The "Paczki Day Eating Contest" winner was a guy named Matthew Hollowicki. One of my former classmates had the same name. I wonder if it's him? Does anybody know if the Mr. Hollowicki in this vid went to Saint Robert Bellarmine school in Redford, Michigan during the late 1970's?
@TheDebillos Um hmm well the tradition started here in America because of immigrants from Poland. Many Polish descendants, like myself, still part take in the Fat Tuesday tradition.Other cultures that make up America decided to part take in it because they realized that hey Paczki's are awesome! So to say that Americans soon will destroy a Polish Fat Tuesday tradition is really really unheard of since it was not true Americans (Native Americans) who came up with the tradition.
I was born above my Busia's bakery shop - the White Eagle Bakery - Piekarnia Białego Orła - in Dunkrk, NY. I grew up at the bakery and enjoyed eating a variety of Polish-ethnic baked goods during many different holidays over the years. The bakery has closed but the memories linger on. Thanks for posting this wonderful video.
The interviewer seems to be hung up on the 435 calories and 25 g of fat. The purpose of the paczki was to rid the kitchen of all the sweets before Lent so they wouldn't go to waste. Once you ate the paczki, on Fat Tueday, you fasted and abstained for the 40 days of Lent.
Nowadays, people eat the Paczki, but don't follow the fasting tradition afterwards.
