  • I still remember where I was and what I was doing when that happened :D and the comeback in game 3. Fantastic series. I don't remember if it was the CBC or the Oilers Radio feed, but you could hear Sather squealing in the press box in the background behind the commentators - it was hillarious. And I have to agree with another poster, I didn't remember how quickly that goal came after that save... great video :D

  • Cujo actually did more with this save to help Wings win a Cup than he ever did when he played for Detroit because Stars would have had home ice vs Wings in next round. Instead, Detroit got to play 2nd round at home vs Anaheim. If Oilers had not defeated Stars in 1st round, then Detroit would have faced enormous challenge of winning 3 series on the road vs Dallas, Colorado, & Philly. Maybe that Wings team could have done it but they were probably thrilled that they would never have to find out.

  • best looking oiler jerseys... now they've brought back the orange and blue crap

  • I remember having a hockey card with him making this save on it. He was always my favorite growing up. So lucky I got to know him personally too.

  • and i never realised that they scored RIGHT after the save. wow.

  • "oh my GOD what a save!"

NOBODY tells gary thorne what he can and can't say! NOBODY.

  • HOF worthy

  • I am pretty sure that any Bantam goalie can reach their arms out and let a puck be shot into it.

Not a great save a very lucky save. Terrible technique, over committed on easy little wrap around.

  • I hate the new commentators for VS. I'd mafia drop both Pierre Mcguire and Mike Milbury from the brooklyn bridge into the east river.

  • @WuTangShogun36 McGuire is a CLB

    CLB = Creepy Little Bastard

  • Gary Thorne will always be America's hockey voice to me

  • i think is one of the best playoff plays ever, simply because of the composition that happened in one minute, from the great save to the game winning goal

  • jesus christ I miss Gary Thorne and Bill Clement. I loved watching NHL2Night on ESPN2 back in the day. those WERE the days, amen @failedentry

  • @a684423 Clement and Doc all day.

  • CUJO was amazing with Leafs

  • I miss the times when Edmonton and Dallas met in the playoffs virtually every year, even though Dallas almost always won.

  • @LTomlinson31 This time Edmonton got Dallas right before they were ready to become a great team. This Dallas team in particular was very good but not great and susceptible to an upset against a team like this. This was hardly a shocking upset. Edmonton beating my Avs next year on the other hand after being down three to one was a monumental upset.

  • In his prime, CuJo was one of the best.

I'm American but I grew up watching HNIC. When Canadian teams do well in the playoffs, it always makes me smile. Old school baby!

  • Sounds like we have pro American douche bag commenting on shit he had no idea about!!

  • Weight & Marchant, two American guys teaming up for a Canadian victory! Then the next ten years in a row, Dallas beat Edmonton in the playoffs almost every year.

  • Everytime I watch this video, gave me a goosebumps, probably one of the best playoff series.

  • besides the oilers stanley cup run in '06, this is my favorite oilers hockey moment ever. i vividly remember staying up late to watch this, despite being only seven yrs old. cujo was an absolute monster (in the mcguirean sense of the word) in this series as well as the next one against the avalanche. some of the best goaltending i've ever seen.

  • Grapes said it best, "it's better to be lucky than good, and cujo is lucky and good"

  • This was a great moment. Dallas kept fucking Edmonton over and over and over in the playoffs or the preplayoffs and to have the Oilers finally beat them in a series was super sweet!

  • No luck involved there! lol Imagine. A human being diving to his right with his hand open. Wow, I have never heard of such a thing! Oh wait my mother could do that!!! People that is not a great save, It was far more lucky than it was skill.

  • @TheGoalieGuru how can you call yourself a goalie guru? as a goaltender myself even I can appreciate the reaction time it took cujo to not only recognize the shot was coming, and even after missing with his stick have the agility to leap and pull off a desperation save.

  • I still remember where I was when this happened live!

  • where the hell can i watch the full version of all these oilers vs stars games?

  • @shotty2222 Dunno where you can watch all of them, but this game in particular you can watch in its entirety on the DVD for the Oilers 10 Greatest Games.

  • Respond to this video... this was one of the best playoff series i had ever seen.

  • Anyone who puts on the maple leaf jersey is a douchebag... (well except Cujo, come on now :P )

  • Marchant's goal one of my all time favorite oiler moments

  • Cujo was way better as a Leaf.

