@poonwheels NO!! Roosevelt began negotiations with the French (who had started to build it, but quit), and Colombian government in1880. Within Colombia there was a revolution, and a new government system was born for Colombia. Roosevelt reassumed negotiations with the NEW government, ending in the U.S. paying $40 Million for it.
Actually, the french quit bulding the canal in 1886' also the before the americans could go into panama the had to sign the Hay-Bunau varilla treaty with Panama not colombia...the "revolution" i think you are talking about is the thousand day civil war between the "conservadores and liberales" that was fought thru out colombia (at the moment panama was still part of it) panama got tired of been part of colombia and got its independence on Nov 3 1903 :D
Having cruised through it and then read of its history I'm certain this is the greatest feat of physical engineering of all time. Whatever the difficulties of constructing the GW of China, they didn't have to contend with yellow fever, landslides, year-long humidity, inadequate equipment and cutting a 9- mile channel through the Continental divide. Not convinced ? Check out my vids on this.

It's the biggest human undertaking in human history. To actually reshape the landscape of the planet Earth.

One of the two biggest.
It would take some reckoning to determine if it's a bigger undertaking than the great wall of China.
