The last Bb-flat sounds strained and tight in the throat! How can you say it´s wonderful? There has to be atleast 50 tenors from the 2000th century that sang better notes above A-natural then Domingo! I can name a few Filippeschi, Pertile, Merli, Bonisolli, Corelli, Del Monaco, Bjorling, young Di Stefano, Lanza and Lauri Volpi. Domingo´s best arias are E lucevan le stelle and La fleur que tu... at least to me. And even those arias are sunged better by Corelli and Bjorling!
Wow uncomonly good for Domingo himself. I didn't expect such great singing IN VERDI from Plácido. (He is my favourite verismo tenor, don't get me wrong.)
Who cares who is better, When they all bring such passion to our hearts! I was just listening to Pavarotti singing La Boheme. Wow! I love them all. Thanks for this one, Placido - and whoever posted this! Bravisimo!
Corelli had abilities, but too bad for his 6 year career. Mingo's career? Wanna talk from a technical standpoint? Corelli's onset of his phonation, almost always to me, sounds glottal, this is why his voice could last him, it was all push... Mingo, whose high notes are "choked" and unreliable perhaps, was a powerhouse.. he kept at it for decades..who has more ability? It's an interesting question, but one that shouldn't be asked.
Corelli sang in optimal form for more than 15 years. And i'd prefer to sing one day like Corelli than 1000 years like Domingo. Man, check e.g. Corelli's rendition of Spirto gentil (here in yt)! A few things Domingo does sing better than Corelli though: the flower song from Carmen for instance
Corelli's legato was problematic, his diction muddy he scooped like crazy and his rthytm was incredibly sloppy. He exaggerated and sobbed too much.He had a squillante voice but he was a very poor musician Domingo's interpretations are much better.
@cer1n Corelli had Turandot, Aida, Chenier, Ernani, Trovatore, Carmen, Don Carlo,Tosca,Norma, IPagliacci,Poliuto,&Forza as signature roles, which indicates to me that perhaps your criticism of him, helped him achieve a status in these operas that Domingo never attained, Although Domingo has sung over 130 different operas, he does not have a role that he can call his own.A signature role.Corelli also had the ability to diminuendo & use mezza voce.Corelli could be heard in the theatre&PD inaudible
@Webarton Have you seen both Corelli and Domingo live?I have, and Corelli was extremely exciting while I was enthused about seeing Domingo live .I was very dissapointed in a Pagliacci performance, where I found him almost inaudible.Corelli had numerous signature roles like Chenier Trovatore Aida Ernani Turandot Poliuto Carmen Forza Don Carlo. Domingo has sung over130operas,but I cannot think of a signature role.Nice quality, but he doesn't seem to be suited for the more spinto roles.

I was reading some of your earlier comments about me, asking me if I fancy a banana, no I don't. I mean, giving your opinion about the voice is one thing, but talking about a singers vocal problems, and vocal technique, without even understanding the way the voice works.. I feel sorry for you, truely.. Web-One of the reasons why Alagna was booed off of the stage at La Scala is because he sung the final cadence of Celeste Aida very poorly. He belted the noted, it was pushed, and did not do a diminuendo on a Bb. Get a clue!
Web-Try Corelli for a superb spinto rendition and Pava 1984 Vienna performance for a rendition with a lyric touch. I was watching Pava and Domingo before your daddy shagged your mommy when she was ovulating. MIMGO's vocal abilities are pedestrian as compared to Corelli and Pava.
Web-Your reductionist reasoning is as developed as that of a monkey. Do you fancy a banana? Domingo never did a diminuendo on a Bb (it's not an A) in Celeste Aida. Domingo never was vocally very capable. Anything above an Ab was a trial and error exercise. There is a reason why he's been ridiculed in the opera world as Mingo (where's the Do?). So don't expect a diminuendo from him. It's way out of his reach.
The man, if it needs saying, is a marvel. Here is Domingo, one of the 20th-century's greatest tenors extending his hegemony into the 21st and, in his sixties, tackling, and triumphing in, yet another new role.

In case you sheepish Domingo fans missed...top tenors since Corelli do a diminuendo on Bb in the final cadence of this aria. Domingo, with his flawed technique, could not dare doing it in a studio recording as he could not! And his Bb was simply weak. Do you even know what you're applauding?

