  • I... Wha... It just... He...

    HOW?

  • I find this technically utterly mind-boggling yet musically uninteresting.

  • @NeosimianSapiens

Totally understanding your reaction. People who post this stuff don't understand they do Shawn a dis-service, because people who see this think he's nothing but shred. Yet, he was SO able to make actual music as well. I mailed with Richard Hallebeek, who worked with Shawn, and Shawn told him he wanted to go back to composed music. Also, there's an interview on the Hallebeek website in which Shawn says about this era you see here: "I don't play like that anymore".

  • @megalodonNL Thank you for your informative answer and moderate tone!

  • @megalodonNL Except it does do a service to those of us who find the art in shredding and appreciate it for the skill, rather than the composition. Music should be a bit more fun than people decide to believe.

  • Seriously, mad skills mean nothing if it doesn't sound good >.< The constant note changes honestly sounds awful to me.

  • Waiting to see who's going to be able to cover what happened up there..

  • The sad part is NOBODY pays attention to the amazing drumming going on in the background.

  • ALL! of! the famous guitarist! would see him in memphis!

  • shawn lane makes me smile everytime i watch his video..rest in peace shawn and the world of shred will always be with you wherever you are..

  • @xXPsychoTempusXx

I think you mean that Shawn will be with the world of shred wherever it is.

  • sounds like dogshit...abstract wankage trash

  • @kbrinson85

    @MonopolyRsv

listen to his music. this is more for the intent to impress people, but his music will do that anyways. don't make the same mistake i did when i first heard buckethead and assume that all this guy does is shred.

    watch?v=aVRmJm9zEdo&feature=related

    watch?v=AewrEDYIDVM

just a starting point. shawn is a musical genius in every possible way.

  • This dude sucks dick. Deserves some sweet chin music with my got damn shit-stained left boot.

  • I'M DROWNING IN A SEA OF REVERB.

Honestly, the sad part is it sounds like he doesn't need it.

  • @6:32

  • Sounds like shit

  • I don't mean to bring in a different genre, but do you guys think that Jeff Loomis could do this?

  • @bearfeymous

absolutely not. jeff loomis' maximum picking speed is around 13 nps which actually is very weak. jeff couldn't even legato this.

  • Really good but no offense, it dosent sound 'nice' :$

  • Starts off wanting to be Holdsworth...and then fails.

  • This does sound inferior to music by slower guitarists.Speed isn't everything.

  • It's like this...If you are watching a "Shawn Lane - Solo" then expect a SHAWN LANE solo, know what I'm saying?

  • @Whyrendog Yes I do know what you're saying: squat:)

  • not really melodically musical, but it DOES convey frenetic emotional intensity

    oh yea...and stupidly inhuman technique.

  • ugh, this just sucks. wow, you can play fast. good job. how about playing some fucking music?

  • @manofsuds7

this is music. you just don't get it. not all music is the same.

  • anyone else bored with shredding ???

  • wow, I never thought I'd be this bored by a competent guitarist's solo. From a technical stand point he's flawless, but there is not an ounce of soul in this video. This is what victor wooten meant when he said, "if you stop playing every once in a while, music might fall out."

  • @notsqueegi couldn't agree more. and that quote you included is awesome.

  • and then somebody says that rusty cooley is as fast as or faster than shawn lane. Motherfucker, that shit on 0:53 to 1:00 is untouchable.....you will never be able to play that shit. maybe not even then..period.

  • @jimmyleppard6 +1,000,000

  • this guy is extremely fast. thats about it from what i am hearing. he can run scales like a m effer but I need to hear something else. I had never heard of him before- i see his video is mostly associated with very fast guitar videos.

  • @projectobject411 look up epilogue for lisa or death theme.

  • 3:21 at last the guitar survied.. Phew!!!!!!!

  • this is music because he is playing these things called notes you fucktard

  • y do these utube ppl always argue and compare guitarists? not one comment worth reading! seriously ppl, who fucking cares or gives two shits about your opinions just shut the f up and enjoy music take it for what it is!

