With this skill, you could probably conquer (as a classically-trained pianist) perhaps all of Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Alkan, Chopin, Mozart, all their hardest pieces.
you are truly blessed~I just finished reading an auto biography Art Tatum last month. Another one of my faves is Billy Taylor and Teddy Wilson~I understand what you're speaking of as far as the classical saga, I've been playing classical for about 11 years and now teaching myself to play jazz (something new for me!)~I'd love to one day play some Teddy Wilson/Billy Taylor compositions~
Amazing! Okay I want to learn Jazz on this level.... WHERE DO I START! I know scales & generally how to play, but... Where to begin? Exercises, scales, arps?
great work my friend, you deserve lots of positive comments for all your hard work, i'm just about to embark upon this myself... i'd love to hear you try oscar p's little jazz exercise too. all the best and congratulations.
Fantastic! Art Tatum would have liked, because you did not simply made a copy, but you really FELT the music and it kept the Joy! I listen as it were the first time I did. The best Tiger Rag from youtube. And please tune some keys of this piano for other recordings.
DAMN son! When I saw the title I thought someone was on a HUGE ego trip!
I was shocked when you actually started playing. It wasn't Tatum but nobody really expects that.
You've just inspired me to aim high. I've always been content to be able to play "hard" songs... Never attempted to play anything "impossible" ... and that definition of "impossible" was before I heard Tatum's music.
I have to give you props. Man that was blazing, from piano player to piano player that was assume. I learned his ARTs runs riffs and devices and they are difficult to play. I am learning Tiger Rags now.
Of course, if you can play classical, you can play anything, and maybe Tatum. But if you play Tatum, can you always play Chopin, Liszt, or Rachmaninoff, or Alkan?
Anyway, if you thought Tiger Rag was hard, try playing My Chinatown, My Chinatown, which is in Gb Major. That's full stride all the way!
I don't care who you are, anyone who has heard the original and heard you MUST show respect. You've put your time in and it shows! Superb job... and do another one :)
another master class , as for classically trained , as you say it doesn't really matter though it's interesting to see cross overs because the basic training is so different .
i may be wrong but i cna tell from your stance and posture over the piano that yoy are a classical trained man first ! ! or ?
why is this one a response to "No one?" It's at least 20 times faster! :-) You re amazing playing it! Woooooooooooooow! The hottest precisionist player ever seen alive!
Hmmmmm...You Sound Like Tatum But Slightly Slowed Down But Still Played Correctly, All You Need To Do Now Is A Thelonious Monk Hat, A Suit & Tie, A Descent Piano And Your Set.
not really,I was just curious as too how you got to that level of finger dexterity(through vigorous scales, classical etudes, etc.)? Anyway great job! And do you have any advice on what to practice to really work out ur fingers.
Chris, great job so far!! I'm especially impressed by your ability hit the stride passages at tempo. I'm exactly as far along as you. I still haven't got the insane part that comes next, just after where you made the cut. Those 1000 mph descending runs with full stride underneath don't want to work for me just yet. Keep up the awesome work. Tiger Rag and Tea for Two are perhaps the toughest Tatum, but you have realized the others beautifully, including Tatum's own personal favorite, Humoresque.
Tea for Two is far from the toughest Tatum. Check out Get Happy, Liza, Stardust, St. Louis Blues, Elegy, and all his older(classic) recordings. There are even stride pieces by Tatum that are even faster and incorporate just as much technique compared to his Tiger Rag, but Tiger Rag is his most famous one. Tatum did a lot of fast stride recordings like "Tiger Rag".
With this skill, you could probably conquer (as a classically-trained pianist) perhaps all of Rachmaninoff, Liszt, Alkan, Chopin, Mozart, all their hardest pieces.
What can I have to say to this...wow.

Do you have a score or was it by ear?

This is what you show to your snobby classical friends who say jazz pianists have inferior technique. Assholes.
pianolicious134 11 months ago
@pianolicious134 He said he playing pieces by Alkan help get a technique like that. Alkan is a classical composer!

@chrisjordan83 haha VERY TRUE! I like to say that Art Tatum is the Alkan of the 20th century, and Oscar Peterson is Liszt!
