Modern tracks were not yet invented.

Sport medicin hardly existed.

Training methods were very different.

Jesse Owens was by far the best of his generation. A true legend.

His world record of 8.13 m stood for 25 years.

His olympic record of 8.06 m for 24 years.

You cannot compare Owens and Bolt. A difference of more then 70 years is 3 generations. Can Bolt jump 8.13 m ? I doubt it.

@stephenjstclair He's a track guy, he's like 210 and very frail. This is why the US has been hurting in the sprints, NFL has been leaching talent starting at a young age. They have highschool kids focused on 40's, not 100m. Bob Hayes was a freak as well. Bo Jackson, if he was 230lbs. Besides, you don't need to be that fast in the NFL, and the pads woudl slow him down, where pads don't slow down big bastards like Patrick Willis,u know what i mean.

Bolt's strides are amazing. Most sprinters his height dont do so well bcuz their spine length fatigues when they reach peak speed. But Usain's torso/core length appears to be just a little shorter than most guys his height. Which makes him 1 in 500 million. I guess that's why he's so damn fast.

tough comparison because of all kinds of things (nutrition, chemical-induced improvement, advances in training, the relative level of competition, and the simple progression of the human race). but a strong argument can be made that Owens is the greatest athlete who ever lived, though not only because of what he did in Berlin.
