  • I actually really enjoyed this album, I was really into the songwriting and the instruments, I guess since I grew up listening to country, it's kind of engrained in my brain, always hated the songwriting of country though, it always seemed like just re-hashed things. But this obviously doesn't have that problem. Lol.

  • I'm not sure if you've done this yet (recent subscriber) but it's very helpful to have an installment explaining your numerical scores. You could give examples of high and low-scoring albums and explain the relation between your views of the album and the score given. The problem is that when people see "4/10" they imagine getting a 40 on a test.

I'd recommend doing away with scores altogether. You're very eloquent and you express yourself well enough without needing to quantify your tastes.

  • @lumburgapalooza He has a little article on his site called "why scores matter" where he explains why he refuses to stop giving scores. It's an interesting read

  • @liogarus

Cool, ty, will check it out.

  • I really liked Iron & Wine's newest album, though quite different from his other work, it is daring and different. It's good stuff! I have to agree that The Decemberists played it a little more safe this time around, but it's a return to their roots, for sure. Thanks for the review Mr. Fantano!

  • By far the most frightening review ever...

  • i loved your little convo with cal at the end

  • See, This album for me was amazing. This album brought me back as a fan. I had somehow skipped Hazards of Love somehow. I got this after seeing a full live performance on NPR. I instantly loved the songs. I enjoy the simplicity of the songs. Which is odd for me. I loved the song for his son and just the vibe. The alt country feel. and Hazards once I listened is amazing.

  • I think you'll find as you get older, what you look for in "pop" music will not be so regimented. I think when I was your age, sorry, I KNOW when I was your age, my criteria were very different.

  • I dont always agree with this guy. hell, i dont agree with him most of the time. But every album is not going to be a ten. and he rarely bashes an album. He uses his opinion to create as subjective of a review as possible. and that, i respect

  • I love your videos but this Iron and Wine review was poorly argumentated, like you overlooked the music material. The tracks go from rather underwhelming (I'd give you that) to memorably emotional. Like the ultimate song, "Your Fake Is Good for Me", which never cease to amaze as it grows, and grows, and the lyrics are becoming a trippy ritournelle. This actually gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, and it still does it.

  • Thanks for mentioning Ghost :D

  • Woops, I guess we were all idiots then like Cal Chuchesta for thinking that we could voice our opinion about an album. Sorry, that we could thought we could influnce someone else with our opinion, since your point of this video is that you can't change someone's mind. Poor Cal. Just because he wanted to talk ,you shouldn't have put him down. I somehow feel like you are saying the same things to your supportive audience that makes you 2 dollars a day.

  • @TROLLulzy lol. i think you missed it buddy. he is confronting the issue of people FREAKING out and getting mad at him when he gives a low score. he is just saying, "hey don't get mad at me this is just my opinion. and if you like this album AWESOME keep enjoying it." he has actually said that many many times in videos and in comment responses. :)

  • 6:02 = DERP!

  • I tripped balls at the end of this video.

  • myspace dot come slash armadale house - review us!

  • my space

  • hi

  • What is that album with the flowers on the cover??

  • @ToxicMayo9 It was "Power, Corruption, and Lies" by New Order

  • Have you never had your mind changed by a music discussion, Anthony?

  • tim and eric would be proud of this review

  • I always thought the point of the channel was for you to give positive reviews to all of my favourite albums and boost my ego.

  • Thanks for being civil, I loved hearing your point of view, though I am an extremely die-hard Decemberists fan, and I am in love with the King is Dead. The Hazards of Love was ground-breakingly amazing, but I'm glad they're going back to their roots. I would have given it at least a 7. What's up with the ending???

  • Everyone that watches The Needle Drop NEEDS to see this. Not should see this NEEDS to see this.

  • Please review Violeta, Violeta Vol 1 by Kaizers Orchestra :) !!!!

It is so awesome, and i think you would love it !!

  • what I dont like is the over compressed drums

  • I'm surprised you listen to country. I find it hard to get into, but I'm always trying to expand my musical tastes...any recommendations for good stuff?

