I think that the reason we have had to wait so long for Moshiach is that HaShem has had a lot of plans for the nations, and for Am Segulah. Nothing can be ommitted, because after Moshiach the whole ballgame will be different.
I also believe that HaShem is leaving more time for Gerim to come home and for Jews to spread more light throughout all the galut.
