  • There are fracking pads seen all around the epicenter area.

  • Wasn't the previous record for this area at 5.2-5.3 back in the 50's? I don't think there was fracking back then.

  • @pdlip1 5.5-magnitude quake in Canadian County on April 9, 1952.

  • We had one in Oregon in 2001 that was a 6.8. It ain't all that considering that we have better structuring than some other countries...so less to worry about. However, it is really weird to see one big enough to feel, actually hit Oklahoma.

  • Google has blurred out this area TODAY north west and north east of Prauge.

  • I live in the area and instead of simply blaming fracking sites, you might go a little further and understand that we actually do have fault lines in OK, and that is on one of them. Perhaps someone hasn't actually done their research.

Check the OKGS for a diagram of the fault lines.

  • @bloomandbling While there are definitely fault lines in Oklahoma, any seasoned seismologist will tell you that they never thought those faults were capable of producing an earthquake anywhere near this magnitude. Although blaming fracking also doesn't answer that question because it's a little farfetched that it would produce such a large quake with this many aftershocks.

  • @Dubwilcox I agree. They did not think they were capable of this size of quake. I do think it is irresponsible to blame it on fracking for the same reason you said. Small quakes I can see this being the cause...but a 5.6 and a 4.7 seem to me to be larger than a quake that would be produced from those practices.

That and the fact that there have been 21 quakes in less than 48 hours lead me to believe that there is a better explanation than fracking.

  • @bloomandbling What I've heard from those who blame fracking is that old faults that have little or no activity can be reactivated from the constant drilling and injecting of material into and out of the rocks, which displaces them causing gaps that can easily rupture. In other words, destabilizing the rock structure.

  • @bloomandbling And also, all of these earthquakes occured at a depth of 4.9-5km, which is very shallow and coincidentally not very far from the depth of a standard fracking operation. The rare 4.8 in San Antonio about a month ago occured at the exact same depth of 5km. I do think it's worthwhile to consider a link.

  • @Dubwilcox I am not saying that it may not be a contributing factor to the quakes, but to simply dismiss it as the only explanation is irresponsible in my opinion. I actually live in this area and it is not congested with drilling sites. I am not disagreeing with the fact that it may have been a factor. Simply stating that it should not be the only thing focused on.

  • @bloomandbling That makes sense to me.

  • correction...there are now 23 quakes listed for the area. Although I didn't feel some of the more recent aftershocks even though I'm about 8 miles away.

  • i felt this in Joplin Missouri

  • @callofdutybroz Must have been alarming to you folks given what you've been through lately.

  • Dubwilcox, this is a great post to youtube, I was checking out the USGS website last night trying to figure out what was going on with the earthquake apparently it was a strikeslip earthquake (the focal mechanism diagram on USGS is like textbook for strike slip) dipping at 78 degrees, which is seems quite steep. Very interesting, this thing shook my apartment building like a ragdoll. FUN TIMES!!!

  • earthquakes are increasing all around the world at an alarming rate...blame it on what you want but i know its the precursors to the end...we are in the end times people wake up and stop making excuses for all of these things happening open your freaking eyes people we as a human race are smarter than this come on....WAKE UP JESUS IS COMMING

  • @cbuler8302 Wow no seriously wow. There is a way to mitigate the effects of natural disasters, and that is a better warning system. The USGS website documents at least 6 or 7 quakes of smaller magnitude in the same area over the period of 24 hours up to this monster 5.6 earthquake. I think that you're insane but you are right, we should open our eyes, we are smarter than this, the public should be made aware of such frequent seismicity in such a small location, rather than waiting on Jesus.

  • oil/fracking fields ... seen simply by looking at satellite images of the areas .. for sure 'frac' drilling pads and oil wells.
