safe to assume. That could also mean that it mixes with the salt but a biologist would know more.
@bluzzzzzzzzzzy Not blood, it's a slime defense mechanism it produces to escape from predators. Think similar to what a slug produces, except it thickens water.
I guarantee you Andrew Zimmern drinks hagish slime out of a big gulp.

What happens if you eat a whole hagfish then?

@killette2 Slime would probably be made in your throat. You would probably suffocate. That's assuming you ate it while it is alive.
