The plural form is 'the Americas', but the singular form must always be defined by the specific location within the Americas, ie. When you see and hear the Star Spangled Banner through the prism of history it is a powerful message.
I have a BA in History from Princeton. One of my main areas of focus was antebellum US History. Last time I checked that was around the time Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner. If you read the whole text of the SSB you will see how irrelevant the words of are today. Besides wouldn't you want to sing about how beautiful this country is rather than be in a constant state of fear and loathing of (Barbary Pirates)? In the end it's a personal preference.
Actually, just to clarify for anyone who wants to know, the antebellum period is the period immediately preceding the Civil War. Most scholars consider the Kansas-Nebraska act to be the beginning of the period, and that was in 1854. However some people say it goes even farther back to 1812, in which case closersource would be correct, since Francis Scott Key wrote the SSB (poem) in 1814 after the War of 1812.
However, the SSB (song) wasn't adopted officially until 1889, and that was for the Navy. It didn't become the national anthem until much later, in 1931 during Herbert Hoover's term. That's after WWI. Somehow, I think it's still really relevant, especially if you consider the story of how FSK came to write the poem while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British.
No matter how many enemies America has, no matter how many trials our great nation goes through, our flag will e'er wave. Land of the free and the home of brave, I'll love it to my dying day and I'm proud to be a American. God Bless the USA.

Oh and if you want to talk about saving lives why don't you take a little advice from McCain. After the war started he immediately purposed that another wave of troops was sent to Iraq. weeks and thousands of lives later Bush listened and the death toll dropped 10fold. So sending more troops on to Iraq would be beneficial to the troops and would get this war over with and restore Peace to the great country of Iraq and Iran. I understand what youre saying & the future can be scary.On a spiritual note we are all one & giving faith to divisions(countries, nationalities, etc.)creates separateness which leads to difference which leads to violence.We do need spiritually humble people who put the lives of all mankind on equal footing & deals humbly with the world through foreign policy & humanitarian efforts.We are in a position to spread health wealth & love to many countries & focus on leading by example instead of fear

I think there is so much deep ignorance and misunderstanding around the world of who/what America is & stands for, it's quite sad for us. Unfortunately, I discovered after 911, that so many foreigners are so brainwashed. If they only knew the history and the true ideals this land was founded on, they could see it differently.(not that Geo. Bush Jr helped the cause much. Good riddance to him.)

Absolutely nowhere. She has been putting out a new album almost ever year and her new album Family came out last year and it's not selling nearly as good as it should be. Check it out, it's one of the best country albums we've had in a LONG time by any artist.

I have a BA in History from Princeton. One of my main areas of focus was antebellum US History. Last time I checked that was around the time Francis Scott Key wrote the Star-Spangled Banner. If you read the whole text of the SSB you will see how irrelevant the words of are today. Besides wouldn't you want to sing about how beautiful this country is rather than be in a constant state of fear and loathing of (Barbary Pirates)? In the end it's a personal preference.

Actually, just to clarify for anyone who wants to know, the antebellum period is the period immediately preceding the Civil War. Most scholars consider the Kansas-Nebraska act to be the beginning of the period, and that was in 1854. However some people say it goes even farther back to 1812, in which case closersource would be correct, since Francis Scott Key wrote the SSB (poem) in 1814 after the War of 1812.

However, the SSB (song) wasn't adopted officially until 1889, and that was for the Navy. It didn't become the national anthem until much later, in 1931 during Herbert Hoover's term. That's after WWI. Somehow, I think it's still really relevant, especially if you consider the story of how FSK came to write the poem while watching the bombardment of Fort McHenry by the British.
