This is a rough outline of about 90% of Troper Tales:
This troper loves anime and speaks Gratuitous Japanese in everyday life. My diet consists of pocky and stale cheetos, and I spend most of my time watching Fan Dubs of obscure anime. When I'm not doing that, I read webcomics or Animorphs. My ideal galpal is a 18 year old, D-cup Tsundere who loves to cook and have sex. The BigBad of my life is a Jerk Jock who stole my lunch money in the 2nd grade! My fursona is a purple fox.
This page nearly made me ashamed to own a coat. I praise the Lord I never lived in any areas populated by these "badass" animu sperglords, and have only ever seen them worn by people who find them to be comfortable winter wear rather than cartoonish costumes.
You need a certain physique and facial structure to look good in a longcoat and any sort of hat, especially a fedora. What these chucklefucks don't get is that you also need to have charisma and presence to look cool in that getup. >_<
I have a friend who owns a beige trench coat. A bunch if us convinced him to wear it with shorts and a button-down undone halfway, so it can't be seen underneath when the coat is buttoned. We then went to Walmart and ten at night and freaked out all the clerks who thought he was a flasher.
I kind of wish Troper Tales wasn't dead so I could submit that.
Is it just me, or does the half-assed Psycho Mantis at :29 look like that douche that tried to teach Japanese and review Policenauts at the same time on Retsupurae.
I own one, because it's cold here and it's a goddamn good coat. I don't care about the social trappings, I care about staying warm. I'm honestly not sure which side of this debate is more pathetic.
Guy in my class wears a top hat and trenchcoat. Underneath, he wears a T-shirt with a Hot Topic slogan and jeans. Now, I don't judge, but every time I see the guy, I want to say "Look, you can't half-ass the Detective. Either lose some weight, get more sophisticated clothes and lose your girlfriend of five minutes in a tragic mafia conspiracy, or don't bother at all."
Oh sure, longcoats and stuff look badass in these tropers' favorite animes and fictional world, but it doesn't work so well in real life. In fact, it just makes you look like a fool.
I actually do have a longcoat like the ones these guys keep describing. I wear it in winter and keep it around because it has a lot of pockets. I wore a hat with it once or twice, but it's really nothing special. I don't see why these guys keep on sperging about it or why they seem to believe it makes them look like an anime character. Have you people never seen the costumes people wear at those anime conventions? These sorts of outfits were never meant to exist in real life.
It's not just black trenchcoats, I knew a guy in college, total tool who tried making a belted trenchcoat part of his daily wear, fedora optional. Call it the "IT guy who thinks he's dashing" look. I guess he was going for a Bogart or Joel McCrea in Hitchcock's Foreign Correspondant look. Which is hard to pull off with a double chin and greasy perma-peachfuzz for facial hair.
I knew this complete tool who was an admitted /b/tard and looked like the most stereotypical nerd this side of Napoleon Dynamite, but he thought he was super badass with his SKATEBOARD and his BLACK TRENCHCOAT.
Basically, I hate this page that much more because I just know he's one of these egomaniacs.
Trench coats were never cool. No matter how many damn 90's comics you read, you will always look like a tool, they're like Ugg boots in that they're both ugly and no one should wear them
"So what does it matter that I am grossly out of shape, has a pimple filled face, greasy hair, several social retardations, no friends, and a weird smell? Wearing a trench coat will make me cool like Neo, rite guise?"
Pft, trenchcoats are so 90's. Ponchos are where it's at, bitches.

I would not call Hugh Hefner a badass. I would call him many things, but badass is not one of them.

Sadly, it's gotten so that only a few people can pull off wearing a trench coat without looking like a bad cosplayer...

@MrSexyRoland "Clubbed to Death" by Rob Dougan. It was used in the soundtrack of the Matrix, as the other replier said.

Trench coats are incredibly comfortable, but never make the mistake of calling yourself a "badass" outside of anything except self-parody.

Trench coats: an article of clothing with the unique power of looking BADASS in fiction, but pathetic/silly in real life.
