I actually really enjoyed this album, I was really into the songwriting and the instruments, I guess since I grew up listening to country, it's kind of engrained in my brain, always hated the songwriting of country though, it always seemed like just re-hashed things. But this obviously doesn't have that problem. Lol.
I'm not sure if you've done this yet (recent subscriber) but it's very helpful to have an installment explaining your numerical scores. You could give examples of high and low-scoring albums and explain the relation between your views of the album and the score given. The problem is that when people see "4/10" they imagine getting a 40 on a test.
I'd recommend doing away with scores altogether. You're very eloquent and you express yourself well enough without needing to quantify your tastes.
@lumburgapalooza He has a little article on his site called "why scores matter" where he explains why he refuses to stop giving scores. It's an interesting read
I really liked Iron & Wine's newest album, though quite different from his other work, it is daring and different. It's good stuff! I have to agree that The Decemberists played it a little more safe this time around, but it's a return to their roots, for sure. Thanks for the review Mr. Fantano!
See, This album for me was amazing. This album brought me back as a fan. I had somehow skipped Hazards of Love somehow. I got this after seeing a full live performance on NPR. I instantly loved the songs. I enjoy the simplicity of the songs. Which is odd for me. I loved the song for his son and just the vibe. The alt country feel. and Hazards once I listened is amazing.
I think you'll find as you get older, what you look for in "pop" music will not be so regimented. I think when I was your age, sorry, I KNOW when I was your age, my criteria were very different.
I dont always agree with this guy. hell, i dont agree with him most of the time. But every album is not going to be a ten. and he rarely bashes an album. He uses his opinion to create as subjective of a review as possible. and that, i respect
I love your videos but this Iron and Wine review was poorly argumentated, like you overlooked the music material. The tracks go from rather underwhelming (I'd give you that) to memorably emotional. Like the ultimate song, "Your Fake Is Good for Me", which never cease to amaze as it grows, and grows, and the lyrics are becoming a trippy ritournelle. This actually gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it, and it still does it.
Woops, I guess we were all idiots then like Cal Chuchesta for thinking that we could voice our opinion about an album. Sorry, that we could thought we could influnce someone else with our opinion, since your point of this video is that you can't change someone's mind. Poor Cal. Just because he wanted to talk ,you shouldn't have put him down. I somehow feel like you are saying the same things to your supportive audience that makes you 2 dollars a day.
@TROLLulzy lol. i think you missed it buddy. he is confronting the issue of people FREAKING out and getting mad at him when he gives a low score. he is just saying, "hey don't get mad at me this is just my opinion. and if you like this album AWESOME keep enjoying it." he has actually said that many many times in videos and in comment responses. :)
Thanks for being civil, I loved hearing your point of view, though I am an extremely die-hard Decemberists fan, and I am in love with the King is Dead. The Hazards of Love was ground-breakingly amazing, but I'm glad they're going back to their roots. I would have given it at least a 7. What's up with the ending???
I'm surprised you listen to country. I find it hard to get into, but I'm always trying to expand my musical tastes...any recommendations for good stuff?
not sure if you've heard of them, but the Flying Burrito Brothers was the first country band I loved. I think they're the first country band that a lot of people love. They were never so popular, but they were around back in the 60's. Make sure to get Gilded Palace of Sin. One of the main guys, Gram Parsons, was only around for that album. Chris Hillman was great too, but it was way better when both of them were together.
It's funny to watch the juveniles fall behind as the band grows. This more mature, very simple, eloquent poetry is hard for those who live in a constant need for distraction. Their most complete work to date. Major kudo's to this more elevated
Please review the new album from Gang of Four, "Content". I know you've shown your post-punk acumen with your appreciation for Wire's Pink Flag. Anyone who knows Go4 knows they are extremely inconsistent... does the new one get the seal of approval?
saw these guys open for deathcab for cutie a few years ago, i wanted to check out more of their stuff but never got to it. i think i'll pick up a few of their albums.
Anthony (and Cal): Subjective opinion--for sure. People will disagree. BUT some people ONLY listen to new music (for whatever reason) and this is tragic. I'm sure there were dozens of people that gave Pink Flag a shot because of TND, and I don't think expecting, from time to time, a review of an old favorite that has helped shape current indie rock is "missing the point of the channel." You can do what you like, you're an excellent critic, but maybe you shouldn't have teased us with Pink Flag :)
Awesome review. I am a massive Decemberists fanatic, and I loved the album, but you make compelling points. I have to agree, actually, about the solos, especially the harmonica ones. Still, some of these songs have become some of my favorites, like Rox in the Box, June Hymn, This Is Why We Fight, etc.
Thanks for the review......I just saw a huge vinyl box set of this album in the record store $199.99 . I honestly can only think of about 10 albums I'd pay 200 dollars for. Let alone this one. As always, thanks Anthony.

Anthony this is one of your best videos by far, def a fav. This one and that MF Doom review where you spit FIYAAAA LOL....Yo! review "Gutter Rainbow" Talib Kweli..I hate snow too by the way!

I was about to not watch this because I don't care for the Decemberists, so a review of this album would just be pointless to me. But I did watch this, and I must say, this is your best video.
Great review! Found you through JGC Sound. Glad I did. You should check out my friends band, Universal Order of Armageddon. They were around back in the early 90's, on Jade Tree records. They just got back together and are kicking some ass. Take care and looking forward to more of your reviews.
I agree with you on the Decemberists, I'm just not feeling it. I haven't listened to the Iron & Wine enough yet to form a fair opinion, though. I just really wanted to say that your section in between the 2 reviews where you explain the point of reviews and opinions was really amazing. I like to write my own reviews and no one really seems to care. I love to write, but no one likes to read. People like you give me hope for the world haha.
I actually really enjoyed this album, I was really into the songwriting and the instruments, I guess since I grew up listening to country, it's kind of engrained in my brain, always hated the songwriting of country though, it always seemed like just re-hashed things. But this obviously doesn't have that problem. Lol.

I was about to not watch this because I don't care for the Decemberists, so a review of this album would just be pointless to me. But I did watch this, and I must say, this is your best video.

Great review! The ending could have been a skit on Adultswim. It had that particular humor to it.

I think the debut Braids album - "Native Speaker", may be worthy of some of your time. Or not...:-)

Great review! Found you through JGC Sound. Glad I did. You should check out my friends band, Universal Order of Armageddon. They were around back in the early 90's, on Jade Tree records. They just got back together and are kicking some ass. Take care and looking forward to more of your reviews.

Yup. Best ever. Needle Drop & DJ Funktuall need to be on TV. Like a new music geek cable channel. Great stuff.

If you don't want me to slice off your fingers with hacksaw, I suggest you review the more-than-excellent new CROWBAR album.
