Brel was as much an actor/director as he was siner/songwriter in facr one of his movies "Le far west" is considered a masterpiece [overused term] but I'm sure the pleasure of seeing/hearing his own work being picked up by the next "young turks" was a source of great pride to him.
That being said I still much prefer Jack L's version of Port of Amsterdam which unfortunately Brell never heard as he passed on in the late 70's but a good song is a good song and God rest him
Well 1st of all, it would be a Brel cover. Second, Brel's version is the best, he's such a great singer with so much emotion. The best cover is Scott Walkers, because to be honest, Bowie's version is pretty bad (in Bowie terms that is, on it's own it's still a great song.).
Of course nobody can better Brel at this, and while you have a better voice than Bowie he correctly did it with great passion, which I think is the key to this song, but well done anyway it's the best version I've heard outside Bowie and Brel.
If you think he has a better voice than Bowie you better get your ears checked. Brel gets kudos for writing it and his interpretation is ok, but Bowie's is off the charts. Astounding range, control, vibrato and little atonal nuances that neither this guy or Brel could dream of carrying out. Listen to Bowie's again. It can't be improved on.
Not bad actually, he didn't rape the song like david bowie did. Nevertheless this song should be performed raw with more passion. But you gave your own style to the song, i'll give you that.
It is nice, but i miss the feeling of the singer singing the song, a bit to flat in my humble opinion. This version is song to happily and to sober. Give me a raw voice of a drinker and smoker with a lot of passion.
no no no no ahahhahaha he's got a lovely voice this man BUT .....this has to be sang by the the gorgeous cockney babe himself! Its got be sort of ...decadent not american pie.... NO NO
this track is a cover by bowie that's on a cd called bowie at the beeb which includes all kind of accoutis recording of him, done for the bbc, look it up sometimes,it's quite good.
What are you guys all on about?? This isn't even Bowie!! This is one of my favourite songs ever and has been for a good while.. and by far the best and most passionate very I've heard (yes.. including the French Brel original....!) is on the Best of Bowie album... an absolute gem. Dunno who this guys singin is, but he ain't a patch on Bowie...

Très belle reprise de la chanson de Brel. I love so much, maybe much more that Bowie interpretation.

I agree this is a much too happy rendition. It needs passion and a sense of tragedy. Having said that, it is not an easy song to sing correctly.

The debate of "Bowie ripping Brel's song" is just ridiculous. Brel's version is amazing. Bowie's version is amazing as well Two genious.

You're right, the original song is in french, by Jacques Brel, but Bowie didn't "ripped it off", he gave full credits to Brel.
