Sutherland sang both roles Streich fell ill half way through the run. Sutherland originally sang Herz and Streich Silberklang. Sutherland changed from Herz to Silberklang half way through the season and Labay took over Herz.
Yes, it is two separate roles and because of Streich's illness Sutherland had to change from Mme Herz to Mme Silberklang. Sutherlands' role was covered by Naida Labay.
At Glyndebourne in 1957 Rita Streich was to have sung Mme Silberklang. She fell ill and Sutherland took over, singing the F's in key. Her original role as Mme Herz was taken by Naida Labay.
To my knowledge Sutherland did try a public high F in Sonnambula for one performance in 1962. Also I believe Sills did the high f's in zauberflote. In fact, she complained that the whole night she worried about those notes.
It'son the "down side" of the pitch..and not struck dead center. Listen to her approach..and she merely lunges at it. This is why she was never a successful Q of N..and she herself knew it. In live performance, she had to transpose the arias down...as she did the "Bell Song". On her "Prima Donna" album, the aria is sung in tone (with high E's) but she never snag it in that kiey in live performances...always down in Eb. it's not a sin to tranpose...
Sutherland NEVER EVER sang a high F in public. The Queen of the Night arias were transposed DOWN (the first one by a semi-tone and the second one by a full tone)...and the aria of the Q of N as recorded...the F is flat. She never recorded any high F's...not like Ms. Matthews. That is NOT a put down of Sutherland...just a statement of fact.
I've never watched or listened to any opera (I know, what a heathen) but I have to say that this is an amazing video! Thanks Tacy for sending out this family contact - Ted, your daughter's incredible!
The journalist compares her to"La Stupenda" = Joan Sutherland...except Sutherland never had those extrmeme high notes. Basically ...top Eb was Sutherland's limit. BRAVA Emma Matthews!!!
This is incorrect. She sang many F's live early in her career [eg Queen of Night under Klemperer]. There are several F's on record and she says in an interview on this site [Joan Sutherland's High Notes] that she has sung an F# to her husband in a fit of rage!
Some great high notes in these clips for sure. Such a charming and down-to-earth woman - not many "divas" would even attempt a high F-sharp, even in the studio, lete alone confess in a public forum to the note go wonky and retaking it a few times (though of course it happens all the time now-a-days in studio recordings with splicing and retakes). So that honesty and candor is refreshing!
Buy this cd! It's incredible. The Lucia is beautifully warm and round, the two English songs are heart-rendingly gorgeous, and the Proch variations are unsurpassed on record.

glad to see ABC Classics promoting her. If they do their job, there's no denying Matthew's place as the next superstar. Her resources are awesome!

Thanks for the clarification

Thus Sutherland's role did NOT include the high F's...as those notes belong to the role of Mme. Herz...not Silberklang.

It is TWO separate soprano roles in the opera...and I doubt they kept switching roles back and forth.

Madame Herz is the high soprano with F's; Silberklang is the young soprano whose role goes to high D's.

Sutherland sang both roles in these performances.

Sutherland had dazzling high E's and Eb's...but she never had a "public perfoming" high F; neither did Beverly Sills.

1396.9 Hz is dead centre for an F6.

Her F in Queen of Night aria is recorded as exactly 1396.9 (+29) Herz. Therefore it is not flat.

What does the Journalist say at 0:50? "The similarity to ???? voice". I can't understand, is she referring to another singer?
songbirdwatcher 2 years ago
She says "La Stupenda's voice" - referring to Dame Joan Sutherland who was given this nickname in Italy after her performances in "Alcina" in Venice.
