This is a great movie. I saw years ago while growing up in the closet. It did not make me fear gay bars at all. Plus I live in the age of abercrombie years. LOL. Not the leather biker 70 look. @krakenbwool04 AIDS wasn't even at the forefront yet at the time this movie was released. Many of the people in the clubs were walking time bombs still. The community was very tense about a lot of things which is why I chose to disassociate myself to some degree. Sometimes it's better to be talked bad about than to not be talked about at all, this movie was a big step forward considering they were trying to find a killer in the community, not plant one.
What a groovy nightclub and just think, no one had a cell phone or went home to check e-mail after this night and there was no such thing as a CD or You Tube -

The screenplay for Cruising was written by Friedkin, based on the Gerald Walker book as well as the gay "bag murders" of the late seventies. It was never going to be a "bathhouse slasher".
Actually I read some of it and recall some bathrhous stuff. But when DePalma took it on with Pacino in mind, they played up the bathhouse angle. When Friedkin came on board wanting Richard Gere, they sought the sado/maso angle.
Maybe IMDB or some book. Who remembers. But I remember that thinking Gere would've been the better choice. Pacino was a little toooo old to play a rookie cop.
It's not the Richard Gere part I was wondering about. I'm glad that there was some acknowledgment of all the sex in the movie. They gave out beer and pot to the extras and encouraged them to have sex.

I remember these deep underground clubs that had a "anything goes" atmosphere ,if you survived , you remember the fun . This movie ,well,
The only scene that i cannot bare to watch is the first murder , it's just too gut wrenching ,otherwise , William Friedkin did a good job of directing a captured moment of gay life (the club scenes) for a selected few .

This is a great movie. I saw years ago while growing up in the closet. It did not make me fear gay bars at all. Plus I live in the age of abercrombie years. LOL. Not the leather biker 70 look. Nor the castro clone. It was a great movie about a serial killer. They are in all communities unfortunately. Good movie. And A great movie to watch with your honey on a rainy saturday night.

They didn't. Cruising was filmed in 1979 and released in February of 1980. The Democratic convention was in August of 1980.

There is one major flaw in this scene, at actual Leather bars there wouldnt have been any dancing....but other then that its pretty spot on....the sling might have been in the backroom, but it works...

I wonder if this film still would have been be so badly recieved if it were released in the nowadays. While this grittier perspective of the gay community might been disturbing to many, it's very refreshing to see a side of the gay community that isn't all glitter and camp...though the fisting scene was a bit much. But if heterosexuals can portray negative archetypes without consequence to the image of the entire heterosexual population, then why can't the gays? It's called character variety.

My point was that if a movie portrayed a straight couple fistfucking, nobody watching would think that ALL straight couples fistfuck based on that one example, whereas homosexuals don't have the luxury to be portrayed negatively on-screen without it being viewed as a reflection of the entire community, at least to more ignorant members of society.

@cityIights You're right--it's NOT a negative portrayal of anything; these are just consensual sex acts. But unfortunately some people just take ANY homosexual sex act as offensive, much less something as explicit and taboo as fisting. I can see why gay protesters were so paranoid at being portrayed this way. Remember, this was the 1980s: people weren't as socially liberal as they are today, and AIDs was just discovered. This was not the "gay visibility" that they wanted, however true it was.

@krakenbwool04 AIDS wasn't even at the forefront yet at the time this movie was released. Many of the people in the clubs were walking time bombs still. The community was very tense about a lot of things which is why I chose to disassociate myself to some degree. Sometimes it's better to be talked bad about than to not be talked about at all, this movie was a big step forward considering they were trying to find a killer in the community, not plant one.

Originally, Cruising was supposed to be a gay bathhouse slasher flick starring Al and directed by Brian DePalma. It's both twisted and fascinating with a kick ass musical score and far from being Pacino's worst flick. When Pacino starts to realize who the killer might be, the cat and mouse game between them is really good. If you macho men are secure enough in your masculinity, the club crap won't matter...

He's dancing with his friend the late James Hayden and in the credits, he comes up as coke rag man or something.Actually Richard Gere was the one Friedkin wanted in this movie and Gere wanted to do it, but the studio didn't think of him as a bankable star just yet. Contrary to "conventional wisdom" re: gay-oriented films, "Cruising" is not a gay movie per se--all of the graphic gayness therein is but the back story to what is essentially a most complex murder-mystery tale. I personally love to show this movie at weekend gatherings at my house just to freak out all the (straight) guys who are so defensively homophobic just for laughs.

Do you think Gone With The Wind is a good counter-example ? Regardless of everything else, it is incredibly biased, it contains an attempted rape by some BLACK villains, an actual rape, children dying, war, amputation and some fairy-tale description of the KKK. I would say that's a pretty controversial movie, if you ask me.

The screenplay for Cruising was written by Friedkin, based on the Gerald Walker book as well as the gay "bag murders" of the late seventies. It was never going to be a "bathhouse slasher".

Actually I read some of it and recall some bathrhous stuff. But when DePalma took it on with Pacino in mind, they played up the bathhouse angle. When Friedkin came on board wanting Richard Gere, they sought the sado/maso angle.
