Today's clubs do little more than recover mis-hits, and in someways they have caused new problems in control. I remember the days of persimmons woods and my Hogan Power Irons. Now I'm up to a Taylor Made titanium driver with a face so huge I can detect wind resistance, and bulk irons that cause fat hits and fanning. I hate these big cumbersome clubs that cost 7X the price of my old Hogans. The industry has gone overboard. I still go back to my old woods sometimes. I miss that feel and control.
It appears impossible to avoid the people who feel the need to comment about Tiger Woods on the Ben Hogan clips. It seems unfair to the Tiger enthusiasts to compare the two careers in their totality. And since the stats of both players can be discounted due to different conditions, equipment, etc. in the minds of some, perhaps a reasonable suggestion would be to look at the players when they were ("will be"- to be charitable to Tiger) at their best. So here you people go:
Shortly after figuring out his swing, Ben Hogan won 31 tournaments from 1946-48(that's three years). A head on collision with a bus in '49 ended this pace. He won three of his FIVE U.S. Opens after this accident that was supposed to have killed him, or at least render him comatose, or at least cripple him for life. Incidentally, the first of these three came less than a year after the crash. In 1953, Hogan entered six tournaments and won five of them. Among those five were
The Masters, the U.S. Open, and the British Open. So, my question to you is: Knowing what we do about the extent of his crash-related injuries, how many tournaments would Ben Hogan have won had the crash never taken place?
I never had the luxury to see Hogan's swing but I did see a few videos of it. Most notably, I saw a slow motion 3 wood from him off the deck and it was a simply fantastic swing! I think they both have fantastic swings, but to say anyone has something on Tiger when it comes to ball control?? really?? Tiger is one of the best ball strikers of all time, if not, the best.....Hogan is definitely right there with him IMO from the limited video I have seen.
Well, if it makes a difference, Nicklaus was once asked whom he thought was the best ball striker. Without hesitating, he said Hogan. Now, this is coming from a guy who played with Hogan, watched Hogan on the range and played against him. I agree with Nicklaus.

Yeah, he hits it a long way and that will hurt his average, but I would think that "one of the best ball strikers of all time" should at least be in the top half of the field in driving accuracy. I'm sorry but it's not even close. Tiger is #1 because he has the best short game in the history of golf.
Fair enough. I'm judging my opinions on the things I see Tiger do. He carves the ball around like no other and can hit any shot off any lie. To me, that defines ball-striking and he is simply the best at it IMO.
He also has more belief than anyone else,and is not intimidated by missing a fairway.Many players play soft golf due to an inner fear of going for a full Drive.The average Driving distance on Tour is 255m when they can all hit between 270 and 300m if they want.Tiger has proved that you don't have to be straight to be GREAT! You just need the balls and the belief! His inner stregnth and belief beats them ALL hands down.
Hogan developed a great swing from a flawed one but, even now, he is most often considered a better ball striker. Today's golfer can hit out of his shoes, and the reason is club dynamics: the technology of today's clubs allows you to get away with more. The maxim "no forward or backward, or up or down head movement," is no longer an "unarguable, universal fundamental." Miss the sweet spot by a lot, the ball may not go as far but it will go relatively straight. Not so with the old technology.
Thats true for the average player, but for the top pro's, if they are long hitters then hitting fairways is not that simple. Especially with the narrower fairways now days.
I dont agree , tiger wood are some sort of rich man kid, unlike golfer that live in near poverty trying to be great and rich the odds are great trust me :).
Ben Hogan is the triumph of human spirits...the symbol of unwavering self-belief... the iron will to succeed...and become great..he rose against the odds and achieved what was extraordinary...like Tiger and Nickluas...

Tiger will never come close to Hogan in terms of ball striking and ball control. But Tiger is a better putter than Hogan was.
