  • There is much more depth to this pieace. Slow it down, take your time to conect to the circular motion and a new level of an emotional depth will reveal itself to you. Love you, ezra

  • This is one of my favorite interpretations of this piece. Yes, the tempo varies greatly throughout but I feel that captures the essence of what the composer was trying to say. Of course that is simply how I feel about it. Congratulations on a job well done!

  • very nice... by the way, I love your chinrest! what model is it?

  • @gastorgaq The model is called Viva SAS and can be ordered from their website. All the best from Scotland! :)

  • @skuuzii thks thks thks thks!!!. From Chile :)

  • @skuuzii thank you!! :)

  • pretty, but should have more contrast. think ''sequence''.

  • @Muse4toujours Many thanks. I actually added in quite a few dynamics and rubato, none of which is of course in the urtext. If I was playing in historically accurate period style with Baroque instrument and gut strings etc there would be even less contrast. I'm trying to keep a balance between adding a bit but not over-Romanticising the music, but I'll keep your ideas in mind. All the best from Scotland! :-)

  • @skuuzii Gut strings were used long after the Baroque. Metal strings weren't introduced until after WW2, and they more popular with Americans than Europeans. The concertmaster of a major American philharmonic used gut until he retired in 1960.

  • I love your rendition.

  • @ealiagac Thankyou very much! :)

  • I'm playing this right now :)

  • @ZtiluakLibb :)

  • i wish i could play like that

  • @marthaknie We are always learning and if you practice and enjoy playing then you can only go upwards! :)

  • crusiating.... killling machine! well done man

  • @Cali333222 Cheers from Scotland :-)

  • love it ;)

  • @NurNH Thanks a lot!

  • this sounds so beautiful! im thinking of either learning how to play piano or violin they are both wonderfl instruments, would you mind telling me is violin was difficult for you?

  • @clarissa440 Every instrument has hard moments but it's all worth it in the end. I would very much recommend the violin as it's a versatile and rewarding instrument to play :)

  • If you weren't already aware, this piece of music is available as an audition piece for the Youtube Symphony Orchestra this year. Consider it, you should. (: Wow, I always thought it was so much faster...I fell in love with this piece after hearing the Christoph Poppen recording.

  • @darkangel102938 Thankyou very much, it's a great piece. I'll look into YSO for next year :)

  • This piece of music is available as an audition piece for the Youtube Symphony Orchestra. Consider it, you should. (: Wow, I always thought it was so much faster...I fell in love with this piece after hearing the Christoph Poppen recording.

  • Right arm !

  • I kinda started to sway which means u kept it dance like, which is cool, lol, the echoness was a little much but thats not really your fault...good stuff!

  • damn. this makes me sound like hell

  • I think that he covered it like itzhak perlman :D

  • good phrasing :)

  • this not a concerto, a partita for sure. And the 1st movement should be "moderate", not like this kind. Many famous violinists( even include Perlman) played very fast. In my opinion, if you play like this you'll lose a sense of this beautiful piece

  • Didn't you know that your interpretation is only well liked if you're famous? ;) Seriously though, great job.

  • I just watched this again and remain mesmerized by your interpretation...any concerts coming up? I might be in Scotland soon. Anyway more videos would be nice :)

  • I think it is a "moderate tempo", not "allegro"

  • @toantuoitho Couldn't agree more this piece should be played slower.

  • @feydust Thanks for your comment. See my most recent response to toantuoitho for more info - the 4/4 pulse I play with here actually is very moderato if you focus on it and I feel if anything space should be reserved for the Sarabande. A lot of the notes in the 1st movement are passing and auxiliary notes, but I use the harmony as a basis for my direction. All the best from Scotland.

  • @skuuzii Have you heard Heifetz's recording of this? Compared to his, this sounds moderate. Nice job on keeping tempo!

  • @toantuoitho @toantuoitho Thanks for your comment. If you follow the 4/4 beats you will realise that I am actually playing at a moderate tempo. If you try to walk to those beats, you will find you are walking quite slowly (Andante - walking pace). I think you may be distracting from the pulse by hearing the semiquavers. An Allemande must have a sense of direction and movement, I prefer to leave any romanticisms or languishing to the following Sarabande. All the best from Scotland.

  • sich b e a u t i f u l music ... well played

  • @MusicPredominates Bach is great, I love playing it :)

  • Very nice!

  • @thibautadavy Thanks! :)

  • Good sound, good intonation! I liked it!