  • @whobuiltthelove

not sure if you've heard of them, but the Flying Burrito Brothers was the first country band I loved. I think they're the first country band that a lot of people love. They were never so popular, but they were around back in the 60's. Make sure to get Gilded Palace of Sin. One of the main guys, Gram Parsons, was only around for that album. Chris Hillman was great too, but it was way better when both of them were together.

  • "I had no idea there was so much humor in the four basic food groups"

That make me laugh out loud

  • It's funny to watch the juveniles fall behind as the band grows. This more mature, very simple, eloquent poetry is hard for those who live in a constant need for distraction. Their most complete work to date. Major kudo's to this more elevated

    work.

  • 5:53 fuck yeah

  • 7:40 and on is 'EFFING HILARIOUS'

  • Wow, what a let down. I liked both the Crane Wife and the Hazzards of Love. I feel totally underwhelmed.

  • I saw coverkillernation review the Decemberists album when I first heard about this album

  • you have been watching tim and eric... its shows in your editing.. MUAHAHAH

  • 3 people are bananas.

  • As a Rhode Islander, you hit the nail on the head with the intro.

  • Anthony Fantano, lulz...4 eva.

  • Great video. I'd welcome you diving into the well of surrealist/uncomfortable humor more often.

  • actually it would be nice that you make a classic album review once in a while... oh yeah, and i love theneedledrop :)

  • You should review Sic Alps - Napa Asylum

  • Yo duuuuuude, what was that third classic album you showed after Kid A?

  • the end was like a david lynch movie

  • Probably the best NeedleDrop video yet.

  • thx guys i meant new order .. kid a i knew ;)

  • I drooled on myself during this review, just thought you should know.

  • Please review the new album from Gang of Four, "Content". I know you've shown your post-punk acumen with your appreciation for Wire's Pink Flag. Anyone who knows Go4 knows they are extremely inconsistent... does the new one get the seal of approval?

  • your best video so far. I nearly fell to the floor when you were laughting

  • saw these guys open for deathcab for cutie a few years ago, i wanted to check out more of their stuff but never got to it. i think i'll pick up a few of their albums.

  • Anthony (and Cal): Subjective opinion--for sure. People will disagree. BUT some people ONLY listen to new music (for whatever reason) and this is tragic. I'm sure there were dozens of people that gave Pink Flag a shot because of TND, and I don't think expecting, from time to time, a review of an old favorite that has helped shape current indie rock is "missing the point of the channel." You can do what you like, you're an excellent critic, but maybe you shouldn't have teased us with Pink Flag :)

  • Awesome review. I am a massive Decemberists fanatic, and I loved the album, but you make compelling points. I have to agree, actually, about the solos, especially the harmonica ones. Still, some of these songs have become some of my favorites, like Rox in the Box, June Hymn, This Is Why We Fight, etc.

  • mb dumb q but what is the record at 5:24 called ?

  • @0haxx "Power, Corruption & Lies" by New Order, released in 1983.

  • @0haxx Kid A by Radiohead. really great stuff

  • you should kill off cal...

  • Comment removed

  • Thanks for the review......I just saw a huge vinyl box set of this album in the record store $199.99 . I honestly can only think of about 10 albums I'd pay 200 dollars for. Let alone this one. As always, thanks Anthony.

  • One of the best reviews i've ever seen!!! Matter of fact it is one of the best youtube videos I have ever seen. Congrats Anthony, you are one of the most talented youtubers!!!

  • I'm thinking Hotel Shampoo by Gruff rhys

  • Your vids keep getting better! Not that they were ever bad but you can tell you're more confident in your editing

  • I'm feeling a light ten, to a strong ten on your reviewing skills

  • OMG. this is the best TND video I have ever watched. Ant, I <3 u bro. keep on doing what you do.

  • r u in a band

  • The ending might scare away new viewers.. just a thought. Gotta love it tho man.

  • @TheExplodingPanda if this was my first TND vid, I'd SUBSCRIBE because of that ending, d00d

  • I have gone to six flags and I'm riding the teacups.