  • come on guys, admit it, this is just musical crap.

  • @BarriosGroupie In relation to what?

  • @Kingding6 in relation to what someone like Malmsteen or Vinnie Moore has composed.

  • @BarriosGroupie your gonna tell me that malmsteen and Moore are more accomplished guitarists than Lane?

  • @Kingding6 Lane is more accomplished technically. He's like Alan Holdsworth in being fixated on techique and hence incapable of composing anything musical.

  • @BarriosGroupie Man your obviously not familiar with his work if you do not think he is musical. Powers Of Ten and Tri Tone are both fantastic composational albums. His work with Jonas Hellborg and Indian music was incredible. Familiarize yourself with his stuff before you call him unmusical.

  • @BarriosGroupie this is your opinion ? I admired Holdsworth always because of his tone , his sound, his harmonies, his compositions, his unique style. He uses his technique as a means to create those unique sounds.

  • @BarriosGroupie Sorry man, can't tell me it isn't music or is music.

  • I saw a guitar which looked just like that in a guitar shop a few months ago, it was a Vigier Exalibur I think and all I could think of was 'holy crap Shawn Lane guitar!'

  • 2:00 gives me the chills right down to my toes, o my gosh

  • reminds me of holdsworth!!

  • @davtones shawn lane was an admirer of allan holdsworth

  • Perhaps the greatest guitar ever made

Played by the greatest guitarist ever!!!

    It's perfect!!!

  • Fingers.......Spiders......Sound.....Jesus.....Christ.....10101110100101010101000101010101000101011101011110100100100101010100101001101010111011010100001101 *DEATH*

  • If you need a tab for this you have not even tried to research and learn Shawn Lane's style. Each part I know what he is doing but of course the the T is impossible since he improvising the same approach.

Knowing is fun, but of course to execute it with such ease is another thing. Some guitars wouldn't even have the set-up to do half of this "moves" in this clip.

  • i doubt della vega can top this

  • @yoitzrichard della vega sucks if compared with shawn lane...

  • sweet im eleven and in a few years i could drum like shawn lane

  • @blackoutbeast12 shawn lane is the guitarist...LOL

  • @davidegol LOL my bad

  • Comment removed

  • JESUS TAPDANCING CHRIST!!!!

  • Yeah, but Herman Li still pwns him lol

  • @Emil315 oh really?? herman li can only play in one style, shawn is an all around player.. shawn is lightyears better than herman li..

  • @LuigiTheGreat05 I was being sarcastic haha xD

First of all, if speed makes a better guitarist, Shawn Lane has already won, also, he's more diverse, better tone, musicianship, creativity etc. Not putting Li down as I think he's got a couple of good songs tho

  • Shawn Lane was on Par with Mozart in terms of musical genuis

  • Something had to have happened... either he held The Infinity Gauntlet or he was granted the Power Cosmic... but this is clearly Super-human!!!

  • i actually think this is beautiful. i've heard/played a fair share of bullshit shredding, and i think this is beyond any of that with not only the speed he's playing at but the creativity behind every single lick he plays from second to second.

    absolutely untouchable

  • Shawn was not from this world, guess that's why he left us so soon. All you can say is OMG WOW!!!!

  • A great example of a 27/32 time signature in Lanetissimo.

Lane Dose not write music...the music write's it's self's out of fear.

  • nonsense ! the drummer is playing on "pulse"

  • Anyone got tabs?

    lol just kidding.

  • hahahahahahaah

  • @nado117

    haha good one

  • hmmmmmmm

    he plays so fast. . . .

    but it isnt beautiful. .

  • Shawn was so melodic and then he could tear you up like this. I bet this video would piss malmsteen off! Shawn was/is the best. If I could bottle his talent...geez.

  • @chickenbaby12

    Talent, talent, talent, ...

First: We all love or like Shawn's playing, so don't let argue. ;)

But (!) it isn't all about talent. If Shawn would never had practiced hard, he also would never been that good. It's all hard work - not just some talent and wow, you can play like that!

