@71GA Yes, of course it would. There's nothing special here. If your guitar has EMGs it will sound quite different, but if you use a modern rock tone with moderate gain, scooped mids, a goodly amount of treble and probably fairly conservative bass, and a humbucker equipped guitar, you will get as close to this as really matters. I see no point in trying to cop his tone; you will not succeed.

@71GA They aren't 'better'. They are different. If you want the EMG sound, you buy EMGs. The Duncan Blackouts are active too but they sound different to EMGs from what I've heard. I do prefer passive pickups but it's only personal preference.

I'm primarily a bass player, but if I were to ever pick up guitar seriously, I would want to play in the style that Petrucci portrays in this video. All of the licks and runs he plays here sound very inventive, unique, and in good creative taste. I would think the chords in the beginning were pre-determined, but I'm not sure about the rest; if from :45 and onwards is improvised, then I've gotta say, that's ridiculously incredible.

I would start with systematic chaos if you're more of a metalhead or Images and words if you like 90s sound.

I like Scenes from a memory but i feel that the scenes from new york versions are so much better than album versions, especially "Through her eyes" , i would get the DVD XD

this is typical Ibanez guitar sound, but I think you can do it with any electric guitar, you need an amplifier which has a pre-amp function or a pre-amp pedal connect to any speaker, increase "gain", decrease "presence" + adjust treble, mid and bass and your guitar tone knob and choose pick up, try around ... not difficult, just need time to sit down & try around with watever gadjet you have.