  • @TheTucsonJeff thankyou very much :-)

  • Mind you, I am giving you my opinion from a basis of playing bach partitas on organ, piano, violin and bassoon so my view is going to be clouded by sound production of the differing instruments.

May I suggest for a more accurate edition of Bach, use Peters edition, I find urtext better for Beethoven but not so useful for Bach. Also, read CPE's analysis on JS's works. That helped me a lot!

  • You can repeat the B section actually, it's not on all editions, but it would mean there would be more to listen to, and your playing is beautiful enough to hear more!

Thank you for giving me the context of it with the Sarabande.

When I said slower I wasn't talking dramatically, that was why I put a smidge. On my edition it says 45 a crotchet which is slower than moderato. You are very right about the feel, I was thinking really the slightest bit slower, nothing dramatic!

  • Beautiful tone mate. agree with ajewel91 very smooth shifting!

I'd ask you to take a look at the metronome mark, lots of people of the 21st century take Bach just that smidge too fast. Sure it is a lilting pace, but they did not have racing cars in that day so don't try to rush it, the courtiers could not dance that quick with those massive renaissance dresses!

The second half seemed to settle better than the first. Great work, you left me wanting that extra repeat!!!

  • @Jessmantha Hi there! :) In the urtext edition of any of the Bach sonatas/partitas there is no metronome mark. An allemande is a moderate-speed dance for introductory movts as opposed to slow middle movts. If the beat is felt in crotchet beats, the resulting tempo is moderato. I feel that if this was played slower it would lose momentum, progression and shape. Remember this movt is followed by a Sarabande, one of Bach's slowest movts. Which extra repeat do you mean? Cheers, Daniel

  • @Jessmantha ENVIDIOSA!!

  • You play beautifully, I like to play it slower though. Maybe someday I will have the nerve to post here, but with all the great people playing on youtube I am intimidated. You are yet another one who plays so well it gives me pause. Best of luck and thanks for posting

  • dude, watching you play is memorizing. your left hand is so fluid and graceful. what beautiful shifts! i'm totally jealous of your mad skills.

  • thankyou so much, i really appreciate that, Daniel

  • la vera diteggiatura è piu difficile!

  • very nice. i am playing this piece for my college auditions and by hearing you play it helps. i think your movement enhances the piece :)

    God bless <333

  • nice work but its in F but still very nice

  • Many thanks for your comment. I am playing from the Urtext edition of Bach's partitas based directly on Bach's original manuscript. The key which I am playing in is the correct authentic key for this piece. All the best from Scotland and Merry Christmas to all, Daniel

  • You make it look effortless.

  • Thankyou very much, cheers :-)

  • Nice work man, very good

  • Many thanks buddy, all the best :-)

  • *ugh* I can't paste the address here to the video of a guy that does the vibratos when he can and imprints force and accents on passages that should be quite forceful. And he doesn't sound like he's 'running'. Not perfect though (someone comparable to your level), with some notes off pitch and other flaws.

I'm not trying to be over critical. You did a great job. But you won't improve solely on positive comments right?

    :)

[Will see if I can paste the video as "video response"].

  • Hm, couldn't. Just browse for the following in the youtube search bar: J. S. Bach Partita No. 2 in D minor Mov. 1 & 2, it's a dorky looking guy with glasses.

[At least you're a thousand fold better looking ;) haha].

  • Hi there, thanks for your comments. I personally believe that an Allemand needs movement and flow to work well. There are various other dances surrounding this one in the partitas which are more reflective and backward-leaning. I also dont like to use too much vibrato as it doesnt suit the Baroque style. When it comes to Bach, I much prefer Rachael Podger to Menuhin for example

  • When this video was recorded, I was studying at a conservatoire and I am now a full time professional violinist. All the best from Scotland, cheers, Daniel

  • @skuuzii It would be rather interesting to have you re-record this piece two years later to see how you have progressed. I'm currently working on this piece and it's so hard, not from a technical standpoint but you know what I mean. It's like a prayer...

  • Sounds like a good idea - may well do this at some point. I would suspect now I would play it in an even more Baroque style, although I enjoyed playing it in this video and i'm fairly happy. Will soon upload some new videos of other pieces. Best wishes from Scotland, Daniel :-)

  • this was amazing. i love you

  • thankyou so much, thats very kind of you. love from Scotland :-)

  • great pitch. i dont know, but for some reason i had a hard time finding any ammature videos that are even remotley in tune, but this is beautiful. great job! and beautiful pitch!

