What people dont get is that doing the matrix move doesnt mean that you can bend backwards slowly and come back up it means dropping down so quickly onto your back that the bullet cant catch you!!!

I saw Bruce Bickford did a stop-motion bullet time effect in The Amazing Mr Bickford ('87) with the camera arcing around a character as a bullet passes thru his torso in slomo. The similar type of camera arc in the Speed Racer intro surely influenced the Wachowski's. I also saw Ernie Kovacs do a similar gag in his 1952 comedy show, where the bullet is pulled on a wire as the camera arcs realtime around a man posing still as he's 'shot' then a 2nd exit bullet is pulled on a wire from behind.

It's a shame The Matrix gets all the credit for bullet time - it existed in films before The Matrix.

I'm not sure when it first got used, but I know Full Contact uses it and it looks so much better and more realistic in that film, which came out 6 years before The Matrix

Well it first appeared in a music video but i cant remember the name. Then it was a film called The Stendhal syndrome or something. But I guess the only film you'd possible know that it appeared in before The Matrix was in Blade in the park scene where Decon Frost dodges bullets. But you are right The Matrix did make it famous and influenced bullet time in such films as The Art Of War and more recently Wanted.

nope they didnt they didnt come along until the matrix, which is the benchmark for bullet time effects. However bullet time in the examples i gave still count as its supposed to demostrate how fast or slow the world in real time is compared to the speed of a bullet