  • the only reason I would bother you to review more aged albums is because there are so many albums out there that didn't get the life of day. BTW motorheads NEW ALBUM comes out february 8th here in the USA (yeah I was wrong about itbeing out in january)

  • YOU TELL EM!!!! no MORE CALLS FOR CLASSIC REVIEWS!!!!!!!

  • are your neighbours ever concerned about you standing out by a tree in the snow talking to yourself? also the editing at the end kinda blew my mind.

  • I'm feeling a 'Light 5'. I agree that I feel somewhat underwhelmed by the album. It isn't very dynamic, but hey! It has good continuity :P

  • Do you play any instruments yourself?

  • @theneedledrop O cool what do you play? and btw Ik its old but could you maybe do a review of Kid A by Radiohead?

  • Anthony this is one of your best videos by far, def a fav. This one and that MF Doom review where you spit FIYAAAA LOL....Yo! review "Gutter Rainbow" Talib Kweli..I hate snow too by the way!

  • As an ardent folkie, I disagree with your criticism of your kind is dead review, but I respect your review style and your opinion. On the other hand, you could not be more dead on with your I&W review. I love The writing, but I can't stand the overproduction and loss of intimacy.

  • Uh the end laughing part made me shard my pants!!!!

  • I love you too anthony... i love you too. Also this was astoundlingly funny.

  • Awesiems

  • little reference to Tim and Eric at the end it seemed. just a subtle one

  • why spending so much time apologizing for not liking some records ? no one's gonna beat you up (at least i won't)

  • This video is my favorite vizz in the history of intervuzz. I give it a solid banana bread out of domino.

  • The decemberists suck

  • @ourlocalscenesux you suck

  • Hell Yeah! Great Ending! "Have A Nice Day....For Ever" Thumps Up For Ever!

  • ha.....what

  • That felt like a TV episode.

  • gasp the decemberists and iron & wine in one video???? :)

i looked at this video and nearly peed with excitement

  • You are the #93 - Most Viewed (Today) - Gurus - Global.

  • that was some tim and eric shit

  • where's cal from? thats an interesting accent he's got

  • @hjbrinner CANADIA

  • What was the 3rd album when you were listing great albums?

  • @TheSpencePo Power, Corruption & Lies by New Order

  • Please review Orka Veer. More people need to know about this absolutely beautiful band.

  • dude

    snow is awesome

also I just noticed that Boris and Merzbow are putting new material (Klatter, 23 Feb)! Please review it?:)

  • Agreed, and I have requested classic albums in the past, but still thinks it's a good idea because I like seeing peoples opinions of things that are usually considered really good. Sometimes people surprise me.

For instance, I hate Abbey Road with my core.

  • david lynch guest producer??

  • @imdrinkingcement yes. :-)

  • @imdrinkingcement ha either him or tim & eric

  • You're hilarious sir, I love the creativity.

  • AMEN!

  • Best video yet? Maybe. I just hope this will drown out the pining for Pet Sounds. (Bearing in mind that I thoroughly enjoy that album.)

  • That video was brilliant in every way.

  • Lmao, one of your best reviews I've seen ;D Lolz.

  • What is the song you always play at the end?

  • @vegansong821 Just a short, little instrumental I wrote / recorded myself. :-)

  • @theneedledrop not trying to be rude, but its feels stolen from halleluia by leonard cohen a bit

  • You should review Gypsy & The Cat - Gilgamesh, not because I've been begging you, but because I'm demanding you.

  • dear Anthony.

    WHAT THE FUCK?

  • Put on the captions; Click "Transcribe Audio"; Click OK; Watch the subtitles and LOL.

  • Oh god, that was too much lulz. I mean fun.

  • Hey I took offense to the Six Flags comment I love the tea cups :p

  • @MyDinoLife248 I should have done a formal apology to fans of tea cups.

  • @theneedledrop hard to be rude to something so british and therefore polite as a teacup is

  • i think you are sexy with the stach and eyes

  • Great video ant. I wrote a giant comment last time about the point of TND. Also really funny stuff. Best video yet. keep it up.

  • CUT COPY!

  • Could you review the new Gang of Four album Content?

  • Anthony and Cal Awesome Review, Great Job!?