  • thankyou very much for your support, cheers! Daniel

  • very nice

  • Thanks! :)

  • He played very well! I'm playing this for an audition:D Hope I can play it half as well as he did... Lol, you can see my previous attempts.... Kinda bad. Daniel, you are one talented guy!

  • Thanks a lot, I hope your audition went well, im sure you did great! All the very best :)

  • Thanks!

  • playing was great?but i don"t your right hand..

  • Hi and thanks! I actually filmed this in a small room with my mobile phone so found it hard to fit everything in onto the camera. Will post new videos soon though, Daniel :)

  • very well done Daniel!

  • thankyou very much!

  • very well done.

  • cheers!

  • Great job!!!!

  • :D thanks

  • I play violin too. Nice use of all sections of the bow.

  • Many many thanks. Bow compliments are always twice as nice :) all the best

  • This really is excellent!

  • agreed!

  • :))

  • Thanks! ;)

  • I hated the echo, but playing was great !

  • It was recorded at music college in practice rooms so the acoustic isn't ideal but probably better than if it was completely dry. Glad you liked it and thanks! :)

  • I like your tone :)

  • Thanks a lot :D

  • How did the audition go? You play it very beautifully. And also with a lot of your own character, in my opinion. That's what makes it better. It is one of my favorites too, prefer to listen to the first four parts of the second partita than to the Chaconne, often. Good luck to you, thanks for posting.

  • Thankyou very much. Hopefully I'll post the Chaconne up at some point, but I must agree - I enjoy playing this more. Bach is great :)

  • Bach Indeed Is Great ^^ :D

  • I'm playing this too x) good perfomance =)

  • :) thankyou

  • very good performance :) i too know the piece and its good that you dont all in one speed as it sounds too robotic...(happened to me xD) but examiner told me so i corrected immediately :P

    anyways good performance :)

  • thanks a lot, cheers from Scotland!

  • You have a beautiful interprtation:) Not too slow, not too fast.

  • Thankyou very much :

  • Well done. Any imperfections in intonation will of course disappear over time. Only heard a few that were mostly sharp. Can we tune in for the next part soon? I favorited your video. Keep up the great work. Fun, ain't it?

  • =O Beautiful!

  • I saw you favourited my video - thankyou so much, that means a lot. Best wishes!

  • Excellent. : )

  • thanks so much; i'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • I love your phrasing and your tone. And your intonation is basically perfect all the way through except for a few minor spots. It was excellently done. A suggestion that might make it a little better. On the second part try making some of your single sixteenth notes a little more connected and not quite as short. I loved it!

  • Thanks a lot. Yes direction harmonically and melodically is important. It's hard to balance the need for space with the need for connection. Hopefully I'll upload more stuff as soon as possible as I posted this essentially as a test video about 1 year ago. Many thanks again =D

  • Finally someone else plays this in 1st position. I felt foolish doing it.lol Going to use this to audition for boyer music school. Very well done. =)

  • There is no need to overcomplicate fingering as it gets in the way of the music. It is Baroque so uneccesary shifts are inappropriate. Good luck with your audition and thanks.

  • I'm probably going to play this for my college audition this year. I still have a lot of work to do. I really like your tone.

  • Thanks a lot. The acoustic helped with the tone - Bach doesn't sound good in a dry room.

  • That's really good...wow. I learned the notes in one day but the musicality is hard, yeah...I'm having troubles with the phrasing and stuff. Great job!

  • Hi! Yes, technically it is no problem but musically it is difficult to keep it interesting

  • wow.. im planning on playing this for my college audition too... hope i can make it =D

Your playing of this piece is really well.

  • Thankyou very much. It was for an audition I did whilst at college and is a also a useful and calming addition to a recital programme.

  • Wow, I play violon too but not this good

I'm kind of busy on the piano and flute

but I think I'll work on violin now

    Thanks- Merci Beaucoup!!

  • Hey, I play flute too! Thankyou very much and good luck with your playing!

  • Such a beautiful piece, yet such a simple piece.... its easy to learn, you barely ever move out of the first hand position, but it takes heart to fully express the music properly and to play the music properly... Sweet!!

  • Thankyou! Yes - technically the piece isn't demanding but musically it is a difficult one. There are so many voices and ideas. I'm glad you enjoyed it!

  • thanks, keep it up, ill be using your video to perfect the piece myself, ive got the first page easily now i need to do the rest

  • When I play this piece, I switch in between first and whatever other positions there are... I learned it by ear so I have no clue what the positions are... Lol, kinda sad...

