Gerald sounds a lot like Alexander Oneal.. Too bad he let greed get the best of him. Just goes to show, it really doesn't pay to always think... Me, me, me, meeeee..
@silky1700 Man.....talking about kicking yourself for "assholing" yaself out of the opportunity to be part of one of the biggest groups in history. That has got to be some hard regret to live with.
PLEASE SAY THAT AGAIN, THE MUSIC NOWADAYS IS JUST WATER DOWN. THEY TOOK ALL THE GREAT SOUNDS FROM BACK IN THE DAYS AND MADE EVERYTHING SOUND TRASHY. WHERE IS OR GOOD MUSIC.
I am glad I was around when music sounded this good, 30 years on and nothing can compare to the quality of these sounds. You just do not get the sound of musical instruments much these days, but I dont care the memories will do.
@LAWoman323213 To hear from original Shalamar lead singer Gerald Brown (excluded from Unsung), make sure to watch Jody Watley Unsung Unfiltered Part 8 at her Youtube channel, jwatley1
What a dumb-dumb I am ! I only saw this video about twice in '79, then saw Howard Hewitt in Shalamar afterwards.......I got it in my head it was Jeffery Daniels who sang this song, didn't realise it was another guy looking like him. So all these years I kept wondering why they didn't let Jeffery sing lead every now and then "cuz he sounded good on Take That to the Bank" - 31 years of being dumb ! How embarassing!
Think of where that group would have went had things not god sower with him an Solar. I loved Gerald's vocals then again do you think he would have made the 80's sound? Howard had the 80's sound vocally
@myroseaccount You mean Jody Watley? Who had her own successful solo career... Also Jermaine Stewart had two monster hits of his own in the 80's. Just a great time to be old enough to enjoy the music...
They mentioned him. "The debonair Gerald Brown". Gerald wanted more money, so they dropped him and went with Hewitt. Gerald is a friend of mine from Cincinnati. INCREDIBLE voice. I can just imagine how "This is for the Lover in You: and "Make that move" would have sounded with him singing lead! WOW
@elderdxc No. I think this was before he joined the group. I think this was Shalamar's first hit. Then Howard Hewittt joined right after and replaced the guy you see singing here.
@TheCalebson Also, all three of the people u see in this video were originally Soul Train dancers. Don Cornelius was partners and good friends w/ the late Dick Griffey, who owned SOLAR Records, which at that time and for most of the '80s, was the most successful, black-owned indie record label. It was Don who put them on the map by introducing them to Griffey. Howard Hewitt replaced the lead singer about 6 mnths after they released this single.
Also notice that there were fewer camera changes because fewer cameras meant that there were longer shots of the group actually performing. These days videos are made with 100s of cameras with directors flipping from image to image every second giving a disjointed picture of the group. Go back further to the 60s and you just have even fewer cameras.
The beat and rhythm of this song laid down by the drums and keyboards is sooo good. The jumpsuits and moves are pretty 70s, but there's no way you get this type of fresh and raw sound today. Take that to da bank!
I was a busboy in 77 in NYC. I used to have to drag myself in at 7:30 in the morning to start my shift.I'd play this song on the juke box every time.It sure made stocking sodas and taking out garbage a lot more fun!(LOL)
I love this sh!t!! This makes me smile. I think it's because this is the first song I remember liking when I was a shorty. Love the dance steps between 1:46 and 3:10
This was thee very first 12" single I ever bought and still sounds as good. Like others I liked Gerald Brown too. The music may have been better - but the dance movements have greatly improved since then!
This was thee very first 12" single I ever bought and still sounds as good. Like others I liked Gerald Brown too. The music maybe better - but the dance movements have greatly improved since then!
Gerald had a great voice, would've been great if he stayed with hem for a little longer till Howard would take over..
it's sad to see what music used to be..and what it has been reduced to over the last 30 years..such a shame to see these idiots they call ''artists'' these days on tv..
@LBJTV It really is. The only ones who are picking up instruments are the so called rock n rollers but they're form of rock and roll leaves a lot to be desired. WTF happened to the United States?!?
@honeegrrl Gerald Brown the group because of money that the late head of their record label owed him Dick Griffey didn;t wanna pay him so he left, Plus he;s still performing and in fact he's gonna be featured on Jody Watley's Unfliltered documentary which is on You Tube
What a fantastic sound. Leon's production was the bomb. The mix if voices was super. I never heard a voice like Jody's, that's when artist could be different, look different and still sell records. The lead singer is super bad I love his strong baritone and Jeffery you da man. You don't FEEL recordings like this anymore much less hear them. Thanks for posting this super rare video I want a copy!!!!
