I'm a newb to this game as I had NES/Genesis instead growing up and only got to play Super Mario Kart for SNES a handful of times as a kid. How does the long boost work? I can get it started but it seems like it ends really fast even when I haven't hit anything or hit the gas. Is it only supposed to last a few seconds then wear off?

shortcut on donut plains 1 was sick but not stylish (a nuetral statement); koopa-troopa's poweslide on the last track was sweet; but the ghost house race needs a lot of work. expert level, but still room to grow. not even racing with the big dogs, yet. xotic, please tell me this, when you're drifting, how do you stop perfectly at each corner and keep going? is there some secret to drifting in this game? cuz i notice you hop before each turn, maybe that has something to do with it?

@shadowhalo24 If you're talking about power sliding you just press the jump button, stear the way you want and hold it until you want to straighten out.

@shadowhalo24, on the classic SNES controller, all you do is hold down the jump button into the turn, and release when you straighten out. Koopa troopa and toad are the best at taking corners in this game. Even though they have the overall slowest speed on a straighaway, they more than make up for it on their cornering ability, and I feel are the best for that reason. King koopa and Donkey Kong have the fastest straighaway, but are the worst at turning. The other 4 are somewhere in between.

Also one of the bowser castles has a flaw where if you use the feather as you cross the finish line and jump way out in the lava the guy who rescues you actually pulls you back behind the finish line and brings you across again completing a lap in like 2 seconds.

At the beginning when selecting drivers if you hit X and B or Y and A at the same time it will shrink your character so you start every board tiny.

I actually jumped over that donut plains wall once without a feather or mushroom. Never could figure out how I did it. In fact I spent awhile running into the wall trying to duplicate what I did but I never could get it to work again. I dont have the game anymore so I cant try it with a mushroom.

Get a gamecube controller. wii mote is not good for snes games and some classic controllers don't work in HBC.

On Ghost valley, you can also take the shortcut if you pick up a mushroom. Use it before the "speed bump" and you will get a major jump from it.

P.S. I am unbeatable at Mario Kart and that's no lie :)

Use the longboost. When you have a mushroom, hit a wall, so that you turn sideways and let go of B, so that the mushroom takes control of the velocity until you decelerate.

eh? didn't know about england/regional version versions being slower than (us?)...but there was one trick i didn't know about: the long boost - bent 'shrooming wall kicker (very nice!) I don't remember my lap times, but wondering how the long boost compares with a lap time from a big guy...and the wall jump on donut plains (i have done it, but haven't mastered it). btw - the use of the feather on ghost town shows that you're good, but not great. keep it up! nonetheless, you're better than most

Believe me I , sadly, spent my uni years playing this with my housemates, I can remember all my times for all the tracks.

Incidentally my housemate was quicker than me.

We used to lap nearly all the computer characters in nearly all races.

The one difficult type of races were the ice ones as the jumping is less effective and there is always a bit of the unknown. That aside endless practice (at the expense of a good degree) ensured legendary times.

from what I've seen - I just pulled out some Genie codes - and it does the exact same thing with the grass/mud etc. You can just float over without worrying about anything - it even works on lava in the castles. Brings back memories :D

To be honest it really isn't that fast. I say this to criticise myself not compliment because it shows how much of my university life i spend playing it, but i would usually do 51 seconds for the 1st track.

You are way to wide on a couple of the corners, should always hug the side even when jumping.

you're from england, so you play on the version that runs at 97.5% the top speed. that would be impossible to go that fast. test it out, and see what times you can pull off.

you cant drop or throw those at least as far as I know. The only thing you can drop other than a banana is a green shell by pressing Down on the D-Pad and the attack button. You could throw with them with Up and the attack button too.

its easy to throw fireballs, you just have to push down on your dpad then push right on it, then push "Y"

you have to find the perfect balance between holding R and releasing R on turns. it took me quite a few months to learn every turn. there's one turn in the game i still can't do well. can you guess which one?
