One of my first ever musical memories this one, my Dad had the vinyl and apparently I couldn't get enough, he had to teach me how to use the stereo cause I kept trying to make it go over & over again. Three year old aren't too gentle with the equipment!
In 1942 British soldier Jack Celliers comes to a japanese prison camp. The camp is run by Yonoi, who has a firm belief in discipline, honour and glory. In his view, the allied prisoners are cowards when they chose to surrender instead of commiting suicide. One of the prisoners, interpreter John Lawrence, tries to explain the japanese way of thinking, but is considered a traitor
@AonaranMan first movie I took my GF (now wife) to see in 84(?). set in a japanses POW camp. the lead character arrives (david bowie) and immediately unsettles the guards by his idiosyncratic behaviour, leading them to believe he holds supernatural powers. it's been argued that better WW2 movies have been made but none better for the almost surreal tension and atmosphere. the film score won 'best' at the brits (I think).
My uncle Leslie was killed in Burma in December 1941 thanks to the Japanese and although I never met him this haunting music always makes me think of what he ( and thousands like him) went through. God bless them all.
my Wonderful Uncle Moses...spent 4 years detained in the pleasure of the Emperor, much to all our displeasure{He never spoke of this period },came back to Tandragee 1 year after 45 ,[sanitorium ,U,S,special visitor] all 60 kgs of dignity !!..yet this film had the skill of portraying the atrocities done yet the Monsters ,after all were Human and did have feelings ,enlightening through hate, transformed into compassion.masterful cinema!
I watch the film first time in 1992. After the years, it became one of my favourite movies, because I was soldier 1 year of my life and undestand good the feelings of all characters... how did it was in real life there at Java.
beautiful theme to a great film IMHo I don't suppose you can post the lord's my shepherd sung buy the prisoners? truly haunting but just magical at the same time . Also loved David Bowie and Riuchi Sacaamoto's ( sp) in put too was Tom Conteh involved too?
my dad was watching this film and when it ended i heard this music and looked over at dad to see if the film had ended. it was the first time i have everrrrrrr seen my dad cry. i fell in luv with this theme and searched it up. dad says ill luv this film so ill watch it in bed tonight.

Pauline Kael described the film as a Fire Island version of the Bridge On The River Kwai. I'm inclined to agree. Love the music.

Loved the movie when it came out, which led me to read the book. A great novel, I remember vividly. Read it, you will be glad you did.