  • When they said the best of seven series, they werent joking. I was ten and i still remember stayin up late to watch these games, and being on the east cost that can get pretty late lol. I almost cried when i saw joe newendyke with that open net, then the magic happend :)

  • this was amazing, Cujo really was a great goalie in his heyday

  • I'll never forget this series. Cujo's best days were with the Oilers and quickly became a sellout after putting on a blue Maple leaf

  • LOL, is that Kevin Lowe on the bench at the end there? Smiling and slowly walking onto the ice?

  • its a shame he never won a cup

  • One of my favorite series of all time. Cujo was a beast.

  • dam he put on the jets there.

  • Remember watching this live. Absolutely amazing series. Thanks for the post!

  • Yep I remember this one...one of the best playoff series I ever saw.

  • Holy fuck Marchant...at 1:33 that's the fastest I've ever seen anyone skate, even faster than Bure lol

  • the fat man could not believe it. I love Ken Lowe in 1998 when they eliminated the Avalanche: "bring on the fat man."

  • Thanks for the memories, Cujo -- especially this one! All the best in your retirement.

  • One of my favorite games.

  • why did we ever give away marchant

  • Heh I remember being 11 years old and watching this game with my Mom... When Marchant scored we both jumped off the couch causing the room to shake and a flower pot fell off the top of the TV and smashed all over the place... We didn't care at all!

  • best thing Andy Moog ever did for the Oilers

  • You know, aside from helping them win their first Cup...

  • total slash at 0:07-0:08

  • In todays hockey yeah, not in 1997...

  • that was a slash in 1997 as well

  • Hahaha....total slash.....Dallas shoulda been goin on the pp right there!! Wouldn't have mattered anyway, Cujo would have stoned them !!!

  • In just this little clip, there were about five instances of interference ... and it didn't ruin the game did it? Idiot, asshole NHL board of governors. Now, you cant do shit. Whoever was on Nieuwendyk on the save would have received 60 minutes of penalties in today's game.

  • I still have my Cujo T-Shirt.

  • Hitchcock has put on some weight.

  • kovalenko -> I'm here too guys! We winz the world!

  • Didn't realize it was Cujo's 29th birthday at the time. What a gift.

  • 30th Birthday. Not 29th.

  • oh my gosh wat a save, the announcer was sochoked he said OH MY GOD, which u shud nt say on tv, but yeah

  • yay!

  • this is y CUJO is a hall of famer

  • I think CuJo almost shit his pants on that play!!!

  • Marchant still has great wheels 12 years later, but his burst of speed on this goal is stunning. The Dallas defenceman thinks he has position, but Marchant has already blown past him. Great to see this whole sequence play out in real time, starting with Cujo's most memorable career save.

  • One of the greatest sequences I've ever seen in my 20+ years watching this game. I remember it like it was yesterday. Absolutley amazing.

  • least we got 'em one time

  • wow back then cujo was the best. loved him as a leaf

  • Thats perfect goaltending!!!

  • This is, hands down, the greatest save in hockey history! I can't believe how fast he lept across the goal crease to make that save!

  • You could tell Cujo was just killing the stars internally in this series

  • 12 years ago...I was at this game...and I still don't know how that puck didn't go in.

  • Why does everyone start arguing about which team is better? Why not just appreciate that amazing, clutch save.

  • Ducks39, after 06 is when Anaheim became the dirty, team of dickholes that they are now so i guess i have to agree with you :D

  • Amazing save!! Does anyone know the name of the song playing in the background? it goes well with the moment!!

  • old school hockey was the best.... anything after 06 is gay

  • those were the days

  • No Goalies like CuJo anymore......best Goalie in history to never win a cup...to bad! My Fav of all time and I'm a Habs fan haha!

  • ya all the new goalies arent the same as the ones back 5 to 10 years ago.

brodeur Cujoand roy are the all time best

  • belfour and hasek were awesome too

  • Forgetting Nabokov...?

  • Andy Moog is too slow and too small to be a goalie, especially when the pads weren't as big back then as they are today. So why the hell he is the netminder?

  • take that Stars you suck!

what a great moment in oilers history!

  • yeah too bad the stars have beaten up on the oilers everytime the two met in the last 8 playoffs.

  • As crazy as the save and the series was, it was only the first round, the oilers then lost to Colorado in 5 I think.

  • Best save in NHL history

  • I remember watching this line. I nearly shat a brick when Cujo made that save. Still remains my favourite save of all time.

