Agreeing with the last poster, giving polite directives to children is necessary and Black children, like most children, will respond to polite requests; however, teachers must be authoritative and assertive when giving directions to children. Teachers cannot come across as though they are intimidated and frightened by children, regardless of the children's races and cultures.

If they come from housing porjects or poorer neighborhoods, maybe they prefer a more direct manner as opposed to polite middle class methods.
