@mangaqueen1243 I think Oswald was the first cartoon character to have an interspieces relationship. He started out with a female rabbit named Fanny in the earliest Oswald cartoons, but she was replaced with a female cat, Ortensia a year later as Oswald's new official girlfriend. Don't know why Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks decided to replaced Fanny with Ortensia the cat?

Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks created Oswald, but a year later they've lost the rights of the characters by the evil douchebag, Charles Mintz. So, they created Mickey Mouse as their new star. There been Oswald created after Disney and Iwerks left Universal under Walter Lantz's control since 1929.

@DoctorExplosion That's not Felix. That's Ortensia. She was created by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks around 1928. She replaced Fanny (who is a rabbit) as Oswald's girlfriend.

@ScienceManComics They may originally meant to put a hurdy gurdy in the cartoon, but probably it was way too hard and complex to draw, so drew an organ grinder instead because it's a lot easier to draw, but the title "Hurdy Gurdy" got stuck for this cartoon.

I absolutely love the backgrounds of these early Lantz Oswalds. The crooked skyscrapers and "broken" urban landscapes are especially evocative of the settings seen in 1920s German Expressionist films like "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." I'm not sure if Lantz, Nolan, and their crew were inspired by them, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were.

@TJandChey When Disney asked his distributor, Charles Mintz, to increase the budget on the Oswald shorts, Mintz not only rejected his request but also gave him an ultimatum: either Disney would agree to a cut in the budget or he would be cut out of the production process.

Disney refused to take the cut and Mintz took Oswald and most of his staff away from him. After this, Disney, together with loyal friend Ub Iwerks, went on to create Mickey Mouse.

Mintz himself was cut out of the production process by Universal in 1929 when Carl Laemmle decided to have the Oswald shorts produced directly on the Universal lot. The 30-year-old Walter Lantz then assumed control of Oswald and the new Universal animation studio. Years later, Lantz would claim that he ultimately obtained this position after beating Laemmle at a poker game. Naturally, Oswald was the prize --- talk about being a "lucky" rabbit!

@filmman89 Their was also a rare letter written by Walt Disney with the only picture of both Mickey & Oswald that was sent to Carl & Walter. In 2006 Disney got Oswald back and he makes his redebut on Epic Mickey.

These early Oswald cartoons are fantastic! They're a bit cruder that what Disney was doing at the time, but man, they more than make up for that with great characterizations and snappy sense of humor.