  • live* not line

  • lol the NHL 09 commentators :D

  • Its too bad Cujo couldnt play like that with the Red Wings, Its a good thing we got Osgood back!

  • ya me too inosentz i remember sittin on the edge of my bed in my room watching this when the oilers scored i screamed so loud my mom ran in worried as hell that i'd hurt myself while i was jumpin up and down that they won ahha

  • i remember watching this game... i was 9 years old and it's probably my most memorable hockey moment. I think i cried i was so excited

  • man

marchant, grier, guerin, weight, niinnama, not sure if poti was playing during this

but i was seven and those players were everything back then

  • The Oilers at the end of the 90's were so courageous, a good team with a big heart and didn't give up anything at each game they can play during their playoff...

  • if anyone knows where i can download or get my hands on this game please let me know

  • "there was nothing but air, and then, there was cujo"...haha, im a bruins fan, but what a fucking classic line.

  • Marchant one of the hardest working guys around. blessed with insane speed, cursed with stone hands. poor guy. I guess that's why he does so well on the PK. doesn't need to shoot just move your feet.

  • jesus he's fast.

  • these 2 team hate each other and it started in 1999 and the railvery has been since

compare that to the ducks and reds

  • I was amazed Marchant even hit the net...

I remember watching him on SOO many breakaways and he'd miss the net sooo often

  • marchant doesnt score many goals with the ducks, but he is one of the top penalty killers

  • he back in maple leafs

  • yep. 2nd goalie.

  • This is the series that made me an Oilers fan

that save then the goal then the next games amazing

  • Do Dallas fans ever sit down? How annoying!

  • it means they are into the game

  • marchant isn't that fast anymore is he?

  • And why should he? He's a Stanley Cup Champion! The drive is not there anymore after playing that long.

  • Definetly Cujo's greatest save ever ^^

  • wat about the one when he was takin out behind the net and rushed back in and made that tremendous sliding stick save

  • This was in OT, so I think this is bigger and the puck was in the air too.

  • Is he a free agent this year? Cause if he is, Edmonton should sign him, he can bring them back to glory!

  • Look at 1:25... That would be a penalty in 2008... Part of the game in the 90s.

  • def correct on that one

  • I had forgotten about all that fucking obstruction.

lol @ shock and awe of Dallas crowd and Todd Marchant being so young.

  • That is the FASTEST save I've ever seen! Joe Niewendyke had the whole right side of the net to shoot at and Joseph was on the OPPOSITE side of the net! I never get tired of watching this save! Is there ANY faster save than that?!

  • wow cruelty to the oilers... Thats just rude and mean.

  • pff harsh words to the Oilers, yes the Stars did have the upper hand for the next few years, but being an Oilers fan since the end of time gotta say this was a franchise highlight and i have had nothing but respect for these two teams since. They have produced the most entertaining games and one of the best rivalries ever to grace the nhl.

  • agreed. edmonton versus dallas, edmonton versus colorado have been some of the most entertaining and exciting hockey series of recent past.

  • Toronto and Ottawa/ Toronto and Monreal best games existing

  • so...hows Dallas been doing lately? 3 wins in their last 10 I think...only 1 Cup to show for all those good teams they had. lol, once Modano and Zubov retire, they'll be relegated back to the sewer where they belong. Hallelujah! Dallas is the gayest team in the history of professional sports.

  • How about currently in the Conf. Finals????Where are your Oilers? That's what I thought. From 1998-2003.... being so mentally ruined by the Stars so much, I can see why you have all this hate for the Stars. Btw, the core of the Stars consist of Morrow, Ribeiro, Richards and some young talented forwards and D-men. Edmonton fans are the gayest in the history of mankind.

  • I meant to say, some Edmonton fans. Not all.

  • lol, no need to hate champ. the Stars did eventually win the Cup. They haven't had a sniff since, but they did win it. Once. Sure, the Oilers do have 5, and have been to the finals more recently than Dallas and have a team loaded with awesome rookies but, all that's no reason to hate. It's not their fault you cheer for a gay team.

  • Hadn't sniff since????? What about when they went back to the Finals the following year even though they didn't win it? Also, you must be fascinated with the term, "gay". You must be one. Please stop humiliating yourself and the rest of the Oilers fanbase.

  • went to this game with my dad. was totally awesome! so worth the traffic we had to fight to get there!