Well - coooool playing btw!! ;P

  • "I have a freakish nervous system." ~ Shawn

  • Best Part : 0:00 to 6:32 (It took me 3 min of orgasm to realize that it was over)

  • I just got overkilled.

  • Freakshow- utter Masters of guitar and drums.

  • Hole Lee Crap....

I think I'll put my axe away now.......heck forever.

I have a hand cramp just watching

    What an icon.... RIP Shawn!

  • screw tabbing - you fail epically!

  • "can u tab lightning??"

    LMAO!

Yeah Shawn is a guru. Honestly with his technique, creativity, and soul, I might say he is up there with being the best guitarist to live.

    RIP Shawn

  • @rrescozoo5 I'm sorry, where's the soul there? this sounds like a soul being mangled by a black hole.

  • @manofsuds7 Your parameters of the definition of 'soul' need reshifting. This sounds alien to me and aliens have souls too. ;)

  • he has a sexy reverb going

  • i´m speechless

  • HOLY CRAP!

  • Is that a McNought guitar he's playing? (McNaught?)

  • looks like a prs to me

  • It's a custom Ibanez Ghostrider.

  • an ibanez ghostider maybe they should have called is the lighteningrider but anyways.

  • i had the priveledge of knowing Shawn and seeing him play in the 80's when he was playing with the Willys. There is no trick to this stuff, and if it looks like he is playing every note as apposed to legato its because he is. in the first part of this solo you can see that he is actually finger picking some of it. He was a very humble and nice guy and will be missed. And there is alot more to his playing than shred.

  • MONSTERRRR.....!!!!!

  • holdsworth + paganini or something

  • can anyone tab this please

  • who the hell would be able to tab this?

  • r u kidding? first its not good quality. second his finger are like lightning. can u tab lightning??

  • maybe its just somethingl ike 1234454657568323526853241537584698604789356141, for the first lick, i dunno :P

  • You can't, the tab would BUURRNN :D

  • this is so wild

  • The only thing thats awful, is your taste in music... the song by therion in your faves is the worst thing I've ever heard. Wow it's bad!

  • why don't you watch his other videos, read the title. it's a solo and most of his work isn't shred.

  • GENIUS = Shawn Lane.

  • tabs??? are you fucking serious, dude?!!?

it's not possible to put this brilliant shit into tabs.

  • ... I'm going to give it a try :D

  • Can someone try to do the tab of the part at 00:53 ?

  • If you can find Shawn Lane's Power Licks & Solos book online -- I forgot where I DL'ed it from -- it tabs what is basically the pattern he's doing, i.e. the wide-interval playing. There is also a video called something like Shawn Lane technique which shows how the pattern is played slowly.

  • Thanks, but I know that and he doesn't tell this lick. And there, the stretch looks bigger than the ones he show.

  • It's a legato augmented lick. 14-18-22, 15-19-23, 13-17-21, and thus forth. Absolutely sick, isn't it?

  • The notes looks real, but are you sure it's legato? His right hand is a little fast for legato...But after all, it's Shawn Lane.

  • Actually...wait...watch his picking hand...he's alternate picking all of that *holds head in hands, starts crying*

  • But it is easy. After all, 20,5 notes per second is slow. All what you need to do is to practise 1 or 2 hours, and then to not throw your guitar by the windows because it's a little fast, after all.

  • 'Hmm...let's try this...14, 18, 22, ...yeaaah, I got it! Awesome!' *plays back video* WOOPWOOPWOWOOPWOOP ........'oh FUCK'

  • The most amazing is the alternate thing, because it's easy in legato... Anyways, I'm gonna Tab this part with a video I found that I will slow down.

  • verga de bolas

  • doesnt that translate to dick of balls?

  • I watch this video regularly. It blows my mind every time. Take me to Uranus and back please Shawn. It's like fine wine meets sour candy. Reality melting.

  • When did they start making Ibanez flame retardant?!

  • 0:53 is the part where it starts to make me wanna give up and sell my guitar lol

  • Totally insane guitar freak!!!!!!!!! Amazing.