I'll say it again, review the new Sic Alps. You need more Drag City on your channel.

  • I feel like he's trying to tell us something...

    KID A <3

  • go into the future and review The Strokes: Angles

  • hahahahaha, this is by far Anthony's funniest review.

  • Duty Now for the Future is an awesome album.

  • Wonderful and I LOLed. This is such a great video :)

  • lol, what was that?

  • HILARIOUS!

  • you should do questions and answers video.

  • That was like a Tim and Eric on acid produced Needle Drop PSA. I like your channel and I like that your are taking a video to address a few common questions on the comments. However when you make a video that bizarre you give others the chance the grade you. And some times you...(Comment turns red voice gets scary) FAIL AT LIFE!!!!!

    k

  • damn, Anthony's blowing up

  • You should do a review in Memento style! that would be awesomeee

  • I hate tim & eric & cal chuchesta

  • I love watching these reviews with the CC on. XD for the most part, impeccable spoken english, but every once in a while a gem. ^_^ and i liked the actual review too!

  • Great job with the video. Got to be one of your best.

    Next review: Mogwai. O_O

  • review frankie and the heartstrings, and ice cream shout. -mach schnell!, prontissimmo!!

  • I really enjoyed the new Wanda Jackson LP. It was all covers, but probably the most aggressive covers album I've ever heard. I'd be interested to hear your take.

  • This video was AMAZING. Thank u. Always interested in new music and this channel is perfect for me. Thumbs upside. Review an album that might relax someone who is stressing over all this snow.

  • thank you for being you!

  • Keep it up, man.

    Right up.

  • DAMN RIGHT BITCH!

  • I love how Threecreation posts his reviews of the same album on your reviews. lol.

  • DAMN that ending was the scariest review ending ive ever seen... O.o

  • One of the very best man. Thank you.

  • Braids - Native Speaker

  • hahahaha that was one of the best reviews to date. seems the new decemberists album is getting highly mixed reactions at least from people and reviews i've seen.

  • hahahaha wow... thanks for the tangent to help silence all those who didnt really understand what the needledrop is all about. I heard some of that message within your recent interview on the blog. and I have to tell you that I really appreciate the effort and professionalism you display for all your subscribers and fellow music lovers

  • I love how Anthony always emphasizes on his opinion. So true, though.

  • are you and cal bro's now?

  • @farizben123 we're getting along for now, i think.

  • You should review The Chariot - "the Earth" for your next trkrvwz or perhaps the album it comes from (LONG LIVE)

  • I was about to not watch this because I don't care for the Decemberists, so a review of this album would just be pointless to me. But I did watch this, and I must say, this is your best video.

  • Great review! The ending could have been a skit on Adultswim. It had that particular humor to it.

  • Cold War Kids - Mine is Yours

  • I thought I was the only one who didn't enjoy this album, great review, as always.

  • Your crazy........thanks.

  • Cloud Nothings, broski, Cloud Nothings.

  • How about the new Cloud Nothings album?

  • EPIC

  • I think the debut Braids album - "Native Speaker", may be worthy of some of your time. Or not...:-)

  • good jorb with the whole explanation. I think a lot of people needed that.

  • Great review! Found you through JGC Sound. Glad I did. You should check out my friends band, Universal Order of Armageddon. They were around back in the early 90's, on Jade Tree records. They just got back together and are kicking some ass. Take care and looking forward to more of your reviews.

  • Yup. Best ever. Needle Drop & DJ Funktuall need to be on TV. Like a new music geek cable channel. Great stuff.

  • Best needledrop video ever? I think so

  • I agree with you on the Decemberists, I'm just not feeling it. I haven't listened to the Iron & Wine enough yet to form a fair opinion, though. I just really wanted to say that your section in between the 2 reviews where you explain the point of reviews and opinions was really amazing. I like to write my own reviews and no one really seems to care. I love to write, but no one likes to read. People like you give me hope for the world haha.

  • all your reviews should be this epic.

  • If you don't want me to slice off your fingers with hacksaw, I suggest you review the more-than-excellent new CROWBAR album.