  • well, jeezum mister, that done sucks to lose to a bunch of canucks like that there. I wuz jis goin' back to the bar to hit on sally-sue and galldarnit if they don't score.

  • I remember watching this live, seeing that jaw dropping Cujo save. I went to get a glass of water, and when I came back, it was over. Great series.

  • cccuuuuujjjooooo

    cccuuuuujjjooooo

  • he signed a new 1 year contract with calgary

  • haha yea man what happened to cujo in the next few years though, like how old is he now??

  • This was a great series. Cujo played like a man possessed.

I love the reaction of the Texan hockey fans after Marchant delivers the death blow in overtime.

His goal is one of my all-time favourites because it prevented the Stanley Cup from going to Texas.

  • Too bad that wasn't the case two years later.

  • that first saves was fricken rank. we own

  • I like how all the kids leap off the bench when Marchant scores, and there's Kevin Lowe with a little smile on his face, calmly going to join them. Good times.

  • i was at the game and after Marchant scored that goal this guy on his team was trying to kiss him!!! LMAO

  • I was at this game, and to this day, I have no idea how Joseph made that save. And with Marchant leaving Ledyard on his backside, Moog had no chance.

  • Well obviously he trying to hit it out of mid air he missed and the other guy shot and he swung himself over and put his glove down and it went in his glove!

  • Best Goalie in The NHL

  • fuckin rites

  • pretty much the reason i watch hockey, playofss just arne't the playoffs without this series. there are no other 2 teams i respect like these guys. old time trap hockey at its best

  • i like the way you think, best series ever, nhl definatly messed up by trying to get rid of the trap

  • That is the save is going to send Cujo to the Hall of Fame. That is a sure bet.

  • This was the most amazing series I ever watched.

Does anyone know where I can find clips of the 3-goal comeback in the last 3 minutes of Game 3? I remember sitting around with my dad, and he changed the channel because it was 3-0 with 4 or 5 minutes to go, then we changed it back 5 or 10 mins later and it was 3-3.

    That whole series was great.

  • yes man I agree....best series I've ever watched too...Cujo was fuckin amazing that whole series!!

  • amazing, how often does a team come back to score like that after a huge save like that

  • I know i hope cujo comes bak to split time with Razor this year. Cujo is my fav goalie

  • i remember this play, i remember how i basically shit my pants when i saw it, one of my favorite oiler memories. And as for 69owned...i shake my head at you, cujo is 69owning in phoenix

  • I remember that team: Weight, Smyth, Marchant, Kovalenko, Czerkawski, Grier, Joseph, Buchberger, Arnott - what a great team it was.

  • The broadcaster sounded like he had a heart attack when Cujo made that save. One of the greatest money goalies of all time, wow!

  • CUJO is the man HE SHOULD GO BACK TO TORONTO YEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • I remember being up late that night jumping up and down screaming. Next day walked into school and saw a guy with an oilers hat and we jumped around and screamed again. What a goal. What a series. I miss those Oilers. 3 goals in 1min 12 seconds.

  • unreal brings back great memories... anyone got the video of Smyth gettin the gwg down the wing slapper on the road in dallas?

  • damn thats good. i remember that so well...it was a huge deal in edm.

  • I remember this too. I'm so glad it's on here.

  • I was expecting this to be the save he made vs Colorado in the 90s when he fell out of the net and raced back in... but this one is equal Id say.

  • I have the HNIC version of this game with Bob Cole calling the save and goal. I just need something to transfer videotape to computer. Real Classic Moment; I remember watching this goal at home and screaming 'MARCHANT!', what an upset!

  • OOO PLEASE GET IT

  • amazing

  • Holy crap! CUJO!!! Where the heck did that come from?!! And Marchant, outskating the defense to creat a breakaway. Great job!

  • I could watch this all day.

  • Ill never forget this moment i was in a walmart watching w/ my dad and some other people... when cujo saves then marchant scores we celebrated like no others and funny enough some of the people who were there are still family friends today

  • hey who did oilers go on to vs?

  • Colorado, which they lost to

  • oo thx

  • It was this game alone that got me on the Edmonton bandwagon ... havn't fallen off yet and never will. :)

  • ya right, u remember the blues scoring 6 in the third to come back and win?? no question that was the greatest comeback of all time. i think it was against toronto

  • Thanks for posting that! It brings back so many fond memories. Watched that series in Vancouver and I remember the newscasters here calling that one of the greatest comebacks of all time.