Alagna should never ever have sung Radames. Neither is voice not his technique is developed enough. The result was devastating for him. By taking on heavier roles, he also damaged his lyric voice. I'd say, though, Alagna was technically better in his good years. Domingo's technique is nothing special. Hence, the strangled and pushed sound he produces, especially in his upper register.

If you consider MINGO's pedestrian rendition of Radames as wonderful then you need to check the likes of Tucker, Corelli (even Pavarotti). Domingo has always technically inferior and his vocal production and range was quite limited as compared to those.

That is nonsense, as it is for me even to COMPARE the two because Domingo's career outdoes most present day top tenors by a mile. Please think twice before you post ignorant comments on the internet. ^_^;;
Singing 130 roles with reproducible mediocrity is called artistic prostitution and show a complete lack of commitment to artistic excellence. It is impossible to truly master so many roles even in a very long career. But then again, that was never MINGO's purpose. He was the used car salesman of the opera houses, and his clients were mostly unsuspecting sheepish audiences.

People who don't understand the abilities of these singers should not be making bullshit comments like this, period. A top tenor, even the top tenors from nowadays can easily diminuendo, which you use to determine the ability of singers; That Bb is chosen by the artist, not by a few that apparently set an imaginary standard. You have psychological problems if you think that Placido cannot diminuendo on a Bb, you are a fool. Bb is not even really that high for a top tenor.

As seen in this rendition of Celeste Aida, MINGO (where's the DO?) is INCAPABLE of doing a DIMINUENDO as it is expected from a top dramatic tenor. Indeed, he doesn't even do it in a studio recording, which is much easier for obvious reasons. MINGO's vocalistic shortcomings, which are very major and not acceptable in a supposed top tenor, were nicely covered up by aggressive publicity. The audience have been sold a product which is not as good as it should be.
Theinquisitive4ever is a person who uses incomplete information and who hates Domingo, so any opinion is charged with envy and is nonsense. Domingo is not only a great tenor but one of the very best of the history, certainly more complete than Pavarotti, with a warmer voice, excellent phrasing, musicality, a very rich register, high notes squillantes and with open sound and a great line. Theinquisitive4ever cannot ressit Domingo had the greatest carrer in opera history.

The true GREATS of opera were honest and tried perfecting a repertoire which suited them throughout their career (tuned it as needed as their voice darkened with age) and aimed for quality instead of quantity. That is something MINGO never bothered achieving. What he lacked in voice and technique, he tried making up in salesmanship and artistic prostitution. Crucify me all you want, but sooner or later people will come to terms with all this...to be continued...

You can compare Pavarotti and Domingo in the following sense: Pavarotti excelled artistically. Domingo never did although he was marketed as such. Do you even know how many operas were transposed for Domingo so accommodate his limited voice and technique? He struggled producing a solid B on a consistent basis. He leads the list on cracking!
I'm Italian, and actually I understand him perfectly. Then, he may not have a powerful voice, but he has what I love the most in a opera singer, and that's heart.
You're right about that Bb! It's the test of a great singer. Pavarotti can't hold a candle to him. One of the great voices of our time. Thanks for posting this. By the way, have you ever heard of Jussi Bojerling? Another great singer--long gone, however. He was Swedish; I may not have the spelling of the last name exactly right.
You can't compare Pavarotti to Domingo because they had different repertoires. Pavarotti was so much better in the Bel Canto range, and Domingo likewise as a dramatic tenor. I personally thought it was folly for Pavarotti to sing this role, as a Bel Canto singer, maybe he was the greatest...
There was a great Hugarian tenor, Jozsef Simandy. He coud sing "messa di voce" in this final Bb. Started it in piano, he produced a forte with a crescendo, and afterwards did a decrencendo, and finished the note in piano. Noone else could do it.
Me too. Di Stefano could sing perfect Bs pianissimo. I've heard him do it in live recordings. Not sure if he could do Cs like that, but I know he could diminuendo them to pianissimo.
I have the DVD of him in Aida from the Metropolitan New York. His high C during the finale of the Grand March is tremendous. How he achieved that note through about two hundred musicians I'll never know but what an ariist
No tenor high C's in Aida. The part does not go above high B flat, but there are lots of these. At any rate, Domingo avoided high C in live performance, like many tenors in his voice category.

I'll wager that Giuseppe Di Stefano could have done it...