  • Hey! I use mostly 1st position apart from a couple of bars of 3rd and occasionally 2nd to help with string crossing. Best of luck with your playing and thanks.

  • HA ha ha... Ok. When will new videos be posted???

  • I'm trying to properly emote this wonderful structure of Bach's on the classical guitar right now. Thank you SO MUCH for the immense pleasure of hearing you play!

  • great ;

  • Thankyou very much - i'm glad you enjoyed it! More to come very soon...

  • i wish i could play like that

then i would actually try auditioning

  • Hey! How long have you been playing the violin? The more auditions etc you do the better - it's always worth a shot! This piece isn't too hard technically - it's the style that I find hardest. Best of luck with your violin playing - keep practicing! =D

  • Merci Beaucoup! Thank you very much

    I'll give it a shot

  • I've never thought of it that way, you definitely achieved that. Just be sure to put more fluidity in your bow hand. Let it bend a little and your playing will improve tenfold. Not saying it isn't good, it's wonderful! I hope I can play that well someday...

  • Hello,

you play this piece very fantastic:)

    Im enthused by your plaing.

  • Thankyou so much for your kind comment - i'm glad you enjoyed it! It is one of my favourite Bach movements. I will hopefully upload more soon.

  • Hi*^_^* I'm korean people and middle school 2 student I'm 15years old (sorry I'm not english very well)my dream is violinst violin start is 4 tears old nice meet you!

    see again!

    p.s

your violin playing is very well

  • Hello and thankyou very much! I'm 21 and have been playing since I was 6 years old. I love playing Bach on the violin. Good luck with your playing!

  • nice.. but lets see the left hand fingerwork next time?

  • Hi, yes i'm sorry about that. I was filming from the camera on my mobile phone so was very difficult to capture everything. Next time I will try to get the left hand in. I'm glad you enjoyed it, many thanks!

  • i'm studing this partita right now and i think you are very good playing it!

    Kisses from Spain

  • Thankyou so much - i'm glad you like it.

Best of luck with your own playing!

  • mu bien

  • Very very nice!

  • Very nice indeed! Very, very nice. Use a little more fluidity in your bow arm, though... Other than that, there is nothing more I need to say. You are very talented, and I can only hope that I can play this piece as lovely as you do someday. Congratulations!

    Mae

  • Good job, but no rushing necessary. This is one of those pieces that demand a lot of emotion, and you have accomplished that. Congratulations but don't be afraid to take your time. Very nice job!

  • vibratto???

  • With this piece in particular, the faster you play it, the less you will be able to really use vibrato. I'm not saying it's IMPOSSIBLE, just not as easy. You don't want to "force" it, thew it virtually ruins a piece. I think Daniel did a very nice job, considering he didn't implement much vibrato, yet he achieved the emotion that this piece demands. Bravissimo, Daniel. Très Magnifique!

  • My thoughts exactly hehe. I might try to experiment with the vibrato more but I dont want to distract from the harmony etc. Thanks for your many kind comments :)

  • Rachel Podger did a recording of this piece that was incredible, and she used absolutely no vibrato at all!

  • Yes her recording is excellent, as is Yehudi Menuhin's where he uses loads of vibrato. It can be good either way. Many thanks for your comment.

  • bravo

  • Many thanks - i'm glad you enjoyed my playing

  • Very nice. You look so comfortable playing your instrument, unlike myself, haha. At some points, even, you facial expressions look like your body is performing the piece and you're just along for the ride. Not an easy task to look so natural.

  • Thankyou very much - I do my best and try to enjoy myself. Good luck with your violin playing, keep in touch!

  • Any chance we could get a recording of the Ciaconna?

  • I am planning to study the Ciaconna starting in 2 weeks so hopefully I can upload a section to start with. It is a good challenge but also great fun! =)

  • It is. My grandfather bought the sonatas and partitas for me because he wanted me to learn the Ciaconna. Can't say I've made any remarkable progress, haha

  • Hehe, it seems to be the one people recognise most quickly. My Dad actually has it as his mobile ringtone and it annoys the hell out of his colleagues haha. One of my favourite versions is by Viviane Hagner who isn't well-known but is fantastic. It will be hard but I really should stop putting it off!

  • Great video showing off your skills/super human powers nicely. I am no expert musician but that sounded flawless, absolutely flawless, like no other.

The black and white seems to fit into the video properly with no distracting special effects, just you and the music. An example of what all music videos should be like.

My eyes and ears are delightfully anticipating your next instalments so subscribed I am.
