Totally understanding your reaction. People who post this stuff don't understand they do Shawn a dis-service, because people who see this think he's nothing but shred. just a starting point. shawn is a musical genius in every possible way.
wow, I never thought I'd be this bored by a competent guitarist's solo. From a technical stand point he's flawless, but there is not an ounce of soul in this video. This is what victor wooten meant when he said, "if you stop playing every once in a while, music might fall out."
and then somebody says that rusty cooley is as fast as or faster than shawn lane. Motherfucker, that shit on 0:53 to 1:00 is untouchable.....you will never be able to play that shit. maybe not even then..period.
this guy is extremely fast. thats about it from what i am hearing. he can run scales like a m effer but I need to hear something else. I had never heard of him before- i see his video is mostly associated with very fast guitar videos.
y do these utube ppl always argue and compare guitarists? not one comment worth reading! seriously ppl, who fucking cares or gives two shits about your opinions just shut the f up and enjoy music take it for what it is!
@Kingding6 Lane is more accomplished technically. He's like Alan Holdsworth in being fixated on techique and hence incapable of composing anything musical.
@BarriosGroupie Man your obviously not familiar with his work if you do not think he is musical. Powers Of Ten and Tri Tone are both fantastic composational albums. His work with Jonas Hellborg and Indian music was incredible. Familiarize yourself with his stuff before you call him unmusical.
@BarriosGroupie this is your opinion ? I admired Holdsworth always because of his tone , his sound, his harmonies, his compositions, his unique style. He uses his technique as a means to create those unique sounds.
I saw a guitar which looked just like that in a guitar shop a few months ago, it was a Vigier Exalibur I think and all I could think of was 'holy crap Shawn Lane guitar!'
If you need a tab for this you have not even tried to research and learn Shawn Lane's style. Each part I know what he is doing but of course the the T is impossible since he improvising the same approach.
Knowing is fun, but of course to execute it with such ease is another thing. Some guitars wouldn't even have the set-up to do half of this "moves" in this clip.
First of all, if speed makes a better guitarist, Shawn Lane has already won, also, he's more diverse, better tone, musicianship, creativity etc. Not putting Li down as I think he's got a couple of good songs tho
i actually think this is beautiful. i've heard/played a fair share of bullshit shredding, and i think this is beyond any of that with not only the speed he's playing at but the creativity behind every single lick he plays from second to second.
Shawn was so melodic and then he could tear you up like this. I bet this video would piss malmsteen off! Shawn was/is the best. If I could bottle his talent...geez.
First: We all love or like Shawn's playing, so don't let argue. ;)
But (!) it isn't all about talent. If Shawn would never had practiced hard, he also would never been that good. It's all hard work - not just some talent and wow, you can play like that!
i had the priveledge of knowing Shawn and seeing him play in the 80's when he was playing with the Willys. There is no trick to this stuff, and if it looks like he is playing every note as apposed to legato its because he is. in the first part of this solo you can see that he is actually finger picking some of it. He was a very humble and nice guy and will be missed. And there is alot more to his playing than shred.
If you can find Shawn Lane's Power Licks & Solos book online -- I forgot where I DL'ed it from -- it tabs what is basically the pattern he's doing, i.e. the wide-interval playing. There is also a video called something like Shawn Lane technique which shows how the pattern is played slowly.
But it is easy. After all, 20,5 notes per second is slow. All what you need to do is to practise 1 or 2 hours, and then to not throw your guitar by the windows because it's a little fast, after all.

Thanks, but I know that and he doesn't tell this lick. And there, the stretch looks bigger than the ones he show.

Roflmop 2 years ago

Scratch47 2 years ago 3
But it is easy. After all, 20,5 notes per second is slow. All what you need to do is to practise 1 or 2 hours, and then to not throw your guitar by the windows because it's a little fast, after all.
