Actually, in the comics, Maria didn't die of the gunshot, she was just very injured. But later, she died of a chronic disease. Shadow thought she died from the gunshot, though.

The reason Shadow blew up the moon was because he only remembered half of her last words, and later, Amy helps Shadow to remember that Maria wanted him to protect everyone. Does that help?