  • So sick

  • Sounds like he taught Rusty to play, but Rusty is just a tribute player at best.

  • Rusty was crazy for Shawn and he will tell you himself. See the video: SHAWN LANE TRIBUTE... Rusty speaks at 3:13... MAB is at 10:40... also G. Howe, P. Gilbert, G. Govan, Buckethead, Timmons, Masi...

  • rofl too fast

  • lol funny explanation

  • 2:00 ... fuck yeah

  • everyone who watches this should feel inadequate about their own guitar playing haha. I've started learning some of his songs just to build on technique; it definately works...studying from shawn's playing is the best thing i've ever done.

  • Most flawless. guitar. technique. EVER.

    R.I.P. Shawn.

  • This is music.

  • This is the opinion of one who has favorited snoop dogg, weezer, and guns-n-roses... this music is technical and not at all your style... I feel sad for you!

  • He has really short fingers, yet he owns that thing like a Dragunov would own a target 20 metres away...

  • :50-1:00 sounds scary and looks frightening

  • i feel cheap and dirty after that. did i just get molested via guitar solo?

  • Theres 4 levels of guitar players.

    Begginer

    Intermediate

    Pro

    and then theres...

    Shawn Lane!

  • @KARN1V4L

to be technically correct it goes like this:

    beginner

    intermediate

    pro

    master

    buckethead

    shawn lane

  • this might be the fastest I've heard Shawn play ... and it also may be the most technical show of skill I've ever seen on electric guitar. I dont think any of the G3 or Shrapnel guys currently running could play these licks.

    R.I.P. Shawn.

  • Thats a fact,Though Vai is my fav,Lane is my musical God.And even Gilbert said that when he was doing the Racerx thing Shawn was doing things way beyond anything they were doing..Thats incredable in itself,,,RIP Shawn..

  • exactly my thoughts, in speed and precision he had the power to blow even the G3 away, but did he have the capacity to do the same things in 19/8 time and fast changing cadences ? I am not this sure. but anyway, one of the greatest guitar-players ! R.I.P.Shawn

  • Oh, definately. Check out Tri7/5 or his Piano Concertina.

The guy knew music, he's not just some 3000bpm exercise nut. :P

  • Should I turn on the hot water before or after I ritually cut my wrist's,W.T.F. I FEEL SICK INSIDE

  • some people will hear this and their barins will ooze out of their ears in liquid form cause its so fast

  • this is the best guitar shred i ever see!

  • There is not supposed to be feeling, it is supposed to sound outside the box and weird.

Look up Shawn Lane Once Upon a Time in the West, that is real feeling

  • Some simply cannot comprehend... thats how I know it's GREAT!!! rip MASTER

  • You fucking kick ass man :D my point of view exactly!

  • that was string skipping alll the way through it may have sounded and sometimes looked liked sweep but string it was string skipping. i love this improv amazes me every time

  • Loads of diminished sweeps

  • insane 1:38

  • technically great. would say it was technically impossible if i hadn't seen it. but endless shredding just sounds like noise to me.

  • that shreds so hard it just makes you want go fight fedor emilianenko...with absolutely no training...

  • geez this this still gives me the same impact from when i first seen this

*JawDropping* Shawn Lane is the Reason why Grunge took over in the 90s

those who saw this was like "gah whats the point! its impossible to get up to Lane Level" and thus Teen Spirit was born =D

(it was a joke so please dont hammer me with billions of replys)

  • Haha!!

    So true!

He has the opposite effect on me though. I just want to play even more.

What an amazing inspiration Shawn Lane is!

  • HE WROTE THE BOOK!!!

  • I agree, this video is just Shawn showing off.

  • WHAT THE >> how can he play Fusion a that speed ???!!

  • kill me if im not already dead cause i think my brain just exploded

  • This sounds like John Coltrane having the worst nightmare ever ^^ Unbelieveable. After Zappa Shawn Lane is my newest inspiration !

  • a live improv*

  • Just unbelievable!!!

  • 3:14

    hybrid picking at that speed!

  • Well noticed! That's crazy.
